The hubs and I are considering getting the kids a trampoline for Christmas. Wondering where to purchase one. Pros & cons of having one.....several of our friends have them & the kids just love playing on them. I will for sure get one with a safety net around it but other than that, what other safety features do I need to consider.

What can I do next?

We brought ours at a local walmart. Usually you can go on their website: www.walmart.com

We got a 12' that came with a net. My kids love it. We had it since the beginning of 2009 and now it finally gave out. The net torn, and some of the trampoline pieces is giving out. We planned on buying another one later. My kids love playing with balls in it. None of my kids didn't get hurt, except maybe hitting into each other. My husband never had a trampoline when he grew up so he got a kick out of it. :) Overall we watch our kids closer to make sure that nothing happeneds.

Take a look at the American Academy of Pediatrics or Mayo Clinic websites. Both strongly advocate against trampolines (for kids and adults) in anything but a professionally supervised gymnastics or diving program. Also check with your homeowner's company - they may cancel you.

I forget where we got ours. It came with a net around the sides, which I do recommend, and padding (that has since broken off and should really be replaced). The kids enjoy it and now my DD gets out there and mostly just steps really big. You need, however, some groundrules and if kids can't abide by them (like no more than 2 bouncers at a time) then everybody gets off. We have not had a problem with the insurance or the neighbors but we also have a backyard fence.

my doctors 2nd question at every physical, right after "do you have smoke detectors?" is "you dont ever go on a trampoline, do you?" im so sorry, i know the kids love them, but if you look up incidence of death and severe injury, you will never let your kids in them.

I grew up on a trampoline and loved it.

We had one for daughter for years and everyone loved it.

Most every home in our neighborhood has one.

Are they dangerous? yes, but so is riding a bike, running, playing with friends, etc. GEES

Just state your house rules and if someone does not follow, make them leave the trampoline.

We got ours at Academy sports, trampoline with safety net and all under $350.

They are the most dangerous thing parents buy for their kids, over 100,000 kids get hurt each year on trampolines. Please consider something else. The netting is one of the hazards too. They get broken fingers, broken teeth, scars, scraps, etc...when they get caught up in the netting. The American Pediatrics Association is fighting to get them banned from private home use because they are so dangerous.

One story that breaks my heart each time I think about it is where the young man died right there on the trampoline. His mother was standing right there and he was just bouncing. He hit wrong and she heard his neck snap. She will hear that sound the rest of her life. He was not roughhousing, he was not doing wild tricks, he was just bouncing. If he can die so can any other child that gets on one, they are too dangerous, please consider something else.

If you must get one then before you do check with your home owners policy and your health insurance, they may be banned there too. Since so many children and are seriously hurt many insurance agencies are refusing to cover the injuries, home owners insurance is also refusing due to the possibility of someone getting in your back yard and getting killed on it, even if you are not at home.

I bought mine at Costco or maybe Sams ten years ago. After six years the net that surrounds it fell apart but like a bad mom I never took down the trampoline. Now that they are older they mostly lay on it in the summer.

Check with your homeowners insurance carrier. Some have rules about having them fenced in, etc. It varies by company, but better to know before you buy and install the trampoline.

We purchased one with the net.. We followed all of the instructions.. ALL of the time..

Your homeowners insurance company will need to know about this.. So call them and see what they say. before you purchase one. We had to have a "self locking gate" so my husband installed a self locking latch to our existing gate.

Our friends have a trampoline and we love it, but so does everyone else in the neighborhood. I will just throw that out there...I'm not suggesting you shouldn't buy one for that reason, but at least know what you're getting yourself into! She will have kids come at all hours of the day and night asking to jump on her trampoline. During the summer is the worst, during the school year it's not so bad, but it is a neighborhood hot spot that she wishes her kids had to themselves sometimes!

I'm an insurance agent in AZ. Others have mentioned to check with your insurance company to see if they allow them or if they will cancel your policy. Good luck.

We had a big trampoline with the netting all around. My kids LOVED it. We also had some kind of squishy plastic that went all over the springs. They bounced on that thing for two years and we only had a couple of knocked noggins.
However....when we moved we gave it to our friend who has a 9 year old daughter and within two days she broke her ankle jumping on it.
Personally...a broken arm heals. I would get the trampoline.

Some insurance companies won't give a policy if you have a trampoline, so check on that also.

We have one. My kids are older, 10-16. THey love it.
We got it at Walmart last year the day after Thanksgiving for $100ish. It is the $250 one with the net, 14 ft.
We were there at midnite, when the sale started, and by 12:30 all 10 or so of them were sold.
Just make sure you have rules that are followed.
We don't have our net up, but the kids sit on it now to do their homework and read.
