We love this one .... http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/babies-kids/childrens-...
BJ's often has a coupon for it. I think we paid $25 for it.
I am looking to buy a new inexpensive ($0-$40) thermometer. Any suggestions?

I have the Exergen temporal thermometer too, and like it a lot. Easy to use an accurate.
The Braun ear thermometer I have is useless - never gives an accurate temp, and if you take your temp 3 times in a row, you'll get 3 completely different numbers that aren't even close to one another.
We are on our second Exergen temporal artery thermometer. We like them as long as they work, but I have noticed all of the different types of thermometers become unreliable as time passes.
I second the forehead thermometer Justwed linked to. We have one and love it!
We got ours at Costco and it was a really great price, less than the MSRP listed on the Consumer Reports page.
Here's the Costco link actually http://www.costco.com/Exergen-Temporal-Artery-Thermometer...
The birth center I had my third at started using them as well.
They are super easy and quick and worth the money.
I have a Vicks temporal one I think my mom paid $50 for it, but that was a couple of years ago...It still works great! and I love it. I would go for one of these because you dont' have to hold it in the mouth or ear for very long so sick kiddos tend to tolerate it more.
