Toddler Haircut - Brookfield,IL

My 26 mo. daughter has very fine/wispy hair. It naturally all falls forward from the back of her head (like some kind of toddler comb over?) and often falls over her eyes. It just grows short on the sides and long in the back, yeah, it kind of looked like a mullet for awhile *eek*

I would hate to cut bangs but need to keep it under control. Ideas for a cute cut? Or should I just stick with pigtails and headbands until it gets long/thick enough?

What can I do next?

Both of my girls have similar hair to what you described. What I have done is to part the hair over to the side and then clip the hair up from the face in a barret clipped on the other side. It looks really cute, keeps the hair out of the face, and doesn't cause as much breakage as hair bands.

I've got one like that too. Give her an angled bob--short in the back and tapered to the front. This is the most adorable haircut on a little one. Looks very hip but not overdone at the same time. Super cute. You can still do the barrette thing in the front if you want, to keep it out of her eyes, but don't be too quick to dis the bangs. They can be very sweet and when they're little like that they could care less about growing them out when you're ready for her to. Have fun!

My daughter had hair like that, too. It didn't seem to grow well on the sides at first. I finally had it cut all tapered around her face with bangs and it looked really cute. Kept it out of her eyes. We were watching old home movies last weekend and I forgot how adorable she was!

My daughter had the same 'do going on at that age! We just used gentle barettes, and they seemed to work just fine. Bangs my look more like a mullet than ever! LOL!

Whatever you do start clips now even if she doesn't need them. My daughter was one of those whose hair never grew (even with little trims to stimulate growth) so we never had to deal with clips and pony tails. Now that she's in her 3's and has a very strong will she WILL NOT wear them! They go in she pulls them out. And her hair is always in her face. So get them used to it early so they just accept it rather than think they get to decide.

And for sure take her in for a cute little cut. Even a little trim shapes it all out nicely and makes them look so fresh. A good hairdresser will know what to do.

Good luck!

I agree with Jenna N. My daughter had a baby mullet too going on. But that was thanks to the hubby, lol. She is two now. Her hair was the same as your daughter long in the back and short and the sides. My hubby couldn't stand her bangs being in her eyes anymore she he decided to cut them. He cut them alright, lol. I had to wait awhile before they grew out to take her in to get everything evened out. I just did it a month ago and it is so cute! Her hair is already growin in the back more and on the sides. Looks so much better. I am able to give her a little pony tail on top or on the side of her head. I had someone else tell me not to cut her hair or wait as long as I could so that it would grow in thicker. They were dead wrong. It has only been a month and her hair has already grown in so much better.

I'm not really sure, but I'd recommend a friend of mine to you, even just to call. She runs Salon 440 in St. Charles. She always does a great job, and I'm sure she'd be willing to give you suggestions.

One thing that no one realizes is that the sooner you trim hair the better, you will only help stimulate the growth of it if you cut it. Get it trimmed and you will be pleasantly surprised how quickly it will grow. I cut my son's hair when he was only a few months old and his hair started coming in quickly and nice and full.

DON'T CUT BANGS!!!
I'm a hairdresser and I'm not a fan of baby girls bangs. Sorry. Why don't you keep the back cut till the sides and front meet up with the back? Like a short bob (like Suri Cruise). Then the front side swipe it with a barrette. That's cute.

See if you cut off that thin wispy hair shorter, it'll grow out thicker. It's that wispy stuff because it that old baby hair. AND the bands from the pigtails are most likely causeing breakage on her fine hair. Lay off the bands for a while. Spray a little leave-in conditioner on her hair so it has a little weight to her hair and it'll keep it from 'fly away'.

Headbands that are fabric and stretchy work great. Go to kidsnips!

Hye K.,

My daughter (2-1/2) had very thin hair too. I took her to Great Clips and shaved all her hair last summer and now she has beautiful curls of even hair and she looks cute. That can help you. She is very young still, you can do that right now and she will not feel bad, but once she grows up, she may not let you do that. If not all, you may want to trim her hair as much short as you can. Trust me she will get thicker and fuller hair.

Good Luck!!!

My first daughter (now 4) had a baby mullet going on when she was about 1 year old. It drove me crazy so I shortened the back and cut bangs. The bangs were SO cute -- when they laid down right. But then there were the trimmings, the hat hair, static, etc. And when we wanted to grow them out, it was a HUGE pain in the butt.

Now I have 3 other litle girls and I refuse to go thru that again. The twins (just turned 2) have hair that falls into their face, so I just put "palm trees" (ponytails) on top of their heads. It looks cute and the hair stays away from their eyes.

I would go ahead and trim it just enough to make it look neat (may be time for a professional hairdresser, though) She probably has a cowlick that makes her hair move in a certain direction. A pro, can help you figure out how to deal with that. The pigtail and headband idea is good too. We use a lot of barrets in our house to keep the eyes visible....I think bangs are cute!
