Hi ladies! I'm a mommy to a 3 yr old and were ttc for one month now. I get my period seriously about 3-4 times a yr :(. Last night around 3 am I woke up to ovarian cyst bursting worst pain in the world. (Dr apt next week). I'm just concerned it took us awhile to have our first and wondering if cysts can make me infertile ? I have the biggest desire to be pregnant now. Any tips? Or anyone share the same issues? Also I'm trying to stop smoking before I get preg Any tips on that? It's very hard :( (I do not smoke while preg or near my son ). I'm just so worried my irregular per and cysts will have me infertile:( thnx ladies look forward to being a member of this site!!

What can I do next?

I get them, pain is practically unbearable. But my periods are pretty regular. I've had 3 healthy babies. It did take awhile to conceive my 1st, but not the others. As far as smoking, I don't have any good advice, as I've never been a smoker. Maybe the patch? You should really quit before you try to conceive though. Just my opinion. Welcome to mamapedia!

Well first, relax. You have only been trying for one month. It rarely happens the first time.

I have dealt with ovarian cysts for years. First, I have always been told that if I suspect a ruptured cyst, the it would require immediate attention, because of the possibility of it causing internal bleeding. There is also the issue that a ruptured cyst can apparently cause twisting of the ovaries. My doctor says these are rare issues, but things that need to be addressed. If it were me, I would be calling to move that appointment up...it's an emergency, they should find a way to fit you in.

I have very irregular periods as well. My doctor ran some pretty simple tests to determine why I was not ovulating. In my case, I have slightly elevated blood sugar. This can cause some women not to ovulate. I was put on meds to lower my blood sugar and got pregnant within two weeks, after two years of trying. With my second pregnancy we just got lucky and timed things right after getting off the pill. A friend of mine discovered that she had thyroid issues and that was affecting her cycle. My sister has irregular periods because of PCOS. You need to talk to your doctor, there could be a myriad of things going on.

I did have to be monitored during my second pregnancy because of a cyst. I was having some discomfort. Come to find out, I had a soft ball sized cyst. I was given several sonograms to make sure it was not increasing in size. It went away on it's own.

Simply having cysts will not make you infertile. And an irregular period adds complications, but does not negate your ability to get pregnant.

You need to have a serious talk with your OB and make a plan with your doctor. That doctor may also be able to give advice on the smoking.

You definitely need to ask your doctor about the cyst. I'm sorry, I don't know about that.

I do know about health effects of smoking - it happens to be in my field. Smoking does decrease fertility for both you and your husband (if you smoke, you're less fertile; if he smokes, he's less fertile; if you both smoke, your less fertile times 2 so if you are having trouble conceiving, you both may need to quit in order to become pregnant). There are a lot of smoking cessation aids out there, and the success rates of quitting are much higher if you use an aid. Please talk to your doctor about the best option for you. Something prescription might actually be the best choice, but you need to talk to a doc to find out.

Maybe you have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)...When my sister was in college, she had an ovarian cyst that burst. She initially thought it was an appendicitis, but after tests, doctors found that she had PCOS and that one of the cysts burst. I know several people with this condition, and they have told me that it reduces the number of times they get their periods. Most of them are on birth control pills to make them more regular. They also told me that their doctors told them it can affect fertility. If you want to get pregnant, you should seek medical advice ASAP to find out if you have a medical condition and if so, how it can affect your fertility.

You believe you had an ovarian cyst burst and you're not already at your doctor's office getting treated? That's an emergency because it's so serious, as are complications that can occur. Getting pregnant should be secondary to that right now. Get to your doctor today if you didn't go yesterday.

While you're there get your hands on all literature about smoking cessation and talk to your doctor about help quitting. But deal with the immediacy of the emergency first.

Get your thyroid checked. Cysts can be one side effect of hypothyroidism, as can difficulty getting pregnant. I miscarried three timesand had numerous cysts before being diagnosed. I feel amazing now. Your TSH should be under 3, ideally around 2. There is some controversy around those numbers, and some doctors still think at TSH under 5 is perfectly fine. Be sure you find a doctor who agrees with the more recent figures.
As for stopping smoking, which I stupidly took up again in my 30s for a year or so: the clue for me was realizing that I was only doing it to recapture that cool feeling of doing something forbidden I had as a teen. As soon as I figured out my mental motivation, I was able to stop the next day cold turkey and haven't looked back since. Now I run every day and feel great.

Smoking is actually one of the things they know contributes to ovarian cysts. There is tons of info out there. Just google smoking and ovarian cysts. Smoking doesn't help your fertility as others have said. But you know it's not good for you, so no need to harp on and on about that.
Functional cysts do not make you infertile. But you should express your concerns with your doctor, and also talk to him or her about a smoking cessation program.
Just remember that it takes, on average, 6 mos to conceive. Best of luck to you!

I know that ovarian cysts can make it more difficult to conceive, but I don't know how much it does. I know that I had a hard time conceiving, but we did.

I would ask your doctor if you want real answers with medical knowledge behind it. As for stopping smoking, my family, Mom, Brother and Sis-in-law, all used Chantix and they have been smoke free for over 4 years now. It is prescription only, but it works better than anything else I've seen them try.

Good luck and I hope you get pregnant really soon!
