Understanding symptoms...again

I am needing some help figuring out what is going on with me. This is my fifth pregnancy (I lost one baby last year and have 3 other children), so you would think that I have this down to an art form by now. I am roughly 8 weeks, give or take a few since they can't quite tell how far I am at this point. I have been so nauseated this time around. I am sick all day, every day. I don't throw up, but just get that wave of sickness all the time. It was never like this with any of my others, and it has been going on for several weeks now. Also, my breasts have been incredibly sore since before I even took a pregnancy test. I've known I am pregnant for a month now, so they have been hurting for about 5 weeks. My back is constantly hurting, and I guess I'm bloated all the time because I look like I'm at least 6 months pregnant (I might add that I quit smoking, drinking pop, and eating most of the junk food I was eating before, which I thought would do me good, but it hasn't been because I look like a beached whale). It just seems like this time, all of my symptoms are more pronounced, and I have some that I've never had before. The nausea is what bothers me the most, because I can't eat more than once a day because of it. I have called my doctor (yesterday), and am still waiting for a call back. I just wanted to know if any other moms had any input on this from your own experiences. Also, what exercises were you able to do while you were pregnant that weren't harmful? I have excess fat around my torso that I really don't want sticking around during this pregnancy, and wanted to get some good ideas on how to lose it. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

It has been 10 years since I was pregnant with my son. Seems like I had forgotten a lot of what pregnancy symptoms actually are. I have a lot of the same you are talking about. Lots of nausea I have a hard time eating anything when I start eating it seems as though I just can't finish and a lot of what I eat really doesn't taste good. My OB gave me a paper that suggests trying vitamin B-6 for nausea. I haven't tried it yet as I just seen this yesterday. I would suggest to try it though.
As far as breast tenderness goes. I have also had the same I am almost 11 weeks and they are still so sore that I can hardly stand taking my bra off. All the support my bra gives seems to help with that.

B6 vitamins were the only thing that helped my nausea. I would take one if I thought I felt nausea coming on. Works like a charm!

Hi Jenn,

The thing that worked for my nausea, as strange as it sounds, was eating. Like a couple other people have said, I just forced myself to eat something small as soon as I started feeling nauseous, and it would usually keep it under control. No, I didn't go back to feeling perfect, but it was sure better than if I didn't eat. Best of luck to you!

Jenn,
I don't know if you have talked to your doctor, yet, but here's some non-professional advice. My first pregnancy was the same. Nauseated all day for most of my pregnancy and constant breast/nipple pain. I know you have had two daughters, but my doctor said that my symptoms could have been due to being pregnant with a girl. Sound silly, but she explained that every child is different and that some girls produce more hormones than others and as the baby develops, you may experience some side effects of these hormones. I ate pretty bland foods and lots of cold fruit. I also started Pilates and some Yoga. It helped with my weight and soreness and it also calmed me down a little so I wasn't just thinking about feeling sick all the time. Good Luck and hang in there!

I was extremely sick this time around. With Emme I wasn't sick, even for a day. The thing that really helped me was taking 1/2 a vitamin B6. I swear...it saved my life. Give it a try. I couldn't eat anything either without wanting to throw up. Talk to the pharmacist at whatever store so they can recommend you the right dosage.

I am in a very simular spot as you. I walk on the treadmill every day even if it is just 10 minutes and I try to eat very small amounts of food all day. my nausia is getting better now that I am trying that. Also when it is really bad I mix some aloe juice (Walmart or HYVEE Healthmart area) in some apple juice and I can then stomach some food. I have never had morning sickness before either, but i wasn't afraid to eat with my first 2 babies. this time I still have excess weight from the last one and am watching everything. Also I walk after lunch when fatigue sets in which gives me a burst of energy when i am done. Also drink Water! your musles and jionts will have pain if you don't have enough water and you are probly still getting rid of the toxins for all the things you gave up. WATER CARRIES THEM AWAY!!! the Aloe should help with that too.

