Curious to know when some of you switched from a crib to a toddler bed and is it worth it or is better to just go to a twin bed with rails?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your comments. I'm going to wait it out a couple more months he hasn't tried to climb out yet. I think I'm gonna go to a toddler bed. For my own peace of mind. My son rolls and flip flops around so if he falls off i rather it be a short distance. I'm afraid if i go the twin route with railing he may still try to climb over those eventually. Thanks.

I switched my daughter to a toddler bed around 16 months. I just bought one of the plastic white ones with the metal bar underneath to hold to crib matress from Walmart for like $30 and it's been great. She's now 2 1/2 and she still loves it and it has been a great bed. My plan is to pass it on to my son when he's ready and buy her a twin bed. But that bed has been wonderful! I love the toddler bed right now because she has so many toys and a playhouse in her room that it gives her plenty of room to play. When the twin bed goes in the playhouse will have to go in the back yard. Good luck!

I switched to a toddler bed when my son discovered he could climb out of his crib (which was about 2 1/2). He was able to use the toddler bed until he grew too tall at age 4. Look in the paper, I was able to find a used one with a mattress to fit for 25.00. Plus, most toddler beds now I think take crib mattresses anyway, so no need to spend more than you have to...hope that helps!

My son was 11½ months old when he got his race car toddler bed. The first night he slept in it, he did great! We never had and problems from the bed, and it doesn't have any rails. In my opinion, the toddler beds are just a decoration. I mean come on, a bed is a bed.

We moved our son at 12 months. He hated his crib and could climb out of it (running by 9.5months so yeah). So worth it for us :)

We switched my daughter (2) to a toddler bed about 2 months ago. She likes to flop around in her sleep. It is not uncommon to see her half on the bed and half on the floor. Sometimes I think she just falls out of bed and sleeps on the floor, as I have found her there a couple times. Personally, I think a twin bed it too high up for toddlers, but I have seen it work. It is really your preference. If you think your child rolls around a lot I would say to just get a toddler bed to save some bumps and bruises.

My daughter was 18 months when i put her in a toddler bed. Because of her age and the fact that she already had so many toys......i bought her a brand name (fischer price) bedroom set with canopy bed, toy chest, vanity, and rocking chair that all matched for Christmas. She stayed in the toddler bed until she was 6 yrs old, which i then replaced with a twin bed that was given to me. When she first started in the toddler bed, i did put a side rail on the side that was not against the wall. She loved her canopy bed and thought that she was a big girl.

Tip: With a toddler bed you alreadly have the mattress. You child will probably be able to sleep in it until he/she is 7. Plus the bedding is cheaper too.

I got my little boy a toddle bed when he was about to turn 2. Everyone told me to wait til he was able to crawl out of his crib. A toddler bed can be a great idea, but me myself I really wish i would have just bought the twin bed. He don't ever sleep in his own bed anymore so for me i was really pointless to buy it.

I used a toddler bed with both of my girls. My oldest was in a toddler bed at 14 months and stayed there until she was almost 3. My youngest stayed in that same bed for another year after that. I would say go with a toddler bed then go to a twin, they are less than $100 and with my girls being climbers I felt much better with them in a toddler bed and not in a twin size that sits too far up for them to climb down and get themselves hurt.

I say Toddler beds are a waste of money. My daughter went straight to a twin bed with rails when she was two.

How old is your child? We put our oldest in a toddler bed pretty early around 14 months because he would not sleep in his crib, turns out he didn't like that either and we ended up getting him a twin when he turned two and he loved it. My middle child slept in her crib and then we used the toddler bed for her and she used it until she was three if we did not already have it from our son I most likely would have got her a twin bed when she became too old for her crib.

i took my children from a crib to toddler bed beween 18 months to two years because all children like to learn how to get out of the crib. Alweays being afraid of them getting hurt i put them toddler beds, However the toddler bed is no more than a bed on the floor with a crib mattress none of them lasted more than 6 months. Went to twin beds with gaurd rails. And then went to bunk bed sets. (toddler beds are small and cute for little ones) but honestly a waste of money hun. Go for the twin bed

I have a 23 month old son and we put him in a toddler bed when he was about 15 months old. I am ready for him to be in a twin bed now so I would say if you are having to buy one...go ahead and get a twin bed and put rails on it. The only reason we used the toddler bed was because we got one for free. It is kind of a waste of money to get a toddler bed I think.
Good luck!

