Teething - Charlotte,NC

Is there any way to tell when your baby is teething? My son is only 4 months old and I know that it is a bit early to be teething but he has been "extra" fussy for the last ten days and we have ruled out an ear infection. I can feel his teeth behind the gums but no teeth seem to be poking out further than the others. If I give him the opportunity to suck on my hands, he will basically chew on my knuckles and I think that it feels good to him. He has never been a great sleeper but the last few weeks have been terrible and he sometimes wakes up every two hours and the only thing I can do to soothe him is nurse him Previously, he was either sleeping completely through the night (11-12 hours) or for at least 8 hour stretches at a time. He just seems really uncomfortable and I don't know why.

The other classic signs of teething are missing: diarrhea, temperature, swollen gums. I just wonder if that could still be what is bothering him and if anyone has tips.

What can I do next?

My children starting teething early. According to my mother I started early as well. I personally don't like orajel. That's just me! What I found to work was fresh grounded clover! rub the clover on the baby's gums and that should help with the discomfort.
Best Wishes!

Hi K.! I can definitely understand where you are coming from. I have a 6mos. old who cut her 2 bottom teeth at 5 1/2 months (finally!) She started exhibiting signs of teething at 4mos. (ie drooling, on and off fussiness, and escessive chewing.) I did have my first daughter cut her teeth at 4mos. so it is possible that he is getting them soon. I have never used anything on their gums other than water filled teething rings and wet washclothes, which they love to chew on. Good luck and just keep in mind that this too shall pass :-)

My daughter got her first 2 teeth at 4 months. the rest did not follow until almost 9 months later. She did not have any of the classic symptoms but I could feel the teeth. I used baby orajel. That actuall works pretty good. She also just liked "chewing" on a bottle nipple, teething ring, etc. Probably teething.

K.,

My son got his first two teeth in at 4 months. And then he didn't start getting anymore teeth in until he was a year old. It is possible that he could be teething. I honestly don't recall if he went through other normal signs of teething other than just a lot of drooling and wanting to bite on things more frequently. Good luck. It doesn't sound like anything too serious.

My son started teething at four months and now it seems like my daughter is, too-so it happens. Lots of drooling and crankiness-sometimes a fever are the only tip offs we got with either one. Tylenol and cold teethers worked wonders.

Just give him some tylenol and wait 30 min. if he is no longer fussy it is probably the teeth! Get him some frozen teething rings too and save your knuckles!

you could be at this for a long time. my son who is 8+ months old is still teething and has been since about 4 months old. i feel and see the buds but no teeth yet. He could also be going through a growth spurt and needing the extra feedings. But like the others said, teethers, cold rags, fingers, tylenol all are good. It will hopefully pass and you can get some sleep again!

My son had 4 teeth by 5 months so although it is unusual to get them that early some babies do. I'm not positive but I think it is hereditary so ask when you are your husband starting getting teeth. Try giving him some infant tylenol or motrin to see if that helps, it helps my son. They also make oragel swabs (they look like cutips) that are wonderful. The regular gel works fine now while they dont have many teeth but after they get several you wont want to stick your figures in there. Hang in there, mine is getting 8 at one time right now!

Perfectly normal, some babies have teeth at 4 months, my brother did. I've heard teeth coming in earlier than that too. Give him lots of things to chew on, cooled teething rings, a pacifier, nursing any of that is good. You can try a little children's tylenol, but CALL YOUR DR FIRST and make sure what dose to give him, it's based on his weight. My kids did this, and my son still does this and at 9 months, we still don't have teeth, you can see them and feel them, but their not there yet. You don't have to have all the other classic signs of teething to be teething. Don't worry unless it continues for a long period of time, just keeping trying different things to comfort him. Their only young once, and at this point bonding with him and being there for him is what matters the most!! good luck!

Hi K.~
Babies can teethe months before the little white tooth pops through. Mostly you'll see drooling. You can give your LO a cold cloth to bite on, that helped my LO. A few times I gave him a teeny tiny bit of gum medicine especially at bedtime. If that doesn't work maybe try some tylenol, but call the MD before that to see if there are any other "home" treatments. Good luck!

Hi K.- My son just turned 4 months old, and he is clearly teething also. He chews on his own hands or mine constantly. Sometimes he is a little fussy, especially at night. We give him homeopathic teething tablets when he seems to need a little pain relief, often before bedtime. He doesn't have a fever, diarrhea, or swollen gums either. As far as the sleeping goes, he has always woken up once or twice a night to nurse, so I haven't noticed any changes there. I sleep with him in the bed with me, and nurse him lying down when he is hungry. That way neither of us has to fully wake up. Good luck!

