Do any moms have any suggestions on teething for my son. He is about to get his first tooth (doctor says it is coming in the next week or so) and he got a viral infection on top of it. He has never in his life been sick, so it has been very overwhelming for my husband and I to see him suffer and watch him cry. We know it is that much harder on him. He did not sleep hardly last night and this morning we got up and went to the doctor. He gave him some numbing agent for his ears and told me to rub some on his gums. It has seemed to help a little, he is sacked out right now! I am giving him tylenol and motrin as ordered, but wondered if any moms out there have any suggestions. HE JUST SEEMS MISERABLE!
I know what you are going through. My son just got his first two within a day and a half of each other. Teething tablets helped in the early stages of teething but stopped helping once his teeth got closer. My son hates cold wash clothes! I did a little research and someone recommended using frozen waffles. I think I am going to try it. It seems to get better with each tooth! : )
HI K. Hylands teething tablets were a blessing for us. They are homeopathic but you can get them at walgreens target etc they come in a blue whit e pink packaging and you can also order them online. They dissolve quickly you can use them in conjunction with other medicine tylenol etc and we used them around the clock even when our kids were sleeping we would go in and slip them in on their gum and they dissolve so quickly they just swallowed with their spit and never woke up. I hated teething poor little ones.

There are little yellow tablets, I think they are called teething tablets you can give him at night that I have been told work really well(they help them sleep through it). My son is 9mth and only has 2 bottom teeth and he really didnt have much pain with it. I have found though that he really loves chewing on cold wet wash cloths (which you could wrap a piece of ice in too to help numb his gums) and a teether that vibrates. It is a blue rattle (handle) with a yellow (rubber) star on the top that vibrates when he bites down. He has that in his hands at ALL times---almost never puts it down---and it's supposed to last for at least 4mths or they will send you a new one in the mail. The doctor told us that their ears hurt while they are teething from the pressure (and i've noticed that he grabs his alot) so we have ear drops (numbing - used for ear infections) that help when it seems like it's his ears are hurting. I am in agreement with the Hylands Teething tablets. The first 2 days it was like my son hadn't slept in a week and needed to catch up. He slept all night, about 6 hours the next day and went to bed again at 7pm. His teething has gotten so bad as trying to bite the tile floor or wooden furniture (we had 4 top teeth coming in at the same time)! My son HATED oragel, it is a very odd sensation on top of a painful one! Frozen wet washclothes help for about 5 minutes. Hang in there...there will be more to come unfortunately!
I have also used the teething tablets, tylenol, teething rings, etc. I just wanted to suggest one thing I did do was use the mesh self-feeding things that you put food in and close so they can't choke. Hope you can figure that one out. I put frozen fruit or just ice cubes in it and let my daughter chomp on it as a snack. That gave me time and numbed her gums, plus frozen stuff is so hard that it gave enough pressure for her. Motrin has also been our friend during the bad days.
Get him some teething tablets from Wal-Mart or Kroger. They are Highlands Teething Tablets and they are awesome! Matthew began drooling at 3 months, so I knew we were in for some tough times with the teeth. Someone else told me about them and they became my magic pills! I would start out with about 3 to 5 and then you can give them up to 4 to 6 times a day. They are completely safe (called Poison Control) and they just take the edge off some they can rest and REST is what I needed!!
I highly recommend them and have had friends come by my house to get some when their kids were going through the same thing!! The oragel and other things were terrible, the teething tablets melt instantly when they are on the tongue, so no harm!
Great tablets and I had them all over the house, diaper bag, pac & play, my purse so I wouldn't have to search for them when I needed them!!

We used Zylactin ( sp ) when my daughter was teething and it worked great. They come in individual swabs too, so it's easy to apply. I think we got them at Walgreens. A cold wet washcloth for her to chew on always helped us too.
My daughter is 8 months old. She already has 3 teeth and she's getting 2 more at the same time. I do not like to give her medicine for anything unless she absolutely needs it. For example, she had RSV and was given medication. However, the past couple nights she has not been sleeping well either. I put some baby oragel on her gums, which she totally hated, and have her tylenol. It helped.
Poor baby! Our twins had a horrible time and our pediatrician prescribed eardrops! We put them in their ears or on their gums and they stopped crying within a minute! We had our pediatrician prescribe some before our son even started teething and used them on him (even put the drops on his pacie) and he was calm instantly.
gripe water may help...best one i've found is Childrens Gripe Water for Colic by Wellments which i get online at http://www.americarx.com they have the best price about $6/bottle which is 4oz--a dose is 1/2 tsp

As amother of a 2 yr old and a profession in the childcare busniess, I can tell you that teething tablets and orgel work for about 2 mins. As soon as the baby's siliva rinses his mouth it stops working. Try putting ice cold water into his mouth with a straw or let him bite on a cold teething ring. Tylenol is the best for pain and to help them sleep. Give it to him around the clock. Don't wait till he starts crying. It takes awhile for the meds to kick in. You don't want him to be in pain and crying for a hour. When you see his gums bulging and swell up he will have another tooth trying to come through. If he is just now getting a tooth, you've got a long ways to go. My daughter just finished with her last set of 2 yr old molors. I also gave my daughter a plain strip of beef jerky to chew on. It won't him. In fact the salt from the beef will help to sooth. Salt is used on meet to tenderize it, it works the same way for the gums. Just make sure it doesn't have pepper in it.
