Things to Do in Maui with 6 Year Old

We are going to Maui at the end of April and I was wondering about things to do with my 6 year old daughter that you won't find on tripadvisor. Is there anything great to do that isn't so touristy? We are going to do some touristy things, but I was hoping to find some off the beaten path things to do. Or does anyone know of any place that does the touristy things without the touristy prices? I don't mind paying for the experience, but if we can get the same experience for less, that would be awesome.

We don't really 'do' anything. We go to the beach and snorkel- every day. We stay in Lahaina (it never rains there). You can rent snorkel gear for the week pretty inexpensively. My son was able to snorkel at 6 - it came more naturally to him than to me and floating in salt water with flippers is so much easier than swimming in a pool. I don't think the road to Hana trip around the island would have been of any interest to my son. Visiting Haleakala (the extinct volcano) was fun and probably would be fun to do with a child. Mama's Fish House is very good - but definitely pricey. Have not done a luau.

It has been a few years since we were last in Maui so my ideas might be more on the touristy list by now....

Whale watching was the best experience we had. We got on a small dinghy type boat and rode out to see the whales. It was an experience like non other.... the whales are beautiful. The owners do not promise that you will see whales. You may pay the $60 or so for a 2 hour trip and never see a whale. However, we've been twice on Spring Break and saw lots of whales both times. We caught a boat in Lahania

Lahania also has an authentic luau. This was on the beach area and very nice.

Sugar Train was fun.

We did not opt to do the drive with the hairpin turns...

There are options to leave hotel before dawn and bike ride down the mountain.

When we were leaving the island to head home, we drove to Paia and ate at Mama's Fish House which is a great place to eat. Pricey....tho

We stayed in either Kaanapoli or Kapula Bay and would drive to Lahania for shopping and adventures. It was not a bad drive... probably 10 minutes or less when we were there.

When driving from the airport to the Kaanapoli and Kapula Bay area, we would stop at the places set up on the side of the road like a farmers market and get fresh coconut, etc.

We took our time, drove around the area and explored on our own.

Whatever you do... I am sure you will enjoy your experience. Maui is beautiful.

The great thing about Hawaii is you don't need to "do" anything. Just exploring the beaches and parks and pools is enough to keep any kid happy! And swimming in that warm ocean....sigh...
But, since you asked,
you MUST have a meal at Mama's Fish House! Yes it's expensive but worth the splurge.
You can also do a bike ride down the volcano (can't remember the name but everybody knows it.)
And of course go to a luau!!! Again, expensive but worth the experience.
We have been to Maui, Kauai, Oahu and the big island several times with three kids over the years, from babies to teens, and it's always been wonderful. Something about the air there just made my kids happy and forget to fight with each other :-)

We love Maui and go back about every two years so we have been there with our kids when they were six and younger. In trying to get discounted prices, don't fall into the timeshare trap. It isn't worth it to give up 1/2 a day to listen to a high pressure sales pitch.

Our kids would be happy just to hang out on the various beaches. We stay in Kihei so we spend a lot of time on the beaches there. We have been on the beaches when there are very few people there. There are some nice little tide pools to explore too. You can do some snorkeling right there. We also like to go down to Big Beach, but the surf there can be kind of rough. It is nice to take some breaks from the beach sometimes. We have a couple of all day beach days and then some 1/2 days on the beach.

You will be there during whale season. It is definitely worth paying to do a whale watch with Pacific Whale Foundation. We always have seen a lot of whales. The naturalists on board are great and during down times they do some great kids' programs. Sometimes we have even gone on 2-3 tours in a week because they are so fun.

The aquarium is right near Pacific Whale Foundation. It is a nice little aquarium that you can do in 1/2 a day.

We haven't been there yet, but we are planning to spend a day in Iao Valley State Park when we go next year. They have hiking, a nature center with displays for kids. I think you can swim near a waterfall too.

The Road to Hana is beautiful, but probably wouldn't be that exciting for a six year old. We did it on our honeymoon and were gone from sun up to after sun down. It was a really long day spent mostly riding in the car.

The drive up Haleakala is also beautiful, but is kind of a long drive. There are some places to stop on the way up, but is pretty much an all day trip. Biking down the volcano is not something you would want to do with a six year old. We were talking to a local who works in the ER. He said they have a huge number of people come into the ER because of accidents biking down the volcano. He said he would never do it just based on what he has seen come into the ER.

Personally, I would skip the Sugar Cane train.

Our kids loved wandering around the little outdoor market and the farmers market in Kihei. They tried fresh coconut juice and loved the shaved ice. Most of our souvenirs were purchased there.

Our kids also loved the Banyan Tree park in Lahaina. Across the street from there is Dan's Greenhouse where you can see their exotic birds and pot bellied pigs that they have. Lahaina has some pretty fancy art galleries and fancy jewelry stores. There are a few neat little shops, but we didn't really spend much time there with out kids. Too many "look don't touch" stores.

Our kids love the luaus too. We have gone to the Old Lahaina luau a couple of times. It is probably the more authentic luau, but not necessarily the best for kids. The Hyatt has a Drums of the Pacific luau that is a lot of fun. Kids are free. We have also been to the Royal Lahaina luau. They have a kids buffet with standard kids' fare if you have a picky eater.

We haven't been with our kids, but the 'Ulalena show is really well done. It might be a little boring for a six year old because it is in Hawaiian, but the costumes, dance, and drums are amazing.

Get the book Maui Revealed. It is one of the best guidebooks I've seen. Lots of info on restaurants and things off the beaten path. Also a lot about the culture of Maui. Be sure to get the most recent edition. The last time we went our edition was older and lots of the restaurants had closed.

Have a great time!!

Where are you staying? We stayed in Wailea and there is great snorkeling right off the beach. We rented a snorkeling vest and equipment for a flat amount for the week. I don't remember the cost, but i thought it was really reasonable. My son (6 at the time) got the hang of the equipment in the pool and then we would snorkel off the beach. There are lots of snorkel boat trips, but we found the free snorkeling off the beach to be better.

We also liked climbing the rocks at low tide to see the little creatures in the tide pools.

We also went to the top of the volcano to see sunrise - a typical tourist thing to do.

We took a tour of the lava tubes. You take a short hike in them and learn about how they were formed. Our kids and their cousins LOVED this. Besides the beach, it was a favorite activity for sure!
