Toddler Beds - Are They OK to Be Placed Against Wall?

My girls' toddler beds have always been in the middle of the room/wall with the headboard against the wall and sides away from any walls. My husband had a fear of them somehow getting stuck between the wall and bed and suffocating. It has been a year since they've been in the toddler beds, and one of them asked this week if we can rearrange their room. The only thing we can do to rearrange is to put the beds against a wall/in a corner. This would actually be great because we'd have the entire floor open, but I wanted to get some opinions as to if this is ok. They've never fallen out of bed, and they will not get out of bed in the middle of the night for any reason (they yell for us instead). I think it is ok...but would like to hear from others. Thank you.

What can I do next?

My son's toddler bed is against the wall. We've never had a problem with my active 2 year old falling between the bed and the wall. We have carpeting in the room, and the bed does not slide -- the legs of the bed are indented in the carpet, and hold it in place really well.

My sons bed has ALWAYS been against the wall. There would simply be no room for a dresser and toys if it were any other way. we put his all the way up against the wall and up until he was 3 had a rail on the side. He too doesn't normally get out of bed, merely yells for me. For the most part, when I was growing up my bed was always against the wall if I had a day bed. I grew up with waterbeds though--the good ole ones that had wood around and a bladder in the middle--now that I would worry about getting stuck in the side in! :) Best of Luck!

If they don't fall/get out of bed at night then I'd say go ahead. My nephew's toddler bed was always against the wall with no problems ever. I'm sure they'll do just fine.

My daughter always preferred having her bed up against the wall. I finally talked her into putting in the middle of the room at 14. I always worried more about them falling off the bed than them getting stuck by the wall. The kids for some reason feel secure with the wall being by one side. Maybe it made them feel like monsters wouldn't get them. The only way having the beds by the wall would be a problem would be if your child had special needs. Kids move around at night and seem to manage to not suffocate in their bedding. I would not worry about it. I have 4 kids and nothing like that ever happened. I had 4 younger siblings never happened. Again I worry more about falling out hitting heads.

by the time your kids are old enough to be in a toddler bed they are going to wake up and move if they are in an undcomfortable (for them) position in their sleep. The only reason to be worried with babies is because they don't have enough muscle control to get themselves unstuck. Any toddler bed should be light enough for your child to move by themselves if it was necessary, unless you made one at home out of concrete.

My daughter has stuffed animals wedged between the bed and the wall. It works for us and she likes to have "friends".

most toddler beds have the small rails that extend about 1/4 of the way down from the headboard, this keeps them from rolling off or getting stuck between the mattress and the wall, should you move them there. Not to mention at age three they are either going to scoot the bed away from the wall due to their body weight or be able to get themselves unstuck enough to yell for you should something ever happen, not that it is likely. even at 6 i worry much more about my DD falling out of bed than i do her getting stuck next to the wall.

I have a 22 month old and his is against the bed. I guess I never thought about him getting stuck there I just figured it'd keep him from falling out! So far, so good.

You are asking from a safety standpoint. The reason it is a problem to put a baby on a bed is because their head is relatively the biggest part of their body, and they have weak neck muscles. They can get themselves caught in the crack of the bed between the wall, and be unable to get their head out of it and suffocate. By the time they are 3, their body should have grown into their head and it shouldn't be a worry them getting caught. But if you want to be sure, ask their doctor. Call the office and ask if it should be a concern about them becoming trapped.

My kids have been in twin beds against the wall for about a year, youngest was around 16 mos then and with one bed he had there was a little space between the mattress and wall, but the bed was against the wall, we just put a long pillow there and never had any problems. In our case they would not suffocate at all. Right now our bedrooms are side by side and I can hear the baby if he thumps against the wall and I just always go and check to make sure all is well. I also still keep the monitor one just in case.

I think it would be fine. I always had my boys' beds right against the wall.

We have a 5 1/2 year old and a 2 1/2 year old. The 5 year old has had her bed up against the wall for at least a year or so and hasn't had any trouble. If you're particularly worried about it, go ahead and get an extra bed rail that might help prevent them getting stuck between the wall and the bed.
