Terrible Temper Tantrums

My daughter just turned one and I think she's already entering the "terrible 2's". when she doesnt' get what she wants, or gets frustrated with somethign she throws these horrible temper tantrums. She throws herself on the ground and screams and cries, kicking and screaming and she has started banging her head on the ground. They are horrible to watch and I'm scared she may hurt herself banging her head. I know she is only doing this because she doesn't know how to communicate what she is feeling, but I don't know how to handle these episodes. Generally I just walk away from them, try not to reiinforce the behavior, but i'm not sure this is the best idea. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this? I'm really nervous that this is the pre-cursor to having an out of control child.

You should try teaching yourself and her a couple of basic signs so that she can communicate basic needs to you without throwing a fit. A good place to learn a few of them is
www.mybabycantalk.com and http://www.aslpro.com/cgi-bin/aslpro/aslpro The second is better for things like thirsty, eat, more, etc. This helps my son of almost two, who has been signing since about 1. Good luck! It is so rewarding and fun, and it is like you have your own little code! And don't worry about what they say about kids who sign, because my son now says the word he is signing simultaneously. Have fun!

My son just turned one a few weeks ago and he has been doing this same exact thing. I'm glad to see it's not unusual! He throws little tantrums and bangs his head on everything - even smacks himself in the head with his sippy cup when he's frustrated. It seems like he always does it when he's trying to tell us something though - if he's hungry or tired particularly. It's a lot of trial and error (but isn't most of parenting?) but I'm afraid of giving him even negative attention and unwittingly reinforcing this behavior - I guess the only comfort I can offer is that you're not alone - If you find anything that works, please let me know and I will do the same! Hang in there!

Oh how I remember this. Kadin is only about to be 18 months...and when he hit about 11 months what you are describing started. I discovered it was frustration...and as soon as I started distracting him from the obvious and the behavior without answering it he stopped. I think they get frustrated because they cannot talk...so I would provide him with another activity and if it didn't work I would simply take a favorite go into the other room and start playing with it by myself and eventually (a few minutes later) he would come in wiping tears and start playing...be patient...I know its hard...I'm a single mom too and we never get a break...but it gets better so hang in there and remember she needs you...and you are being the best mom you can be and that is what matters!
