Teething, Like, Right This Second.

My son is not even 4 months old yet, and the poor guy has a tooth that is breaking through. I guess because my other kids were older when they cut teeth, they handled the pain a bit better. Any thoughts on how to help this little man out? I'm giving him all the love in the world, as well as all my old tricks... cold juice (well, 90% water with a splash of juice in a sippy cup, he's too young for juice-juice), cold teething rings, counterpressure, a teeny bit of tylenol... I don't want to use teething tablets because I'm unfamiliar with them and I'm confident he's too young for them... and I never really used baby orajel on my other kids. Any natural remedies to this? He's not a happy meatball right now :(

What can I do next?

I actually would use frozen waffles lol. I got it off an episode of Roseanne and it worked. We also use freezy pops. Just let them chew until it melted and then got a new one. It's worth a shot.

knawing on a frozen washcloth, is what worked well for my kids.
I just dampen it a little bit, then put it in freezer. Then when frozen my kids as babies liked to knaw on it.

Do not use numbing gels, because this numbs the throat as well, and that is not good and can cause a baby to choke on their tongue etc.
That is what our Pediatrician said.

all the best,
Susan

Do the teething tablets. He's not too young. My daughter also teethed at 4 months. Continue with the tylenol, and the tablets are all natural. They will not hurt him!

The Hyland teething tablets are all natural.
A frozen baby wash (wet and then frozen) may also help.
Otherwise all your Doctor for suggestions. Yu sound like you are doing everything possible.

I used Melaleuca Oil, or frozen fruit, both work great and the Melaleuca OIl last for a long time. Find an Herbal shop near your house, they should have some, or you could e-mail me and I could help you figure somehtngs out.

Hi,
my kids were late teethers but one natural teething tablet made by Hylands, has always helped them, they immediately dissolve and can be used in a child at any age! I use Homeopathie with my kids and there are quite a few remedies, that help really well. If you have a local nature store, they can usually help you with this. There are homeopathic pellets (the ones in the US are quite big, (I use the german ones)but you can just crush them to powder and give your child the powder. My pediatrician always recommended to stick my finger in liquid benadryl and rub it over her gums, because the itching drives them crazy, but I am not sure that helped !
let me know if you want more detailed info on the homeopathic treatments, I can look it up in my book !
good luck !

I'll watch your answers we're in the same boat. Our guy is drooling, has a rash all over his chin, cheeks, etc. and hasn't been napping well either. Uggh. I wish I could help him. I just gave him Tylenol and put him down for another nap with a vaseline like ointment all over his face.

I'm sure you know this, but he is too young for motrin and food. I saw a lot of your responses seemed like they would only be better for older babies. My mother used the frozen washcloth trick for all her kids. Unfortunately mine wouldn't use anything, so we just had to suffer through it and let him chew on our fingers, that was all he would use. But I know a lot of people who swear by the frozen washcloth.

In addition to the over-numbing effect of orajel, it actually makes gums tougher so it is harder for the teeth to push through. You are doing good by not doing the orajel.

As for the teething tablets, surprisingly this is one of those debates you wouldn't expect. I chose not to use them based on my pediatrician's advice as well as a couple of other doctors too. I know people swear homeopathic is safe and natural and it probably is, but I chose not to use something that doesn't have to go through FDA approval. I know the FDA doesn't magically make everything safe. But I know of several moms who say they took an adult dose of the teething tablets and felt like they had a major caffeine buzz, or worse. I think they are like everything and some people have bad reactions to them, so we didn't use them. Just some additional information for you to consider. I am sure the majority of the advice you are going to get will be to use them, and it's totally your choice, but I thought I'd tell you what my doc said about them. I hope you are able to find something that helps your poor baby. (And I love the meatball nickname, too cute! :)

Hey R. -

Mine cut their teeth very early too and we used teething tablets and a tiny bit of infant's ibuprofen.

I have 2 tablets and about 1/4 mL. of infants ibuprofen and it worked wonders.

I wouldn't do the baby orajel. Our pediatrician says they swallow more than they get on their gums and in the end it just numbs various random parts of the mouth/throat and frustrates them.

Good luck! Poor guy! :(

My little one teethed young too and was a hot mess. He liked cold wet rags and a tooth brush to chew on. Other than that he was not happy unless he was being held 24/7.

We used the net-things with frozen blueberries or peas in them. We also used (no joke) rib bones. We fully cooked some beef ribs, had them for dinner and then gave them to the kids. They lurved them.
