Has anyone ever had a toenail fungus treated and was able to get completely rid of the thick hard brown toenail damaged by the fungus go back to its original state? I'm not sure how I got the fungus, but I suspect from years ago when I first starting getting pedicures. I'm wondering will I have to go to a doctor for a prescription or is there something over the counter that one can use to get completely rid of it? Please help! I would love to get a french pedicure, but that toenail on my big toe is not having it!

What can I do next?

There is a nail fungus treatment that you can buy over the counter at CVS or Walgreens or Sally's nail supply. It comes in a small brown glass bottle with a yellow lable... sorry I don't know the name of it. It works fantastic! I know you can also get an oral medication to help with it. Good luck!

The easiest course is an RX from the doc. I didn't have insurance so I google & soaked my toe twice a day (kind of a pain) in Listerine & Vinegar (I think). Also I found a polish at Ulta that was around $5 that you put on a couple times a day. After a month of soaking (twice a day UUHHGG)and clipping off my nail as it grew, it got better.
Best of luck to you. Stay out of nail salons.

I had one years ago after hiking in the mountains for several weeks. i had to go to a podiatrist (sp?) and take oral medication. have not had any problems since and this was over 10 years ago. i would go to a podiatrist as you can lose your toe nails if you don't do anything.

There is a prescription drug you can take - but I prefer to stay away from those as much as possible. Plus - it can take up to 6 months to start seeing improvement.

What I suggest is tea tree oil. You rub it all around the nail, on the nail, under the nail 2-3 times per day. This option, too, takes about 6 months, but it is better than synthetic drugs in your body!

I had fungus on my toenails for years... I had tried all the overcounter treatments, even all the use tea tree oil, vic vapor rub etc..... nothing worked... I did go to the doctor earlier this year and got lamisil..... my toes are perfect now..... you have to take it for 3 months and it takes time after that for you see complete results.... I am now no longer embarassed to wear sandles. Lamisil is not good for your liver, the doctor will check your liver before and again a month after you start and again at the 3 month when your done taking them... so you'll have to decide if it's worth the risk.

Hello,

You need to go to a dermatologist to have a sample of your nail tested to see if it is fungus. I had to have this done and it turned out it was not fungus. They need to be sure it is since the medication is fairly strong and you have to take it over a period of time. Make sure you understand the risks and side effects of the medication. Hope that helps.

My daughter had a fungus under her fingernails from wearing false nails all the time. She tried just about everything and finally cured it with the most unexpected treatment. Every night she made a paste of cornmeal and massaged it around her nails. Then still covered in paste, she put plastic bags on her hands. I don't remember how long it took, but it was a while. Yeah, it really worked.

Hi S.,
I had one pedicure about 7 years ago and got toe fungus on my right big toe. Half of it looks terrible. I tried everything to get rid of it and nothing worked. I even saw my doctor and took Lamisil for a year and it still didn't go away. He took me off of it because Lamisil is hard on your liver.

Try putting some Vick's vapor rub on it and wear a sock over it at night. It will look a little better, but not much.

Good luck,
C.

I worked for a podiatrist, Dr Churchwell, for almost 6 years and I learned a lot of things and one thing is toe nail fungus cannot be treated over the counter. Fungus grows deep into the nail bed and infects the new nail as it grows so the treatment must start there. The medication that is used to treat it is Lamisil. For 90 days you take a pill but you must have liver function tests done monthly to make sure you have no liver issues before and during the time you are taking the medication There are things that you paint on your nails but they do not work as well. I recommend seeing a podiatrist and getting a nail biopsy, they just snip your nail and send it to the lab to make sure it truly is fungus and not a bateria then ask for lamisil! Good luck either way, because toe nail fungus is tough to fight!!

S., my husband has had a toe fungus for about three months that he got from a pair of new golf shoes. He couldn't get rid of it and went to the dr. that prescribed an antibiotic that looks like toe nail polish. It is beginning to go away and return to it's normal color, but it's taking a very long time.

S.,
My sister took the oral Rx stuff and got rid of it. I have health issues and didn't feel okay with the liver danger, so I used the Rx nail stuff called Penlac, but it took about a year and a half to clear up (I thought it was done at about 7 mos and quit applying it and it came back). I finally got rid of it by doing a combo of the Penlac routine, and soaking it in water with Listerine in it and applying Tea Tree Oil afterward. It hasn't come back and it's been nearly two years. (I got so that I really liked the smell of Tea Tree Oil!)

Summary: the fastest and most sure method is prescription Lamisel which you take orally. Penlac is also priscription only and is painted on the toe and toenail after you clip as much of the damaged toenail off that you can. Eventually, you want to try to remove all the damaged toenail - even if it means that you are removing it off the top of the toe. It will grow back nice and healthy once you get rid of the damaged area.

I have heard some people say that they were able to get rid of the fungus without resorting to the prescription stuff, just using Listerine. That wasn't my experience.

It might also help your body fight off the fungus if you take odorless garlic tablets during the treatment process. Garlic has natural antibacterial antifungal properties.(Odorless so you won't experience "garlic" burps)

good luck.
