Texas State Fair - Fort Worth,TX

We are planning to take our 2 kids (age 4 and 23 months) to the Texas State Fair on Friday.
Does anyone know of anyplace to get discount tickets?
Also, does anyone have suggestions for "can't miss" shows activities for the pre-school set.

Also, I bet my son would love to wear his Woody costume and dress like a "cowboy".
Would that be appropriate or weird since it's a costume and not authentic western wear?
We haven't been since we had kids, so not sure what is best.

Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice.
We got our McDonald's coupons and used them! They even let us use the $4 off and the free child together.
We LOVED the helping hands farm & petting zoo.
Chevrolet has this Powerwheels drive area that was great for the preschool set.
The dog show, dive show, & acrobats were also excellent.
The only disappointment was our fair food was icky!
We had a great day!

The petting zoo is always good. My kids have always like the dog shows and the pig races. There is a really cute farming area where they get to plant fake food, milk fake cows, and see the whole process of how crops, milk, and wool end up being in stores. It's educational and fun. I think it's called LIttle Hands Farm or something.

There was State Fair supplement in the Dallas Morning News Friday that had just about everything you're asking. Maybe the library still has it. I would give thumbs-up to the Woody costume.

I haven't been in a few years, so not sure what shows they have now. My family's favorite has always been the Birds of Prey. Try to sit down close to the front so the kids can really see the birds. We also like the dog shows and of course, you must do the petting zoo.

It's been a few years since I've been, but the Little Hands Farm is great for preschoolers. It lets them go from collecting eggs and planting seeds to picking vegetables, "driving" a tractor and selling their produce. Good way to see all the steps a farmer goes through and my girls both loved it. We also like the Bird of Prey show and the collies herding animals.

Cheap days are fridays, if you don't mind the crowds. half price admission and rides after 5pm. Go to www.1061kissfm.com and print out the "fridays at the fair" coupon. The coupon explains how it works. The half price deal does not apply to Thrillway Rides or the Texas Star.

Thank-you for asking! I was just looking myself.

I totally approve of the Woody costume too. Wouldn't it be great to be a kid again and just not care what anyone thinks?

Thanks for this question. I needed the discount info, too. Go for the Woody costume. When my son was 4 he wanted me to make him a Robin Hood costume. He wore that thing EVERYWHERE.

Check your local McDonald's for discount coupons. I picked up coupons for $4 off adult and a free child (under 48") with the purchase of an adult ticket, at a McDonald's in McKinney.

i'm not sure about texas, but for the MO state fair, it was on the website where you could pick up discount tickets (like O'Reilly Auto Parts or Dillons or whatever.)

And I doubt anyone would look at your kid funny for dressing like Woody. My kid dressed like a fairy for the Kansas and MO state fairs (she doesnt get that it's not the same as ren fest, and she looks so cute we dont care!).

i think i saw a couple great deals, but they were during the week. I saw $2.00 Wednesdays if you bring in 3 cans for a food bank or 4.00 Thursdays with a 20oz coke product bottle. As a side note...this weekend is TX/OU so it will be packed. i am hoping to go during the week this wee on a cheaper day.

I get on their website and email the PR office every year and they send me a list of discounts. Was about to post it but see that it is the same thing that Rebecca posted. Have fun, it is a tradition we cherish at our house!

If you google Frugal In Fort Worth you can see discounts. I think dressing like Woody would be super cool since it's close to Halloween and noone will bat a lash - he wont be the most outlandish character by any means! I hear the fried Beer is the big thing this year. If you go to the State Fair website you can see a list of sceduled events and concerts.

I didn't read all your responses, but I second the "helping hands farm" for young kids. My kids always like the Kroger bird show as well. I have gotten discount tickets at Kroger in the past. Also, go to the website for the state fair and they have a listing of all shows, the times, and a description of each one. That's what I've done in the past to plan our trip. I think a little boy in a woody costume would be cute. I've not observed a lot of people dressed up in the past so if he would notice and get self-conscious then you could just pack an extra set of clothes if he wants to change.
