So has anyone out there experienced an umbilical hernia after having children? If so, did you get it fixed? And if you did, did you go to a general surgeon to diagnose and fix it? I am pretty sure I have one but have yet to go to the doctor because I am not sure where to start. My belly button just doesn't look right & it sticks out. And seems to have gotten worse after having my second child.

So What Happened?

Hi mom! I went to my general doctor had an abdominal ct scan and found out that I do have an umbilical hernia. A bad one at that. It will be getting it fixed at the end of June. and I do have a diastasis (separation of the muscles) however the doctor didn't say how big it is. So after surgery and my recovery I will be looking into closing my diastasis hopefully w/ the help of a trained postnatal diastasis specialist. And yes there are such people out there that can help w/ this. So thanks to all the reponses regarding my issue. :)

I have to disagree with S.H. every primary care physician or your OB/Gyn should be able to diagnose a hernia (almost any hernia for that matter, but especially an umbilical hernia, which is VERY common).

Not all hernias require surgery, some can be treated conservatively and resolve by themselves. This is more common in infants and young children though and most hernias in adults will eventually get surgically corrected. In that case your doctor will probably refer you to a surgeon.

S.H. is right, hernias can lead to serious complications, so you must get it evaluated. If it is painful or discolored see a doctor immediately (ER)!

It sounds like it could also be a diastasis, which is a split in the stomach muscles. This happens to up to 98% of women to some degree or another. I work with many women whose belly buttons are off due to diastasis recti. I am a prenatal/postnatal trainer specializing in diastasis rehab and restoring the prepregnancy midsection.

Most women have a split in their abdominal muscles postpartum, called a diastasis recti. This creates the not-quite-right asthetics of the “mummy tummy” – but even more it creates back problems, and can cause a hernia if not treated. Cosmetically women will notice they can exercise and exercise and it won’t go away. That is because they are not doing specific exercises to bring the recti muscles together.

It is helpful to use an abdmoninal splint to approximate the recti during the day, at night and while working out to help bring the stomach muscles together. When the stomach muscles come together, it can eliminate smaller hernias if a woman has then, because the linea alba - the connective tissue between the stomach muscles - comes back to it strong tight condition, rather than being stretched out like saran wrap over the organs. When that connective tissue get a little hole or tear, THAT would be the hernia. So its a win-win bring the stomach muscles together and restore the condition of your muscles, because it eliminates so many problems WITHOUT surgery.

In fact, I just posted a couple days ago about belly buttons on my blog:
www.beautifualafterthebelly.blogspot.com

I work privately with people in 3 sessions to train them to do the specific exercises that bring the stomach muscles together, and then also encorporate those into a full body workout. My women have had great results.

You can also get Julie Tupler’s book, “Lose your Mummy Tummy” and go to her website:

www.diastasisrehab.com

to learn more about the technique. I am the only one certified in the state – please let me know if you have any questions!

Good luck,
B. Wayne

**Adding This:
With our Pediatrician... he examined my Daughter.... he then referred us to a Pediatric specialist/Surgeon to CONFIRM his suspicion... of it being a Hernia. There are MANY different kinds of hernias.... and with our Doctor... this is his protocol and sequence of events that WE went through. We consulted with the Specialist/Surgeon to get more SPECIFIC and informed assessments of my Daughter's condition... and its ramifications, and outcomes including percentages of recurrence/possibility of strangulation/recovery/possibility of occurring on the other side of her body... which is COMMON in her type of Hernia etc. MANY details and only the Specialist/Surgeon would have the definitive information and prognosis for my daughter's hernia. THUS, that is why I said... ONLY a Specialist... should be ultimately consulted with... for a Hernia... because each case is different. AND, if a Hernia strangulates... (and you cannot predict that), you can die. It is an emergency situation then.
A "Hernia" is not something that sticks out... so you just stick it back in. A Hernia is a hole... in the abdominal wall... and then the internal organs falls out of, or sticks out of that hole. According to our Specialist... the things that typically is sticking out of that hole... is the intestines... or in my daughter's case it can even be the OVARY. And... if the hole becomes bigger (which it can) or if the hole suddenly closes up or something is still sticking out of it and the hole "resolves itself" (which means the hole closes), THEN whatever is sticking out of that hole will "strangulate" which means basically that circulation is being cut off to that organ... and gangrene can set in and infection and losing that part of the organ.
This is information... which I learned first hand... from our Pediatric Surgeon/Hernia Specialist who treated my daughter.
----------------------------------------------------

You need to see a specialist/Surgeon for a diagnosis. Not a GP. Go to your Doctor.. but if it is a hernia, or something else, he/she needs to refer you to a specialist.

Hernias.... can cause complications... or get "strangulated."

My daughter had an "inguinal hernia"...and she had to have surgery.

there are many different kinds of Hernias. So it is best to have it properly diagnosed.

all the best,
Susan

Hi J.
I had an Umbilical hernia. I started feeling sharp pain around my bbutton about 10 months after I had my son ,he was almost 10 pounds. I had teh surgery and my doctor even managed to fix my bbutton while fixing the hernia as well. I was in bed for like a week and just took it easy for 4 weeks, NO LIFTING. It's had to be aken care of by surgery or something can get trapped here and cause an infection.
Hope this helps!

I had umbilical hernia repair surgery 5 years ago but it was in my abdomenal area. A reconstructive surgeon diagnosed me after 2 years of asking my general practitioners what it could be. She and a general surgeon did the 4 hour surgery together. He repaired the damage to my abdominal wall and putting stuff back where it was supposed to be and she repaired the damage that had been done to my abdominal muscles. Why dont you ask for a referal to general surgery?

I had this as well. I went to my OBGYN & she sent me to an Internist (check with your insurance to make sure they are on their provider list). He confirmed the diagnosis & a week later I had the surgery. It was an out patient procedure & the recovery is not that bad. You just can't lift heavy objects for about 6 weeks.

Yes I got an umbilical hernia when I was pregnant with my thirs son, who is now 19 years old. I was about 6 months pregnant and did not know what the pain was from. I went to my doctor and he pushed it back in. It only came out one other time since then and I managed to get it back in.I also had another child and it never came out. I am very careful not to overexert myself especially when lifting and/or carry things. I still do exercises and abdominal ones also. I think I am too old to wear a bikini now (I am almost 50) and I probably wont get it repaired unless it becomes a problem. I dont' believe in elective surgeries. It only has come out twice in 19 years and 2 pregnancies. I think the doctor said it's about the size of a silver dollar. My belly button does protrude some, but like I said there are no bikinis in my future! I do keep my weight around 125-130 pounds for my 5"7" frame and I exercise daily doing both aerobics and strength training with weights.I guess I have leanred to live with it rather than get surgery. Hope this helps.
