So i asked my doctor if my 6.5 month old could have a fever from teething, and he said no... However, i dont really think that entirely true... my first had mild fevers with teething, and now i'm thinking may be it was just a virus, and a timing coinsidence... any thoughts??? my little one is running 100 and i'm positive she's teething, but is a fever associated with that or just a cold????

My sister is a doctor and she said that it can't be proven medically but as most moms say-and she is a mom of three- that her kids ran fevers when teething. When my child is sick I can tell. When she is teething and has a fever I just give her tylenol. Doctors are great- my mom is one and my dad was a pediatrician- but I have learned that my instinct as a mother is good too!

My daughter also gets mild fevers and diarrhea when teething. But since it is cold/flu season, it could also be a coincidence so keep an eye on it.

Our Pedi said the same thing...but, I swear my son got mild fevers when he was teething. Technically, a 'fever' is only associated with infections and is a warning that the body is fighting something big off. So, I say 'yes' but most medical providers will tell you 'no'.

Good Luck!

If you look in any medical book on teething it is common to get fevers while teething. Not considered normal, but nor is spotting while pregnant. When teething begins there is constant inflammation around the gums---a process called the inflammatory response can cause a fever--low grade only. If fevers go great than 101.0 it is not a teething fever. I have resources if you would like them.

It is a myth that teething causes fevers. In Victorian times, 10% of infant deaths were attributed to teething.

Babies spend a lot of time teething. They also get lots of viruses. Often, these happen to coincide, but they're not related.

If she has a fever, she's ill. She may well be teething, but it's unrelated.

Hello H.. Everything I've read says that teething does not CAUSE fevers, however, sometimes fevers are associated with teething. I hope this helps :)

My 10 Year old still gets fevers whenever a new tooth comes in... Once the tooth has completely broken the surface of the gums then the fever goes away. She's always been like that. She had 5 teeth come in this summer alone.

My son always has/had low grade fevers when he is teething. Tempuratures vary depending on where you take the temp. (ie. armpit, mouth, ear etc) but if the temp gets much higher then 100 it is probably a virus or something. Either way some Tylenol might help your little one feel better.

Of course your little one could be sick, but for what it's worth my son always got fevers when teething. Once it even got up to 102 - I brought him to the doctor's, since Dr. Sears' website (www.askdrsears.com) said that a teething fever shouldn't go above 101. However, my son's pediatrician confirmed that he wasn't sick, just teething. Sure enough, a day or so later it was gone.

Best of luck!

He is right and wrong. When they are teething, their little resistance is down/low and they end up getting sick. So, the teeth themselves don't get them sick, but because of it, they get sick...so YES, teething gets them sick! My little girl had croup cough EVERY single time a tooth came in and never without a tooth...and hasn't had it since all her teeth come in. Basically, teething STINKS!

Many kids do seem to get fevers when they are teething. I guess I can't say what is medically causing the fevers, but they do frequently coincide with teething. I would not worry unless the fever is really high. 100 doesn't sound like anything to worry about unless there are other weird symptoms associated with it.

A fever is a sign of an infection... so unless your little one has an infection some place in the body (possibly the gums) then there would be no fever. My son never ran a fever when teething.

Well, first of all, 100 degrees in a child that age is not considered a fever. 101 is, but not 100 (married a doc and he always is telling me it is just an "elevated temperature" and nothing to worry about in my kids). Kids can get elevated temps for any number of reasons. My 18 month old son had a temp off 100.1 when he sleeps every night, while during the day it is "normal" at 98.8 degrees. That isn't a fever that is his sleeping temp. Stress can make little kids temp elevate as well and teething can be stressful. I wouldn't worry. And it is unlikely your little one is even sick.

Fevers can be associated with teething, in fact it's quite common. I would be looking for a doctor who knew a bit more than this one apparently does. Every mom I know has told me that their child had at least one fever during a teething episode and my daughter had fevers when she first started getting teeth.
Fevers can be associated with a lot of things though. Try a little children's tylenol *like the first line on the dropper since he/she's so young* and a lukewarm bath. If the fever persists definitely get her/him back in to see the doctor. Or if you don't think the doctor will take this seriously take him/her to an urgent care center.

Hi H.

I remember when my son was teething he would run a fever. If I am not wrong I think that is a pretty common experience. Check with another doctor or do a google search for "teething +fever".

Take care,

Hello, The way this was explained to me when my grown children were little was that although the actual teething does not make babies sick or run fevers, they are more likely to get other illnesses and viruses because their resistance is low.
Good luck with your precious little baby.

My son consistantly had fevers (101-101.5) when he was teething and so did I (and so did my 2 brothers). I had a doctor that told me that was not possible, but I decided that it was for our family.
