More then likely you are dealing with this crazy weather...cold/warm/cold. The easiest way to take care of it is to use a Q tip, cover it with an antibiotic, and rub it in her nose as deep as it is comfortable. Coat the inside of the nose.

One thing to keep in mind though, if there is no rhyme or reason to the nosebleeds and they continue, is they are also a symptom of Leukemia. Sorry to mention it or bring it up, but if she gets huge nosebleeds with heavy bleeding that are hard to stop, you need to take her to the doctor.

We solved the problem with a Vick's cool mist vaporizer. Walmart has them. We use it every night.
Good luck!

I agree with all the other comments regarding using a humidifier. You might also try saline nose spray periodically just to provide extra moisture.

I have 3 children who have had nose bleeds off and on. Two of my children had them frequently. They are no big deal in my house any more. Outside of taking them to the doctor to make sure that it is just the weather/dryness and nothing with their health, I have one other suggestion. This sounds very gross and goes against what most people will tell you. If you can get them to blow their nose until a mucusy blood clot will come out, then you can pinch it for a few seconds or use a wippie and clean up the rest of the blood in the nostril. If you do not get the blood clot out, then it will possibly bleed again later that day of the next day.

My 19 year old has them occasionally (always has), but not as often as he used to. I do it once in a great while also. I feel like it can be blamed on dry weather. Something the doctor said tipped me off on that.

I know this is frustrating but if she is not complaining of any sort of pain, you should try to narrow down the cause. My children always got nose bleeds during the winter because the air in the house was so dry because of the central heat. It causes the sinus to dry out and crack, causing bleeding. Try getting a humidifier, I bought one at Walgreens for about $20.00. There is another trick that only worked because the inside unit for my central heat and air is over my shower. If your unit is set up that way you can turn your shower on with only hot water while your unit is running. This will pull humidity into the system and into the house. You can also use a saline mist or drops a few times a day. Saline solution can get expensive so you can make your own by boiling 8 oz water and adding 1/2 teaspoon salt. Use an eye dropper and put a couple of drops in her nose. Since it is only salt and water, it won't hurt her if she swallows the liquid.
If these don't work, I would have her doctor check her out.

Good luck.

Hi R.,

My son has frequent nose bleeds that started at a very young age. The doctor told us to daily spray his nose with saline spray and put vaseline on a q-tip and rub it inside his nose daily. This keeps the membranes moist to help reduce the dry weather problem. My son is five now and has the whole drill down of pinching the nose and holding it while facing down towards the floor. I had also let his teachers know that he does get them and if they give him a few tissues, he can take care of it. Keep Oxy Clean spray ready for those blood stained pillow cases and sheets.

Good luck,
B.

Good luck.

Keep the washcloths and cold water handy for the acute incidents...Is the air too dry in your house? A steamer or humidifier will act as a preventitive measure. Later, V.

Hi R.:

When my son was about 3 years old, he was having the same problem.

I brought him to the ENT after it had been going on for a while. The doc ended up having to cauterize (sp?) inside one of his nostils.

Good luck!

My 3 year old had the same issue and what we use is a humidifier. Our house used to be extremely dry and every night that I would not use the humidifier, her nose would bleed. Now that we've moved I don't have to use it as often except when I turn the heat up. If the temperature gets too warm then i'll have to turn it on as well. Give it a try using the humidifier on a nightly basis and see if that helps any. If after a week that doesn't work then I would probably take your daughter to see the doctor because it may be something more serious.

One of mine (twin two year olds) also has been getting them. Some are mild, abut there have been a few that were a little scary. I used to get them a lot when I was little, especially this tie of year. It's a weather thing-barometric pressure and climate changes. As long as they don't last forever and stop failry quickly, and as long as he's not in pain, I wouldn't worry about it. Ask your pedi at your next visit; or you cal alwasy call your pedi's office and speak with a nurse. The worst part about it for me is the cleaning! :) My son doesn't even know it's hapepning!

My son has had nosebleeds since he was 2... I remember the first one I freaked out!

Here's some advice we've received from different docs over the years....

Run a humidifier in her room
Rub vasaline in her nose before bed
Afrin nose spray will shrink capallaries and help stop the bleeding
Pinch the nose (like something smells bad) and hold it for 10 minutes

I actually have bought some 'nose pinchers' because my son's are frequent during the winter, and my hands cramp up with all the pinching -- they're called Spirometry Nose Clips and I buy them online. The school nurse uses them.

Good luck!

We use a cool mist humidifier every night while she sleeps. If her nose does bleed, we use saline drops and vaseline in her nose. The humidifier has stopped the nose bleeds this winter.
