Tree Costume

I need to make a tree costume for school play. It should be a non-scary tree with apples that hang from branches. I know how to make a trunk but I'm not sure how to make the top part of the tree and branches. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Another option is a variation of fairy wings.

You use hangers and bend them teardrop shaped (probably 6 or 7)... to create kind of a peacock tail but worn/attached on a shoulder harness. The harness you can make, or you can snag a pair of fairy wings and cannibalize it.

Cover each teardrop with nylons.... spraypaint green (A couple colors of green would work best)... do big glue circles for apples, and red glitter on the glue. A couple of lightweight plastic apples can also be hung. For stage stuff... adding glitter usually helps out a lot.

Arms work best as branches

Facepaint on one cheek for an apple.

Leaf wreath for the head

My son was once a snake tree in a school play. He wore brown pants and aI think a green shirt. I cut out leaf shapes from fabric using pinking shears (or you could use felt, since it doesn't ravel) and pinned some to the shirt. I used a baseball cap as the base for a headress. I fit a column of poster board onto the cap and covered all that with the leg from a pair of green sweat pants.. Then for the snake "branches" I sewed tubes of fabric which I stuffed lightly with polyfill and then inserted craft wire so I could bend them to different shapes. I attached the branches to the covered column, then attached the fabric leaves to the branches. I think I sewed some and just safety-pinned some others. To stabilize the headress, I think I added a chin strap. I made a few more branch tubes to attach to his arms. It actually worked well. I even wore it once to a Halloween party (fetching, I'm sure). Good luck with your project!

For more natural looking branches, tightly twisting newspaper and spray painting them brown works well. Or, use brown grocery bags or brown butcher paper and you wouldn't have to spray paint. Don't know your plans for the trunk so hard to know how to attach the branches. For the leaves, how about wadding up large pieces of green netting, hot glue them in strategic places to the branches, and then just place a few leaf and apple shapes made out of paper, felt, etc. on the netting. Then you wouldn't have to make so many individual leaves. Would love to hear how you decide to do it. Good luck!

Hi Michele, They never make costumes easy! Not knowing how you will make the trunk makes it a little harder to answer. My suggestion is to use long wooden dowels wrapped in greenery to support the apples and use hot glue or duct tape to secure them. You may laugh at the duct tape suggestion, but it is very strong and works! Just not very pretty. Hopefully this child won't have to move very much, if at all. Hoipe this helps. Patti B

Pieces of felt for leaves came to mind as leaves. That's all I've got.

I recently made a spider costume using tights attached to a bodysuit for the legs of the spider. Theoretically you could do the same for tree branches with brown tights. I tried to attach a picture to this message of the spider costume but can't do it. If you e-mail me direct I can email you the picture of the spider costume so you will understand what I am talking about.

Another option is to get some green chiffon scarves at the dollar store or some similar fabric scraps, cut them into vaguely leaf-like strips, and attach them to the sleeves and hat.

Maybe embellish a "court jester" type hat you can buy at any party supply store....might be easy to attach fabric to it? Maybe a couple green boas cut into 2-3 sections with some fabric cutout apples attached. That would be cute!

You could draw and then color the tree on heavy cardboard or poster board. You could cut around the branches and leaves so that there are open spaces. Then either color apples on the board too or cut apples out of colored paper or shape some from tissue paper with paper leaves to hang from the brances that are left open by cutting around them..

Have the student hang onto the board or tie it around their waist. You could attach a fabric belt to the middle of the back of the tree to do this.
