Thinking About Using This Birth control....Should I?

I am thinking about going to get the birthcontrol "thing" that they put up there and it lasts for 5 years. I cannot think of the name at the moment. It looks like a T and it is supposed to work for a long time. I was wondering if anyone has tried it and how it has worked out for them....or any bad experiences with it. Please let me know. I do plan on getting pregnant but I am not consistent enough to take a daily pill and I hate needles. I need something that will not have long term affects and will work for a long time.

Add on: I have medicaid....will they cover the cost of it?

What can I do next?

I got the Paraguard (copper) IUD when I was nursing my youngest because I didn't want any hormones and I've been happy with it. My periods have been heavier, and typically last a full week now, but it is nice not having to think about it. Also, the copper IUD is supposed to actually last 10 years, versus the Mirena IUD which lasts 5 years.

My sister has the same thing (she got hers before I did) and has had some problems with cramping, but I think her doctor is going to put her on very low dose birth control pills for two months with is supposed to clear that up. But we both are glad we chose this option.

I have had great success thus far with the Mirena IUD. I've had it in almost a year. I notice know real PMS symptoms except crazy (yet harmless) dreams, which I have pretty regularly anyway. I usually have what I guess you could call a period about every 4 to 6 weeks--usually consisting of a couple of days of very light bleeding and then it's over. I think it is worth a shot. Good luck!

Oh yeah, I'm certain Medicaid will cover it also. :)

I'm pretty sure you are talking about the Mirena IUD. This one contains hormones the other is Paragard IUD that does not contain hormones. Well most swear that it's the greatest thing since slice cheese but all are not happy. Some have have breakthrough bleeding, hair loss and other problems but it's different for everybody. I would look up some personal reviews and see what you think about it.
Of course if not happy, you can always get it removed. :)

While not for everyone, I used a diaphragm because I hated the hormonal issues with birth control pills.

It's called the Mirena IUD and it is wonderful!!! I have had mine for exactly 5 years and will be putting in another one within the next month. The most inconvenient thing is the occasional break through bleeding while your body adjusts. The periods all but disappear and I haven't personally heard of anyone getting pregnant while using it. I love mine and can't say enough good things about this form of birth control. You don't have to think about it at all. Good luck!!!

I am not for birth control as there always seems to be negative side effects after long term use. I did use the pill off and on for probably 15 years though that was before I became more educated on the bad effects. What did I do after I got off the pill? I used a natural balancing cream to help balance my hormones and avoid sex days 9-16 of my cycle. Those are the days when you are likely to get pregnant depending on when you ovulate...that was from a Physician's Assistant. Then when we were ready to start trying, those were the days we focused on having "fun"!

I have had several friends that have used that kind of birth control and it has worked and when you decide to get pregnant they take it out.

The Mirena IUD is probably what you are referring too, and I just had mine removed after 6 months. I dont seem to tolerate hormones very well, and quite frankly, trying to force your body to do, or not do, something that it wants to seems like lots of things could get thrown off. For me, I was SOOOO testy! I was more short tempered with my family. I had it taken out 2 or 3 weeks ago because I just could not take wondering if I was dealing with depression or what was up, and I can tell a little difference, but my husband says that he sees a pretty big difference, so I guess it was worth it! Good luck with your decision, I know it is a tough one ~A.~

Mirena IUD is exactly what I have- Benefits?
1.) my insurance co-pay took care of my BC for 5 years, so that made it VERY cheap!

2.) I tried EVERY birth control imagined under the Sun to control my periods. I had a Non-stop period for 3 months with a total break from it for 2 weeks. So now I am down to a mere 3 days.

3.) PILLS- Yet another thing to worry about and juggle with two kiddos and a FT Job while considering going back to school!

I feel like a Ronco Commercial when I say "set it, and forget it!" :o) but with Mirena IUD it is virtually just that. At your yearly exams your doctor will evaluate it to make sure it is still where it needs to be.

IF THERE WERE ANY FEARS of it being like the 1970's IUD, worry no more- Did you know that the failure rate of a Mirena IUD is .02% and the BC Pill itself is as high as 2%? YEP- the final BIG SELLER FOR ME- is that antibiotics won't cancel out your BC when you have an IUD! SO NO Second Guessing!

Hi E.--

I think that you are referring to the Mirena IUD. I have had mine since Nov 07 and I absolutely love it! In fact my OBGYN has Mirena as well in addition to most of her staff. SO that right there told me that this is a great product. You will bleed off and on for a few months typically not to exceed over 4 months. You put it in and forget it! I am a single mom of a 20 month old and am so forgetful to take a BC pill that this if perfect for me! I cannot say anything bad about Mirena bc I have not had any issues.
