Trying to Get Rid of Ringworm

I'm looking for any suggestions on clearing up a case of ringworm. My son has ring worm in his head. I noticed it a week or so after he got a haircut a while back. I believe maybe the barber didn't clean the clippers before cutting his hair. I know it's quite common for children to get ringworm and it's not hard to cure. I've treated it before but never was it on the scalp. It does not bother him he has no complaints but it is a fungus and should not be there. I thought I got rid of it but it came back. I keep him clean his clothes, bedding, toys, ect. I'm using a cream perscribed by a doctor and cortizone but it's not clearing up fast enough for me even though I read that when on the scalp it takes longer to cure. Has anyone else had this problem and is there anything else I can do?

What can I do next?

Ringworm can take FOREVER to go away. It also is easily spread. You can spread it to pets as well as other humans. If the ring is looking less red and more pink it should be going away. Have you tried calling the Dr back? There is a shampoo that can be used as well. I think it is called Nizrol?

Good luck!

Oh no! I sympathize with you! At least it doesn't itch! My roommate and I got it(from her darn cat!) and it was really annoying. We tried the cream, and she got put on a pill. We washed EVERYTHING! We even bleached down our walls. I suggest just trying to clean everything while trying to treat it.

Good luck! I hope it goes away!

My son had it on the back of his leg after football season last year. We used jock ich med, Lotrimin Ultra , the cream not the spray about $10.00 . From my understanding ringworm is a form of fungi very similar to jock ich. I used it 2 times a day morning and night, it cleared up in about 2 weeks, I used it for one more week after i could not see it anymopre. Has not come back. Good Luck I hope it helped.

Hi D.,

Have you tried a cream called Lotrimin?? It is supposed to be very good for that. You can get it over the counter in the pharmacy.

I also heard that you can pour two drops of tea tree oil in six ounces of water and rub it with a cotton ball in the ringworm twice a day. It should take care of the fungus in two weeks or so. (don't let this remedy get in his eyes thought. :-)

Good luck!

I got ringworm when I was nursing and since I couldn't use anything strong. They had me use Monistat (yep that stuff) and hydrocortizone. I'd put the yeast cream on the the am. The cortizone later, and the same thing again in the pm. It cleared up in about 7 days.

Hi D.
My kids got ringworm pretty regularly at a home daycare we were at once (no longer!). Anyway - my kids got ringworm so bad that they had to be on oral meds for 6-8 weeks. If it gets in the hair - they can lose their hair, so I'd get it checked right away. If they lose their hair, it can take weeks to grow back, and they may lose it in patches.

BTW - the meds are terrible tasting - so get them flavored at the pharmacy - we did, and my kids who normally LOVE to take meds (I know - they are weird!) HATED to take this stuff (Griseofulvin if I remember correctly)....but after months of trying cream to get rid of ringworm, just to have it come back - all 3 of my kids were put on the oral medicine. What a pain!

Good luck!

Usually prescribed meds help that best. Do you have any pets it is common to get this from pets.

Ringworm on the head is more serious than on the body, because it could cause your son to permanently lose a patch of hair and other issues. I would definitely contact your Pediatrician because he probably needs oral meds ASAP.

We're going through it right now. Topical cream called Econizole once a day for 2-3 weeks on non-hair covered areas, although the ring goes away pretty quickly. Then twice a day a dose of Griseofulvin for 6 weeks for hair covered areas. Our daughter takes the oral meds just fine so she must be okay with the taste. It is spread by scratching the area and then touching another area. You have to be gentle with hairwashing so you don't scratch it. The Griseofulvin can cause sleep disturbances - worse than any ringworm - so it's best to take it with a high fat meal for better absorption.

Dear D. G

My son got ringworm on his head last August, he lost all his hair in that area also, and in the last 2 weeks the hair is growing back. If your doctor says to use an ointment, go to another doctor! You do not us topicals on ringworm if it's on the head. We found that out the hard way. We ended up at the ER after using a topical ointment because the ringworm got worse. You need to get an oral med to cure it and it could take 6 to a year to heal. The hair will grow back also, after the ring goes away. No perminate balding will happen, it will grow back.

Good luck and God's Blessings

The only thing I can tell you from past experience is you either need to keep it covered or go to the doctor. There is an ointment that is perscription formula to get rid of this.
I had ringworm from working in a daycare from one of the children having it in their hair and just rubbing up on me I got it. I ended up going to a Dermatologist(didn't know what I had at that time) they scrapped the area and thats how I found out that it was ringworm. They gave me ointment and within a few days it had cleared. Hope this helps.

My DD got it when we lived in Florida and it took about 6 weeks of perscription cream to get rid of it. The dr. told us to use for a week after we could no longer see it, just to make sure it was totally gone other wise it could come back.
