Travel Bed Suggestions for 17 Month Old with Reflux

My son is 17 months old and cannot sleep on a flat surface such as a pack n'play due to his problems with reflux. For safety reasons I do not want to put anything inside the pack n'play to raise the head up. He is just about to outgrow his portable rocker/recliner. Any suggestions for a travel bed where the head is raised would be greatly appreciated. We were able to put his crib on an incline by adjusting the bolts and dropping the side where his feet are to a lower track.

What can I do next?

My daughter had reflux as well, and she slept on a wedge for quite a while. It was a foam wedge that had a Tucker sling over the fat end to keep her from sliding down. It was, conveniently, just the right size to fit into the pack-and-play, so we could take it with us when we traveled. They're available from the Tucker sling website (http://www.tuckersling.com/) but they are a bit spendy. I've also seen a lot of them on eBay, or you might try Craigslist. Another option is to prop up the pack-and-play mattress at one end by putting pillows or books beneath it. Good luck!

My son had the exact same problem, but he grew out of it at 8 or 9 months. We put rolled up towels or blankets under everything, so everything(crib, changing table) was at an incline. I put something under the pack and play mat and then put a blanket on top that was tucked underneath. I don't know if this is helpful or not, but its a suggestion!

We have used a wedge that goes under the sheet with our son who has reflux. It has worked well. I ordered it from babies-r-us.

Fisher Price makes an Infant to Toddler Rocker. I purchased them for my triplets at Babies R Us. They're not as cushy as the bouncy's but all three have been able to take naps and even sleep in them when needed. They're very portable and we've taken them on trips. And the best part, they hold up to 40lbs. If you do a search of it, I'm sure you'll find it on the internet as well.

I am not sure what type of pack and play you have but I have a sport one where the bottom touches the floor--could you put a pillow/blanket on the floor underneath it--or put a pillow under the feet on one side to raise it up??

N., Iam with the other moms. I cant think of anything. Because of your sons age, the only thing I can think of is maybe sticking pillows under the mattress of the pack-n-play. My boys are older so I know the mattress was very thin. So if its saftey you are worried about then stick several pillows all around under there so he cant roll and get his head stuck in between the mattress and the side so it is all even. If you are staying at a hotel ask for extra pillows just explain to them what you need them for and they will help you out. Good LUck

My oldest didn't have reflux but he did suffer from a severe case of colic (1mon old to almost a year). We found a wedge at Babies r Us that I attached to the back of the pack & play pad with velcro. It worked great. It helped him sleep much better when he was away from home. So much so that because I was still working, I took it to daycare for him. Good Luck!

my daughter is almost 3 and still requires her head elevated. When she was little and we traveled we still used a pack n play but you put books (metro phone books work great!) under the head end legs.

I could not change the hight of my son's crib so I put two hardback books under the head of his crib. This can also be done with the pack and play if you can't find anything else to work.

DO NOT USE ANYTHING OTHER THAN CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION (CPSC) AND JUVENILE PRODUCT MANUFACTURER ASSOCIATION (JPMA) TESTED DEVICE TO ELEVATE YOUR INFANT! The chances of suffocation, improper positioning and other related injuries are caused mainly by incorrect sleeping conditions. JPMA is dedicated to sleep safety so PLEASE consult their information b/f taking action. A popular recent product, the Nap Nanny was just recalled due to parental misuse that resulted in the death of an infant...the misuse was that it was placed in a bassinette to use as a wedge.

my older daughter had this problem and our ped told me to put some folded towels under the mattress of her crib, or under the mat in the pack n play. we used the pack n play from the resort we went to last year and just asked for extra towels, so you dont have to pack anything extra. especially with the price of adding checked baggage on flights nowadays. good luck and i hope it works

We use the aerobed for kids with my daughter since she was about 18 months. We put a standard pillow on it and have her put her head and shoulders on it. Her head is raised up quite a bit then. She never did have any acid reflux issues, but It would probably work with with your son.

My son sleeps with a pillow and has been since he was 1 year old. This props him up. You could also prop the mattress up with the pillow if you are concerned about your son having a pillow. If you are staying in a hotel check to see if they have a pack 'n play you can borrow so you don't have to bring your's with.

Hi!
How active is he at night? You could try raising the "ground" underneath one side of the pack and play to make it incline--like with wood or heavy sturdy books. We did it with phone books and a small bassinet type pack and play when my daughter was a tiny infant--don't know if he would move it around too much since he's so much bigger. Or what about a pilow underneath the mattress of the pack and play. Don't know if that would work and be comfortable enough, but it is a suggestion. Good Luck--we know all about reflux!!!

Not sure which pack n play you have but I know the one I used to have had a pad that went into the bottom of it, would it be possible to put foam or something under the one side of that pad?

Just a thought, good luck.

We bought a special mattress wedge that you put under the sheet. It has a gradual slope that keeps the head above the stomach. I used it in our crib as well. It feels the same as the mattress (it's not soft like a pillow) so you don't have to worry about suffocation. It is the same width as the baby mattress & pack n'play so the baby can't roll off & get stuck between the sides. I think you can find them at baby's R Us.

There is something called a Tucker Sling if I recall correctly. My son too had reflux but seemed to outgrow it around your son's age. Zantac worked well. You may just want to stuff a pillow under the pack and play mattress on one end but I always found that my son would slide down. Zantac is really mild and did wonders for my son. It didn't take away the reflux completely but he finally got some sleep.

I really liked the response of putting something under the legs of the playpen! Awesome idea!!!

You could one of those lap tables (pillow on the bottom, flat surface on top) under the "mattress" of the playpen. You might also have to come up with some bumper system (those rolled pillow, the ones that are shaped like a cylinder, not sure of the proper name) to keep him in place. I know when we had to elevated my daughter for breathing problems, she would always end up at the non-elevated end of the bed. I know you mentioned that you don't want to add anything to his crib, but by 17 mos the risk of SIDS is dramatically decreased and if he is able to lie on his stomach and roll himself to his back that also makes it less likely for SIDS to occur (according to all the doctors my oldest daughter has---she has cp).

I hope this helps and that you find a comfortable, safe solution for your son. I know it isn't easy!!