Hi A.,

For some reason, my kids hated the toddler bed. They kept rolling out of it. So, we got the twin beds and double bed rails -- the kind that are hooked together under the mattress. We tried a wall and a single bed rail with my older son, but he found a way to get between the bed and the rail one night and that scared me. The double rails have been great. Because they tighten to the mattress, they are really safe and it's still pretty easy to make the bed and change they sheets. By the way, some of the double-rail systems can also fit a full or queen size bed -- there is a handle on the side you tighten to fit your mattress.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

We put our son in a twin bed right out of the crib at about 11 months. Not out of developmental needs but he was just getting too darn big. He would wander in his sleep inhis crib like most babies do but wake himself up smacking his head against the sides of the crib. We looked at toddler beds but since they are esentially the same size that was not a solution for us. We went to our local wholesale retailer and bought a set of bunk beds. We only use the top bunk as a single twin bed on the floor and the advantage of that is that it had a railing around 3 sides (head, foot, and one side) of the bed. We placed the side with no rail against the wall so that he is surrounded by railing on all other sides. Then we placed body pillows (tucked in) against the wall to cushion him. He loves his big boy bed and has had no problems at all with the switch, in fact he loves to go to sleep in his big boy bed. So cheaper, safer, and the bonus of a second bed for company were all benefits for us.

I switched to a toddler bed at 2, but only because my husband was adament about it for whatever reason. If he had been crawling out of the crib, I would have done it sooner, but I felt the longer I could peacefully keep him contained the better. Of course it worked out fine, but that is not always the case. And the only reason we switched to a toddler bed and not a twin was becuase his crib converts to a toddler bed, so we didn't have to buy anything. I think either is fine as long as there are rails.

My personal opinion is twin bed with rails. Yeah you can use the crib mattress with the toddler bed but it won't last long they grow so quick:). The twin can stay with you alot longer my oldest 2 still sleep in the beds we put them in when they outgrew their cribs. I think it's a better financial decision to go with the twin.

Hey A.,
I put my son in a "big boy bed" around his second birthday. It really is all up to you and how you feel about were you child is (if you feel they are ready!). And my personal opinion is ......especially if your budget doesnt bend much like ours........is that if your crib changes to a toddler bed great!, if not, I personally went with the twin with side gaurd. The twin will last so much longer than the toddler bed. My son is a big boy,(very tall) so he woulda out grown that toddler bed in no time!! But really it is all up to what YOU are comfratable with!! Hope this helps some!

My sister and her husband has two kids one sleep in a toddler bed and the other in a crib. Well they are debating if they should just skip over the toddle bed for their younger one. Cause their older one have just about outgrown it and they need to get her a twin size bed soon. She didnt stay in the toddle bed to long. The younger one sometimes refuse to sleep in his crib and will only go asleep in the toddler bed. which is a sign that he is ready to move to a bigger bed. Only problem they are scared about he tend to get up and roam throughout the night. And their rooms is on the second floor with 15 steps seperating the top and bottom floor. I would say just skip the toddler bed even though they are cute and just go with the twin size.

I went from a crib to a toddler with both my older kids and with my middle child espicially my first boy and completely the dare devil and also accident prone! I got him a race car bed that's blue, and it's only about a foot off the ground and to me that was key because if he did happen to roll out, he at least wouldn't have far to fall, plus it was fun! It was something he wanted to sleep in. And it fitted our crib mattress so I didn't have to buy anything new and he's 4in a 1/2 almost now and he's been in it since he was one or 1 and a half, so it's lasted us quite some time! It's been wonderful. We are moving next month to Idaho and not planning on taking it with us, if you wanted to buy it from me, I'd give you a REALLY REASONABLE price. Like under 50. I don't know where you can find a bed that cheap and it's still in REALLY good condition. Well let me know if your interested and good luck!

I put my daughter in a toddler bed at around 16 months. I wouldn't recommend a twin bed just yet because my little girl flops around alot in her sleep and has rolled over the rails on the toddler bed twice already and once slid off the bottom half of the bed (she's 18mo now). I'm just thankful that the toddler bed is so low to the ground she didn't get hurt. I don't think I could say the same thing if she was in a regular bed with just rails. I think a toddler bed is a great investment.

My son was about 8 months old when he actually started CLIMBING out of his crib, even with the mattress on the lowest pegs. We decided to get him a blue race car toddler bed around 9 or 10 months. We bought it from a local thrift store for a decent price, and set it up as a surprise while he was at grandma's. He came home, and went into his room, and immediately squealed with glee. He jumped right onto it, giggling, and then ran over to me, grabbed my hand, and took me in, as if to show it to me too. That night, he went right to sleep on it, and has ever since. He is almost 2 1/2 years old now, and he still loves it. I even gave it a personal touch by painting his name and some numbers on it, and detailing the headlights and wheels with acrylic paint. Sure, they mught be costly, but think about it...they're for kids. They're fun, and you only get to be a kid once. say it's a fun AND easy way to transfer from crib to bed, and it's safe too, because the bed is so low to the ground. You can also find some with built-in toy boxes and shelves. Also, you can just use the mattress from the crib, as it fits right in. They are usually made of plastic, which makes them so easy to clean, and less chance of them hitting their heads and getting seriously injured, or getting a splinter.
Good Luck!
