This Might Be a Gross Question... :(

I'm currently 14 wks pregnant with my second child and earlier this week I began experiencing yeast infection-like symptoms so my OB went ahead and prescribed me a vaginal cream that cures yeast infections without seeing me for an evaluation. I'm not too worried about that, I'm more worried about the medication itself, "Terconazole" cream. I have a three day supply of cream and applicators that I use to administer the cream vaginally. Of course I read all the leaflet info that came with the meds, and I'm curious as to whether any of you moms out there have had to use this before during a pregnancy. If I weren't pregnant I probably wouldn't give using this med a second thought. But since I am, I'm a bit of a worrywort. The OB said it's okay to use, but I read something in the leaflet that said this med shouldn't be used by pregnant women during their first trimester. I'm two weeks into my second trimester, but still...The timing is so close.

I'm sorry if it seems like I'm rambling, but I'm just worried about the potential side effects and I guess I'm looking for reassurance from some real people. I freaked at the thought of having a yeast infection and it possibly harming my baby, now the meds...And, are there any natural/homeopathic ways of curing a yeast infection?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I went ahead and used the medication to cure the infection. As far as I can tell, it worked well and aside from a couple of minor side effects (headache and mild stomach cramping) I feel fine. I think I just overracted because I was so freaked out about getting a yeast infection during pregnancy! You know you don't want ANYTHING to go wrong "down there" when you're pregnant! :) Thanks to everyone who responded. I'll also consider watching my diet - it's funny and I hadn't thought about it until I started reading the responses, but I haven't eaten any yogurt or drank any cranberry juice in the last couple of weeks because we just didn't have them in the house and they're normal staples in our refrigerator. Thanks again!

Christina-
I had a yeast infection with my third. My DR. did see me for it. He told me to just go to the grocery store, and get some of the monistat 7 day cream. If you would feel more comfortable using an over the counter versus a Rx, try that. It worked fine, and my son was alright. Hope this helps.

Hi Christina,

There are definitely natural ways to treat and cure a yeast infection. Garlic and yogurt applied internally are two extremely effective ways. This website (http://www.buzzle.com/articles/home-remedies-yeast-infect...) outlines how to do it. It sounds gross, yes, but it's better than a drug!

Good luck!

My daughter, who is 4, was getting them frequently for a while and the peds. told me to give her yogurt every day to clear them up. I started this about 2 months ago and she hasn't had one since. You could try that?

I had that problem during my last pregnancy. It was the most horrible thing ever!!!! I had NEVER had that problem before...& it really does gross you out. I had not only vaginal yeast infections, but also in my armpits(I had always used roll-on secret deoderant, and have switched to the aerosol and don't have that problem any more). My OB suggested a product called RepHresh vaginal gel. It helps replace the pH balance in the vaginal area to prevent yeast. It is expensive, but worth it!!!! You can also eat plenty of yogurt. That helps replace the "good" bacteria in that area to help prevent yeast. Good luck, & congrats on your pregnancy!

It has happened to me once each time I was pregnant. The medication is safe and effective. I used one of the over the counter brands, and it worked fine...no side effects....

I'm not sure of any natural methods to getting rid of the infection, but I'm sure there are some out there...

The best yogurt to eat is Dannon Yogurt of any kind. Dannon has the natural yeast cultures in it. I had the signs of a yeast infection when I was 8 weeks pregnant. So of course I called my Mom, she told me to buy some Dannon yogurt. My yeast infection cleared up in less than three days. Best of luck to you.

Plain yogurt. In your vagina. With a pad to catch the drips. Doesn't stay up there very well so do before bed or when you're going to be lying down for a while.

Kudos to you for reading the leaflet. It's your body and it's your kid --- you can't be too cautious.

A yeast infection is a sign of an internal imbalance. You can't win by fighting it externally. Candida (yeast) is everywhere and everyone has it in them. It's just a matter of balance. If your gut has a lot of friendly bacteria, the candida (yeast) cannnot grow out of control. If you ever had antibiotics, that wipes out the good and bad bacteria... and it allows the candida (yeast) to proliferate. Once the yeast are out of control, the only way to effectively deal with them is through diet.

The best yeast diet is the Body Ecology Diet. It's key feature is eating tons of probiotic rich foods like kefir and cultured veggies.

There is a huge link between yeast infections and autism. When you have an imbalance of gut flora, then your kid will have an imbalance. This will cause a myriad of issues - colicky, food issues, eczema, asthma, allergies, ADD, ADHD, autism, etc, etc.

My advice would be too get rid of the yeast as quickly as possible. Maybe check into other treatments, but also do as the other person said and eat to avoid it. Whenever I take an antibiotic, I also take acidophilus (spelling?) in a capsule form, because yogurt doesn't sit well in my stomach. It has never failed me, but only if I take it before I get symptoms. I have a friend that douched with plain yogurt and had results (talk about gross) But the idea is to introduce good bacteria. She's right you can't prevent it externally, but you may need to clear up this outbreak that way. I'd guess your being pregnant has created an imbalance. I wish I could advise on the treatment doc provided but I wouldn't venture it. It is important to get rid of it, and maybe doc has taken that in concideration.

Christina,

I had the same issue. I was about 8 months pregnant when I got a yeast infection. I had never had one before so I was very nervous, especially to have one during pregnancy, but the OgGyn assured me that it was common and not a big deal. I took "Terconazole" cream too. It worked just fine with no symptoms and now I have a beautiful, perfectly healthy 10 month old. So, don't worry.

Christina ~
I'm an OB nurse, so hope this helps. At 14 weeks, you've probably had an ultrasound already to confirm dates. Early ultrasounds are very accurate for dating. So, if your ultrasound says you're 14 weeks, you are. At this point, every day makes a difference, let alone weeks. Yes, we often prescribe this medication after 12 weeks. The 1st trimester is the most important time for the development of the fetus. Since you're past that point, you're fine to use the medication. Yes, diet can help, but also during pregnancy hormones change things in your body, so you tend to be more inclined to get yeast infections, bladder infections, dehydrated, etc.
hope that helps!

When I was preggo (3 years ago) I was told anyt 7 day cream was fine, but not the 1 or 3 day and definately not the pill. I used the regular over the counter 7 day cream (probably Monistat, but I do not remember the exact brand I used). If you are uncomfortable with it then call your doc and tell her your concerns.