I have been pregnant 7 times, 3 miscarriages. Every pregnancy was just a little harder than the last. My last pregnancy was miserable.

My doctor told me to expect things to get more painful and more difficult and he even told me not to call him telling him that I am in a lot of pain because I should just expect it. Yeah, he wasn't very nice. But he was the head of OB/GYN teaching department at Truman for many years so I trusted him.

Sometimes extra sickness can be a sign of twins. Have you had an ultrasound?

Hey Jenn~ Toxins in the home really could be making you feel that way, believe it or not! I have done so much research on this topic you would not believe what those products that you are using in your home can do to you. Many of them can cause sickness, infertility, and other diseases too. I shop from a store that has the best of science and nature alternatives for you to help you have a safer environment and make you feel better too. A good thing is the Pre-natal Vitamins too. Many people who have taken these have not been sick at all throughout the preganancy. Kudos to you on changing your diet too!!! Check out our website too at www.livetotalwellness.com/cindygeoff or feel free to email me if you have questions or would like to learn more about the store I shop from that can make you feel so much better!

hi Jenn,so sorry for your loss. i have only one child and i never had any bad symptoms but i can tell you my friends' symptoms. some of my girlfriends had really strange symptoms. they had really bad back-ache that she couldnt even sit so she had to go to see a chiropractor. i mean her back hurts constantly. another friend had really bad saliva problem. evrytime she spits, the saliva builds up again. that went on till she gave birth and she also had really bad mornig sickness, cannot eat anything. my sister's breasts were really sore for the first few months. for the exercise, i would recommend water aerobics or yoga, but you must let thr instructor know that you are pregnant so she can show you some different techniques. i have taken those classes with pregnacy ladies before. one other thing i did while i was pregnant was walking. everyday after work, i would walk around the lake, but if it is cold outside, you could walk around the mall.one of my girlfriends lost all her weight after she gave birth by breastfeedig. i mean, that baby drank breast milk only. by the end of two months, she was back in her old clothes b4 she was pregnant. i hope these work....good luck!

Hi Jenn
Every preg. is different. All those symptoms that you are having should subside some starting your 2nd tri. of the preg. I got a little bigger with each preg. Now isn't the time to lose weight, especially since you were smoking before, the baby needs all the nutrients it can get. Chose healthy foods, eat a lot of veggies and protein. You can ask the doctor about a low calorie high nutrient diet. You should never do any new exercise when you are preg. Walking is GREAT!!! You really can do a fast walk and lose weight! Take care and congrats on your 4th gift from God!! Sorry about your loss of a baby, I had 2 miscarriages and a stillborn baby girl. So I do have empathy for your loss. Keep positive and do what you can, worry about the weight after the baby is born.

Hi, My daughter is now almost 2 1/2 yrs old but I feel your pain, I had all the symptoms you described when I was pregnant with her. The only thing I found that helped me was to eat a little bit of something every 2 hrs even though I didn't want to. It made the nausea more manageable. Also, my doctor told me to take an Over-the-counter sleeping pill (very mild, can't remember what brand it was) along with a B6 vitamin at night before I went to bed and he said the combination of the two acted as an anti-nausea medicine since he couldn't prescribe me anything stronger due to being pregnant - might ask your Dr if he's ever heard of that because it might help. Mine eventually got better. Hope yours does too.

I am also pregnant with my fifth. I had these same symptoms in the beginning. I had never had any morning sickness with the others, or bloating or anything. I eventually figured out it was because this pregnancy and my last were so close together. My youngest is just 12 months and I am four months pregnant. There could also be the possibility of twins. My doctor originally thought I might be having twins because my symptoms were so severe this time. Hope this helps a little.

