Undecided on Formula Brand

I have a 13 week old and have notice a problem with his formula. I breastfeed but also supplement at times. Maybe 2-3 bottles a day if we are out somewhere. Recently, I noticed him spitting up a lot when bottle fed. I asked his doctor and he said that most babies spit up. Me, being a first-time mom, i feel like he spits up more than the average baby. His doctor recently changed his formula to Soy and he told me to try it for a week. I am currently using Good Start and was wondering if I should switch over to a different formula like Similac or Enfamil.

What can I do next?

You've gotten good suggestions for brands, but I wanted to note that sometimes switching the type of formula you're feeding will have positive side effects as well. We switched from powder to the ready to feed liquid and it helped with the spit up a lot. Because with the powder formula, you're shaking it up right before you're putting it into their little tummies. Infusing air. With the liquid, it's ready to go and you're not adding more air. Also, try the Dr. Brown bottles.
Good luck!

When my boys were infants I bottle fed them and I used Enfamil, they rarely spit up. I have heard though that constant spitting up could be a sign of reflux. Also breast milk is a different consistancy (it's thinner) in comparison to formula and that could be why he is spitting up too. Do what your doctor suggests and if he's still doing it change brands to Enfamil or Similac, maybe see if your doctor can give you some samples apposed to buying it and you still having the problem. Good Luck! C.

We used Similac Soy and loved it. Then we found the cheaper brand Member's Mark (Sam's Club brand) Soy and loved that even better. I haven't tried Good Start or Enfamil. My daughter every time she took regular formula would grunt and groan afterward. We had a sample of Similac Soy (she was on regular Enfamil) and used it and immediately she stopped grunting and groaning. We never went back to regular. And she had no problems eating any dairy or switching to regular whole milk. I will say though, that my pediatrician told me to watch out for constipation as that happens a lot with soy formula, but we never, ever had a problem on those 2 brands. I think they are all the same really, I would compare the backs and go with the one you are comfortable with :) Good luck!

Hi,
My daughter is 2 now but she was born with, and still has a lactose intolerance allergy. I tried several difrent formulas and ended up staying with Similac Soy. I loved it and she never spit up on it. If your baby is doing well on goodstart I see no reason to change him though. I recommend soy to anyone whose baby is spitting up. Now that she is older she is still on soy milk.

I too breastfed my children. My son, for only 6 weeks because I had to return to work, but my girls for one year. There was a difference. I feel strongly that its due to the fact that formula is synthetic, man-made. Your breast milk, is the natural and the best in my opinion. My son had digestive issues when he was a baby, and I feel strongly that it was due to the fact that he was on formula. My girls did not have those problems. Just something to consider, I guess.

I was actually going to sugges Good Start, as it is much milder and easier to digest then Similac or Enfamil. I thin there is a newer brand out now that is even more like Mother's milk. How is the soy working out? I was a first time mom at 36, so I know how we seem to just overanalyze everything. My daughter was preemie and we had to mix formula with brestmilk for the first 3 months because she just wasn't gaining enough weight. We used a special preemie formula. After that, when we switched to regular Similac from the preemie version she started spitting up. But then we switched to Good Start, and I don't think she spit much at all after that. But my god friends daughter had to go to the hypo-allergenic soy formula at the same time. Babies do spit up, so don't make yourself too crazy. Try the soy and see if it imporves. If it doesn't, look for the newer version on the market and try that. Let me know how it works out for you.

Hi D.,

First let me say congratulations!! I'm a mom of 6 and with all of them I've supplemented with different formulas. I've tried them all I think and my favorite brand is Enfamil. Similac seems to smell and smell worse should they spit it up. Good Start is ok but I like Enfamil better. My last 2 were lactose intolerant and with one I fed him Lactose free Enfamil and that reduced the spitting up for him and my last one I had to use nutramigen. It's a little more expensive but it seemed easier on his system and took it much better than all other formulas. It does take about 3-5 days of them being on the formula for you to see how they're really tolerating it. My last was also a premie and only the nutramigen was easy enough on his stomach.

Hi D.

I started my 3 month old on Similac and she hated it and spit it up all the time. Then I switched to enfamil and she had super bad gas (even with the gas type) then I switched to Organic Soy and she was constipated for weeks at a time. Finally, I gave her good start and she loves it. She doesn't have any more problems. Ever baby is different, so maybe try to Good Start Soy and see how he takes it. Watch out for constipation though....If he still continues to spit up Enfamil does make a brand for babies who spit up frequently. My advice is trial and error. The only thing you can do is try different brands until you get the best one. Also, maybe try a slower nipple for the bottle. He may be taking it in too fast.

I am on wic so I can only use good starts. I want to say that the soy formula never kept my baby full and we switched back to milk based. I also had lots of coupons for formula and found that similar was my favorite. it was thicker and had lots less bubbles which can cause spit up bad. it also was granier in texture and they just changed their formula a few months ago to have less bubbles for less gas and spit up. my baby had the same problem-lots of spitting up, and a little reflux which would make her kind of choke when it came up. I think alot of babies spit up alot. when your baby goes on solids it will get better. but I think soy formula is alot thinner and comes up even more than the regular kind.

Hi!

I used Enfamil Lipil with Iron cause that is what the Hospital gave me. I was not as fortunate as you to be able to breast feed my milk never came in.
At one point Taylor when she was around the same age got constipated and was spitting up the Doctor told me to switch her to a lactose free formula so I did and she was worse so I just put her back on what she was originally taking and she was fine. It's that their stomach's are so sensative at that stage in their life that it's hard for them. I know that Doctor's are qualified to give you advice but you know your baby best and if you feel he is spitting up too much than that is probably true! Don't keep switching different kinds of formula cause then he will never get use to one certain kind. Some people do well with soy based formula's and other's do well with Lactose free ones. You do have to try it for a week or two before you can see a difference. I was lucky with Taylor if she didn't like it you knew straight off. She just got even more fussy when I tried to switch her so I knew it was not the formula but that she was just constipated and that was causing her stomach to get upset but she straightened out in a few days.

I hope this helps some good luck.

With my kids they both did best on Simulac powder not liquid.
My daughter still did alot of spit up( just not as much), I was told she had reflux and to put some rice cereal in the formula. That worked so we didn't need any prescription meds.

They make special formulas for babies who can't digest the protein's as easily - like Nutramigen or Alimentum (but they're twice as much $$). There's a formula that Enfamil makes that's called AR for babies that spit up - it's heavier with rice starch that keeps it down easier (if your baby doesn't have gas issues as it may be harder to digest??) but you can try & see. Hope this helps!! My baby has GERD (acid reflux) so trust me when I tell you I understand about excessive spit up!! Good luck.

I have a 3 month who started out very gassy and would spit up everything. I found myself burping her alot and it would take a long time for her to actually burp or she would pass gas and it was painful to her. I was using the enfamil lipil then switched to enfamil gentle ease, that was a blessing but very expensive. she smiles alot now when she burps. It no longer hurts her nor does she spit up except for small occasions and recently i found both target ands walmart carry their brand in it and it saves me $9 a can with no problems from Jenna during the switch.
