Unhappy with Pediatrician

My 7 month old got sick for the first time last weekend, which is wonderful that he hadn't been sick before, but when we went to the Pediatrician I just got this uncomfortable feeling that this could be so much better. She has me lay him down and hold his arms down while she checks him out, which scares him now because I think he is expecting his shots. Then he started crying and it sounded like he was starting to choke on his own saliva and I tried to raise him up so he could gather himself before she finished but she held him down and did the swab in the back of his throat before letting me hold him. This made it worse and really scared him. I know I am sensitive and a first time mom but he trusts me and I got over the crying for sleep training when we did Ferber, which worked really fast, but I just don't want him to be scared like that when it is unnessesary. I almost cried when the stupid thermometer took 2 min. I swear. He was crying so hard and that was unnessesary. It made me so uncomfortable. Even the nurse said it didn't normally take that long. The experience attached him to one of his little blankets which I think is now going to be his security blanket. He hasn't cried much as a baby and only cries about 20 seconds when he gets his shots. Plus I don't think she remembers us, she says things that sound like it is the first time she has seen us and I have to keep reminding her of things (like that I was exclusively pumping and not directly breastfeeding, but have just now transferred to formula). Is this normal? Should it always be this way? She always seems like she is in a hurry and talks so loud! I go to Mercy at Kilpatrick and Meridian and would like a doctor in the Edmond/Deer Creek area. Along Memorial is fine too. I just know this experience could be much better.

What can I do next?

If you are unhappy with your pediatrician find a new one. I love taking my daughter to her Pediatrician. She has been going to him for almost 5 years. Her lets her sit in my lap or his. She rarly sits on the table. He always knows what her medical history is even when I call him after hours. His name is Dr Berry. He is part of the mercy network and his number is ###-###-####.

If you felt uncomfortable then you should change pediatricians. Mother's intuition. Some of the not knowing your file is common among drs. They try to read your chart really fast before coming in to see a patient. Some drs are better at covering that up than others, but you should never feel rushed about your appointments. I also see a group practice. It was called Edmond Physicians but I think they just became a part of Integris. We see Dr. Jeanne Schaeffer. Their number is ###-###-####. Located in Edmond off of 15th. Near Kelly. May be the same place as the previous poster about Dr. Olay.

I would not be happy with any of those things either. I LOVE taking my kids to their Ped. she is wonderful. Someone already mentioned her but I wanted to mention Dr. Key again. (at NW Pediatrics in Mercy Hospital) It is a GREAT place.. I recommened her to everyone. She knows my kids names and everything about them everytime we go in. She's amazing.

I recommend Dr K. Stephens. He is at the Mercy location at Memorial & Boulevard (around the corner from where Lion's Fun Park used to be in Edmond). It's easily accessible since you can take Kilpatrick right to Blvd and then just a mile north.

I like his CNA, Cathy Gezel, VERY well. She is really great witht the little ones. I think she sees most of the illnesses, and Dr. Stephens likes to do the wellness check ups. They are also very fast (but they don't rush you out the door either) about getting you in and out and seem to be pretty sensitive in making the experience as comfortable as possible. I have several friends that take their kids there, and my sister even switched her daughter from another pediatrician at that same office to Dr Stephens. I have heard zero complaints from everyone I know that uses him - so I highly recommend him! He does havea sort of a straight forward, good ole boy attitude - so he gets to the point which I like! They have never made me feel like I my questions are dumb, etc.

Sometimes, you are going to have a not so great experience regardless of who your Dr. is. One time, a lab nurse had a VERY difficult time finding a vein for bloodwork for allergy test. While it was heart wrenching, sometimes those things, as bad as they suck, have to be done for your babies health, ugh! I had my husband go in and I hid out in the hallway. LOL I have medical problems and also have hard to find veins, so I understood the issue, but it was still very hard to see my baby so unhappy. Regardless, this would have been an issue no matter what Dr. was seeing him, you know?

I do think all Dr's need some reminder as to what you are and are not doing. I always give them a quick synopsis just because I've had to go to so many Dr's way too many times with my own health issues. Plus, I take a list of written down questions with me so I don't forget anything I want to ask. I think Dr's tend to be somewhat overloaded in general and it doesnt hurt to recap your particular baby's situation - just my thoughts!

Here's a link to Dr Stephen's website:

OH! I almost forgot to mention - they have an after hours #. If you have a sick baby after hours and are concerned about your baby that cannot wait until the office opens back up, you can call for help! I absolutely love this service and to me, it's imperative for a new mom! It was such a relief on multiple occassions to get a live body to tell me what to do!
Good luck!

Hi A.. I go to Sabrina Olay in Edmond off of 15th between Kelly and Broadway Extension. It is Mercy Signal Ridge. I have also heard good things about a group located in one of the buildings on the Mercy campus. I think the practice is Northwest Pediatrics and there are I think 5 peds in the office. I have heard good things about all of them. Leverage, Key, etc are some of the names.

A., I do think your Dr. seems to need a lesson in bedside manners. My pedi. is awesome he let's me hold my child while he examines her. I have three kids and have been happy there. It is Dr. Krous at Village Center Pediatrics his number is ###-###-####. I used to go to the same office I think its the same one as yours and we had a female Dr. there. I had some of the same concerns. Dr. Krous is at Kelley and Coffee Creek and is easy to get in and don't have to wait long. Hope this helps.