It sounds an awful lot like my pregnancy, but I had twins. Twins don't run in mine or my husbands family, the doc said....that it has to start somewhere. :)

Anyway, I knew that I was pregnant before I ever took the test, the reason I felt SO sick all the time and my breasts hurt so badly, was because I had DOUBLE the hormones coursing through me.

They turned out to be such a blessing. But it was VERY STRESSFUL for a while, just knowing my 1st baby - was now babies!! lol

I hope this helps. Can't wait to find out what the doc says. Good Luck

I am currently 6 months pregnant with my second child and this pregnancy has been a lot harder than my first. I was sick for the first three months all day every day. I found that emetrol works really well for nausea. It worked better than the prescription pills my doctor recommended. I am still currently having a lot of back pain but I have found that doing back stretches seems to help a lot. Also my poor husband gives me a lot of massages. My doctor said that the back pain was because my low back muscles are weak. I am too tired everyday to exercise so I don't know any good tips there. Hopefully it will get better soon, that is what everyone kept telling me and I didn't beleive them but it has gotten better. Good Luck and Congrats!

Well, I've only had one baby but this sounds very much like the symptoms I had and my midwife was able to figure out pretty quick that it was a potassium deficiency. You have to be careful when adding potassium to your diet because too much can damage your kidneys. So try that, I took one tablet every other day or so and started feeling better right away. There are some great yoga programs out there for expecting mommies, just investigate them well and never do anything that creates pronounced discomfort. Don't do any inversion excersises while you're pregnant and balancing poses are not a good idea either. If you have a place where you can walk, go do that - just keep it to a stroll or moderate pace.

I am currently pregnant with my 2nd at 14 weeks now. I was very nauseated with my first for 6 months with no vomitting. My 2nd has been horrible. My boobs and back has hurt from the beginning and my stomach has been growing so much. I was just nauseated starting at 6 weeks and it gradually got so much worst for me. I started vomitting upto 3 times a day. I have been good for a week now though *knock on wood*, and my stomach seems to not be so swollen. Every pregnancy is always different, but you never expect it to get worst before it gets better.
A lot of friends told me to try the c-band (Im not sure if that is the correct spelling), apparently you can find it at Walgreens, but it is a bracelet with a little pin in it, like acupuncture, and they say that it really helped them with nausea. I never left the house to go get anything. The only thing that helped me with the nausea and vomitting was sleeping. I could only eat fruit and salad, so it helped to eat a meat product every night for dinner also. Lion's choice was always my husbands stop for me on his way home from work. Good Luck and I hope you feel better.

Hi Jenn. Every single pregnancy is different. You won't have one the same at all. Like you I lost a baby myself. With my first pregnancy I really wasn't too nauseated by I did have swollen ankles. After Aaron was born I got pregnant again and lost the baby. When I was pregnant with Michael I was so sick that my doctor almost put me in the hospital. I never threw up, I was just so nauseated all the time. That went on for about 4-5 months. He put me on Zofran (which is used for chemotherapy patients as well as pregnancy now for nausea.) That didn't work. He put me on a medication that is used for patients with schizofrenia but it also helps with nausea. For the life of me I cannot remember what that is called. It only cost me $6.oo for 30 pills as opposed to almost #30.00 for only 9 pills of the Zofran. You would think the more expensive drug would work. It didn't. The less expensive one did. You may want to ask your OB about medications you can take. Pregnant women now are taking these kind of medications very early on in pregnancy with no side effects on the baby at all. However every doctor is different. When I was pregnant with Lindsay, I was a bit nauseated by not much. Sounds to me like you have a very strong healthy pregnancy going on. I always thought of it this way, the more symptoms you have, the sicker you are, the more your breasts hurt....all great signs and symptoms to have. I would rather be sick when I was pregnant than not be sick. If I wasn't sick then I would be very nervous. I didn't "feel" pregnant when I had my miscarriage.

As for the exercises....you should be able to do just about anything you want except lifting extremely heavy weights. When I was pregnant with Michael I exercised at Curves and those are weight resistent machines. You can swim, walk, run, bike....anything that makes you feel comfortable, just don't overdo it. Also, make sure you keep well hydrated.

