hello all,

My son just turnned 19 months and has been using the nubby sippy cups with the straws as well as the playtex with the straw. I have been using these because he NEVER held his bottle or the regular sippy cup. Well I have to say I am so sick of the ones hes using now because the leak all over and are a bit hard to clean so I want to put him on a regular sippy cup and think at 19 months he should be more than capable of holding it on his own. Well i went out and got some and he still seems 'unable' to hold it right and he expected me to hold it for him (not gonna happen) how can i get him to hold it and drink properly? i feel he doesnt know how to hold it and i should've tackled this sooo long ago by teaching him to hold the bottle and not giving in so easily with holding it for him. any ideas? please help!

Why don't you try a sippy cup with handles first so he can feel for that first and get the idea. If that works, slowly move on. Maybe try a plastic coffee mug that has handles too. You'll be surprised how good he might actually be with a bigger cup then. My youngest will be 3 next month and thanks to her sisters, she caught on quickly (before I was ready!). A lot of times though I save the plastic cups from restaurants that have the lids and let her use those with straws because kids will be kids and do spill things and this makes things easier. Kids love straws! Just be patient and keep trying. You can also try using the kids juice box style first just to get him away from the sippy cup. Kids are thrilled with these too. Good luck.

Hi C.,my son is 14 months and he never learned to use a sippy cup. He likes to drink from a straw cup as well. I also had difficulty finding a cup that does not leak like the sippy cups. I recently found the Munchkin Cupsicle "My First Straw Cup" at Walmart for $4.50. It leaks occasionally from the straw when my son throws it to the floor but only a couple of drops. It has nice large handles for him to hold ontoand fun colors. I don't know if I would try to go back to a sippy cup as they say that type of cup could cause dental problems and possibly a lisp. Plus a straw cup would be the next step after a sippy cup. My son would not hold his bottle either. I knew he could but I think I made it too easy for him by holding it for him. I'm having trouble getting him off his night time bottle and recenlty put handles on his bottle and just let go when he was drinking and he grabbed on and now does it himself. I've given him sippy cups to try in the past but he hasn't gotten the concept of tipping the cup since he can just tilt his head down for the straw cups....? Not sure if the straw cups your using have handles but that might be the answer.Hope I was able to help. Good luck.

You have already gotten some good advice so I won't repeat it, but also you could try learning through imitation. Toddler LOVE to emulate their parents, my 14 month old will walk around with a phone holding it to her ear and saying "hi"(so cute). So maybe you could get a sippy cup of your own and drink from it in front of him or bring him around other children who are using sippy cups. There is a good chance he will emulate them. And most importantly don't lift it for him! I know its hard not to and don't let him get too frustrated(that's really bad too). I know I can never let my daughter cry, but when you see them finally figure it out, its priceless!

I would just let him try and figure it out in his own. Maybe you can get a water bottle with a sport top for yourself and drink out of it so that he can mimic you? I think my daughter used the sippy's with the straws until she was almost 2 and then just changed her mind and decided she wanted the real cups...

C.,

There are sippy cups i think its by Playtex that have handles
specially made for the new child learning how to hold a cup. this might help him out. For the first few times make sure you help me and put his favorite drink or juice in it. Bring the cup towards him so the drink can spill out. It takes time but he will be able to do this. Another thought is while you are watching him let him drink out of a big cup (of course you need to hold this one) But maybe he'll get the concept that there is juice in the cup. Only one concern, is he able to hold other things a regular cup or a toy with two hands the same way a cup is held. If not I would mention it to the doctor. Good Luck! S. C
