Ticks Are All over My Pup! :( I Am Freaking Out!!

My parents kept one of our dogs for us when we went out of town and now he is covered with seed ticks. We got home from their house yesterday and I just noticed them today. I bathed him with F/T shampoo, cleaned his bedding and crate and vacuumed the entire house. I feel like they are crawling all over me!!!

I want to use a topical treatment and was wondering which one to use. We don't have tick issues here, just fleas, so I use Comfortis. I am not sure which tick treatment works the best and which ones to avoid.

Added: What should I do with them? I pulled off a bunch of them, wrapped them up in a tissue and flushed them. Should I pull them all off ? They are hard to get off because they are tiny specks. I read tonight to put them in a cup of alcohol. I am open to ANY and ALL suggestions regarding how to deal with this. Seriously, I have never dealt with ticks and I am totally grossing out!

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Frontline and if you notice they are still there after you bathe him take him to the vet for him/her to get them out. Ew, nothing makes me cringe like a tick (well except a roach I guess). Nasty buggers, What did you do with them?

frontline. Only use that. Keep it on all year round. you'll have no issues. you can get it at any pet store or from your vet. make sure you got them all off him and I hope you burned them!

I use frontline on my dog and cats. Don't use the spot treatments that you get at the grocery store; they can be harmful to your pets.

Put some frontline on and they will die and drop off.

I think once the dog is infected, you have to take them to the vet to have the ticks not only killed, but removed. It can be a painstaking process but the heads need to be removed. If they aren't, then infection can occur.
They need to be properly removed and disposed of, that's all I know. My mother lived in the country and in spite of her best attempts, her little dogs got ticks.
I know it's a pain, but you need some help making sure they are erradicated properly and then the dog treated to keep from being reinfested.

Best wishes.

HI SK,

Take him to the vet. This happened to one of our dogs and the vet actually had to anesthesize him to get them all off. It took several days for your dog to start feeling normal again. Please be watchful as well. Our lab pup was infected with something that went straight to the neurological system and he became aggressive and actually attacked our other dogs AND my husband. We did have to put him down. The vet attributed it to the multitude of ticks.

Wishing you well!!
M.

We use First Shield, I have used Advantix, Frontline, and Revolution. They all work. I use whatever the vet gives me.
I would first take him to the vet and get rid of all the ticks, have him bathed at the vet's office and then given the flea/tick treatment.
I can't miss a month of our preventative.

I would agree take them to the vet to be dipped, they will remove the ticks too.

I think you should take him to the vet ticks carry nasty diseases you want to catch it early. We burn the ticks in the sink after we remove them.

Get him to a vet! Ticks have to be taken out a certain way (with a tweezers or smothered in nail polish, etc) so that the head doesn't stay hooked in after you remove it. It's not just what you put them in after they're out -- it's the getting them out correctly that's the tricky part.

Shampoos will not do it .. and they can lay eggs right after you shampoo... go to your vet and wash all the bedding before your dog returns.

Good luck