Good luck and congratulations on the baby to be...

I'm not an expert on this by any stretch of the imagination. I didn't have morning sickness at all. My sister had it fairly badly, though, with each of her pregnancies. I know she had it for six months with her first and four with her second. Her body just didn't tolerate the hormones. Have you had a sonogram yet? I'm asking because your symptoms sound a lot like women I've known that have subsequently had twin babies. I hope you get a lot of great advice. Take care!

my doctor told me with my 2nd....that with each pregancy your body recognizes things earlier everytime and although being pregnant may seem like it should feel the same everytime.....it's not going to.
I don't have much advice except that when I was nauseated I drank lemonaide....and pink grapefruit juice...and ate things that were cold...like cold macaroni salad, lots of subway/goodcents, cold or frozen fruit, welches fruit pops, etc.
My sister-in-law was more nauseated than me....daily....she swore by the wrist bands that you wear when you are flying or traveling-one on each wrist.
oh......walk-walk-walk......if you have a tread mill....and of coarse with Dr. approval....i joined a place like curves. low impact...got the heart rate up a little bit....and it was a quick 30 minutes to myself everyday :) this is really good after baby too!
i also took a mommy swim class too...which also helped during and after baby too.
good luck!

After an initial miscarriage, I had my second pregnancy that resulted in my wonderful son. That pregnancy was extremely difficult and I was ill as you have been, for the first six months! This resulted in several hospitalizations for IVs and home health nurses coming by and doing IVs. Eventually I found if I sipped cool water mixed 50/50 with orange juice, I didn't feel as ill. I still had that gaggy feeling all the time, but was able to eat. Granted I could only keep down Captain Crunch cereal :-) and York Peppermint Patties, but that was something! I also found out that the prenatal vitamins with iron were a problem for me. I don't react well to iron. If you are on prenatal vitamins, you might try switching to a low or no iron version and see if that helps you too. Good luck!

I had the same trouble (nearly) as you...but I threw up all the time. And continued to do so for the entire pregnancy--even the delivery. I lost about 30 lbs instead of gaining weight. You really just need to talk to your OB before you do anything. He/she will probably tell you that you have an iron deficiency, and to take a supplement (which actually made me MORE sick, so be on the lookout for any "excess" nausea so that you can tell your OB right away).

And I probably wouldn't do anything more than light to moderate exercise. If you are feeling puny and aren't eating much, you'll need those reserves to keep you going. I would also tell the OB about your sore back...he might be able to tell you a chiropractor that can help you get re-aligned.

Good luck!!

All sounds normal to me. All my pregnancys were all that!

Breast were sore til about 3mos. They hurt to touch. I had blue veins showing all over my chest. Very sick to my stomach -even had a lot of vomiting w/the first..I lost a ton of weight b/c of it but gained it all back by month 3- The sickness will go away by 4month. Try eating small lil meals- I found my nausea subsided when i ate a lil of saltines. OH I tried the motion sickness wrist bands too & they seemed to work!!!

I "showed" more in the 3rd pregnancy then w/the first pregnancy (our stomach muscle aren't what they used to be)...!!!

If you didn't excercise much before i would not start anything but walking now...I Just walked daily for excercise & that is it.
Don't worry- good luck.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I'm no expert, but I've read that if your symptoms are more pronounced it is supposed to be a good thing in terms of a safe pregnancy. Your body is swimming with hormones that are there to protect the baby. It is a drag that it is worse than usual, though, because you have other little ones to take care of..

You might want to talk to your doctor about the weight. I was encouraged by my doctor to eat about 2,000 calories a day. I ate more, though, and gained a bunch. In your first trimester, if you lose a little bit of weight being too sick, it probably is ok as long as it isn't too much.

Good luck and hope you feel better!
