Unique Baby Names!

Well I let my son pick his baby sisters name:) and yes she is named after
A character from batman! Harlee-Quinn:) I also love unique names...some girl names are Amberlynn Emmaline or Melrose boys names I like Czar(king or ruler in Russian) Jaxson Or Stryker

My son's name is Banyan.....

Just keep in mind that what might seem cute for a baby or child, might not seem so cute for an adult.

Imagine your child as an adult and having to answer phones at work as an executive.

I literally took a call not long ago from a very nice woman who I had to ask to repeat her name. She said, "My name is Jellow, like mellow, but with a J".

I'm not being judgemental, but I also wonder what her mother must have been thinking.

Jellow?
Try to tell me that woman wasn't teased half to death as a kid.

There is unique and then there is just being downright mean to your child and practically painting a target on them.

Having done the birth certificates at our hospital, in my opinion, the worst thing is coming up with a name that people look at and have absolutely no way of knowing how to pronounce.

Example: Xinde

Cindy.

A simple and pretty name made unreasonably complicated for the sake of being unique.

Again, just my opinion.

I'm a teacher so I see a lot of kids and their crazy names. Don't name your child something that is a regular name just spelled wierd- The child will FOREVER be correcting people.

Just keep in mind that this name, no matter how cutesy or unique will be with that child the rest of his/her life!

When we named our daughter, we did not want any commonly used name nor did we want something so " out there" that everyone would have trouble with pronounciation and spelling.

Think of that name as a baby, toddler, school aged chik through 80+ yrs old.

If you don't know whether it's for a boy or a girl, don't use it. Don't give a normal name a crazy spelling either.

Unique can be nice, but not when your child has to spend their entire life correcting people.

Or do you want a unique old-fashioned name like:

Adelaide, Corinne, Delilah, Fiona, Greta, June, Matilda, Miranda, Maeve, Nella, Ophelia, Winifred,

Arthur, Ernest, Frederick, Henry, Lawrence, Martin, Oliver, Samuel, Timothy

How about buying a name book? That way the ones you like will stick out. I think naming a baby should be up to the couple. You could use us for ideas, but since you made the baby, don't you want to make the name as well? Own it!!! Don't just pluck a name that we give you. Therefore, I am lettting your creativity flow starting now :-)

Nothing that ends with a -Den for either boy or girl. I really don't like it when a girl is named a popular boys name like Aiden or Jayden. Nothing that sounds like Kaylee or McKayla, no matter how it's spelled. No initial names either, they sound annoying. I would look to history, fim, or literature for some inspiration. Boys names I like are Henry, Edward, Finn, Flynn, Dean, Clark and Grant. Girls names I like are Vivienne, Marilyn, Audrey, Alanna, Susanna, Victoria, Adrienne, Claudine, April, Clementine, and Winter. Boys names should sound dashing and masculine while girls names should sound elegant and intriguing. Don't pick Braxton (like Braxton-hicks). Nothing that sounds like a medical condition.

My boys names are Nixon and Kane!

How about braxten or maybe thayden for a boy. Or jasmine did a girl?

If our son had been a girl, we would have chosen Clementine for her name. Other boy's names we considered were Phinneas (nixed due to the H./Phinneaus twins of Julia Roberts.....not a park conversation I wanted to have), Theodore, and Artemis, (but no, b/c of the Artemis Fowl books).
Pop culture references are going to be picked up on by kids, as SH pointed out.

I agree with not going too far out or being too obscure. Our son was named after a nineteenth century writer and poet, and has a Spanish name. While both my husband and I were very familiar with the name (as were our friends), there are a few people who have trouble pronouncing it. Mostly older people we know, but still... it's very 'foreign' to them. I wouldn't change his name for anything-- it suits him-- but be prepared that even if it's a little atypical, you may need to be patient with people. And when I call the doctors office or have to leave a message regarding him (school, doctor), I'm sure to spell his name as well as say it.

Boys- callan, dean, dain, griffin, Harrison, kellan, Landon, Leland, Mateo, Oliver, perry, Preston, Ty.

ETA: I like Ash better than Zeke! I also like Zane too..

I'll share one that's on my list if I have another child, even though it's on my list, because no one has mentioned it. It's a boy's name, not unisex: Ianto (pronounced Yan-toh), and it's the Welsh version of John. It means "Gift of God." I really love this name, especially when it's said with a real Welsh accent!

I agree with other posters to be careful and not to make your child the joke of the village with a funny name. Choose one that is unique but elegant, so she can carry it throughout her life with no embarassement. My advice is to pick a theme and go from there. Some people chooses name of towns (Savannah etc..), countries (Jordan, India, Egypt), even continents (think of Asia). Others pick fruits (sadly, think of Apple). Some others pick colors (Hazel, Blue etc..), months of the year (April, August etc..), seasons (Autumn, Summer). Just make sure it does not make your child look uneducated and/or trashy.Personally, I love Elettra for a girl and Xavier for a boy. Congratulations and have fun!

Whatever you do, just please don't name your child after a fruit.
ie: like "Apple" Gwyneth Paltrow's daughter's name.
Nor after a Star Wars character or cartoon character.
The kid will be teased a ton. I have actually seen this.
Poor child.

Or choose a name, according to its "meaning." Not just some made up awkwardly spelled, name.
