You've gotta buy the old classic book "everyone poops".
kids love it.
My 27 month old daughter suddenly has developed an intense aversion to going to the bathroom -- specifically, having a poop. She's still in diapers and we've been trying to get her to use the potty (to no avail) but haven't been pushing it. But I actually don't think that this has anything to do with it. She's crying, running around holding her bottom, saying she doesn't want "poo to come out". This has been going on for a couple of days.

I agree with another mom that it sounds like your daughter doesn't understand what is happening---maybe she feels like part of her is getting lost/taken. For YOU (because she is too young to understand the language/pictures), try looking at a childrens book called "Parts" I think the author is Tedd Arnold) which is about a child who is afraid his body is falling apart because he doesn't know how his body works. For example, he sees hairs coming out and thinks he'll be bald, sees belly button lint and thinks his "stuffing is coming out". If you think about it, to a young child, something like losing a tooth (if you don't know what's happening) would be terribly frightening!
Also she may not like the fact that it is involuntary (another thing she can't comprehend) and she can't even control her own body in some ways.
There is a picture book called "Everybody Poops" that might be age appropriate for your daughter to look at with you.
Hello E.,
Did she have a painful or hard poop the last time she went without complaining? Either way, she could have torn somewhere done there which causes pain. Or she could have a palup (sp) or something up there. I would make a dr appointment before this gets out of hand. If she keeps holding it in she could become constipated. You could also try giving her something like apple juice or some high fiber food to loosen it up where she won't have as much control of it coming out.
My daughter is almost always consipated so every time she poops I have to listen to her cry, "mommy, hold me, tummy hurts." It's heart breaking.
Best of luck,
C.
I have a 27 month old and she has been potty trained for a couple of months, but she didn't want to go poop either and was holding it for 4 days or so. I mainly focused on keeping her from getting constipated. I gave her Milk of Magnesia one time and then my doctor said I could give her Pedialax as needed to help her go. I also have her eat a lot of fruit (especially raw apples) and ice cream also seems to help for some reason. It has gotten a lot better in the last couple of weeks and we also give her money (magic pennies) when she goes poop and she gets to put them in her piggy bank. I am thinking she must have had a painful poop and that is why she is scared.