It definitely sounds like teething. My son got his teeth early too. The best thing on the market I found was Gentle Naturals Teething Drops. You can get them at most Meijer, Target and BAbies R Us. It has a picture of Pooh Bear chewing on Eyeore's ear. I may have gotten the name wrong, but the picture will tell you it's the right one. Check with your doctor to make sure he's old enough for them, but you just put half a dropper full under his tongue. It works like a charm and you don't have to worry about it washing away from the extra saliva like you do with topical medicines. Motrin and Tylenol are good for pain (can't remember at what age they can start taking Motrin - check with your doctor). Good luck.

if he takes a paci or a bottle chill them and give it to him to gnaw on. With dd I would put just enough water in teh nipple of her bottle, turn it upside down and freeze it. Then when she was about 6 mths I got a mesh feeder and started putting her frozen baby food in it and that was awesome, that and giving her icee pops (the ones that are just water with coloring). The teething tablets worked for a bit and giving her tylenol helped her sleep when it was really bad. she had her first tooth at 4 mths soit's not too early

That sounds very much like teething to me and four months is a very normal time for him to start. Both of my kids got teeth at four months. If he seems otherwise healthy and he it mostly just fussiness and waking, try helping him assuming he is teething and see if he responds well. Good luck!

All my children cut their teeth at around 3 months, so he's not too young. He sounds like he has a great deal of the symptoms of teething, swollen gums, sleep disruption, chewing on your fingers. And don't let any doctor tell you that fever and diarrhea are not typical of teething...they so are! All my kids did that when they teethed & it was nothing else but that. As soon as the teeth abrupt he'll feel so much better. One thing my children loved to chew on...a wet rag.

My son got his first tooth at 3 months and his second a week later. It is not too early. They say it has a lot to do with genetics. I got teeth early as a baby as well. Did you or the father? It sounds like teething to me. Let him chew on different things and maybe at night give him the infant tylenol to help with the pain.

Both of my kids cried in the night when they were teething, sometimes even shrieking...and when the tooth popped through, they slept through the night again. They didn't have any of those other symptoms either. Just gotta live through it. Sounds like it's teething since gnawing on your knuckles seems to soothe him. Since he's so young, try holding one of those teething rings that you can freeze, and let him gnaw on that as you hold it, and just give him extra TLC. Possibly he can sleep on your shoulder as you rock him when he wakes during the night. I spent many nights like that! Good luck.

4 months is young but both of my boys were teething by that age. My boys are 18 & 28 now :) , now I have 2 grandsons 1 & 3; but they started teething later. Whatever is out there for teething now; the numbing gel should help some. Some babies get teeth quick and some slow. Just keep plenty of things for him to chew on safely (some teethers you put in the frig and the coldness feels good to their gums) and use the teething gel. Also, get Dad or a grandparent or a friend or a babysitter to help out, so you can get some sleep. We started overnight babysitting the grandbabies at 2 weeks with the the first one and around 2 months with the second. Just get someone to help you out even if its just a night every other week to give you time to sleep :) Our daughter is also one who does not do well after losing sleep. So we try and help out all we can when we are off. Hope this helps! ~T.~/ Nana :)

My son had a hard time teething as well. I used the homeopathic teething tablets and alternated with the night time orajel. The problem with teething is that they come up and receed back down many times before you actually see them. I also staggared motrin and tylenol at night when i just couldn't calm him down. Please watch all of the "frozen" ideas. I have heard that little ones are quick to get frostbite in their mouths. good luck!

Sounds like he's definitely teething. A cold teething ring used to work for my son. Or any hard plastic surface. If it's really bad, check with your pediatrician on how much baby tylenol you can give him - that always worked for my son.

Sounds like teething to me. My son's first bottom tooth appeared on his 4 month birthday and the second followed a day or two later. It could hurt them well before then though because the tooth is making it's way up through the gum. After it breaks through, I think the worst is over. Drooling alot is a tell tale sign. I would try giving him cold wash cloths to chew on or cold teethers and a although the Baby Orajel is great to use, a Pediatrician told me once that Vanilla extract works extremely well also and you don't have to worry about using too much. It numbs their gums also, I guess because it contains alcohol. Good luck! T.

Hi
You may have had tons of responses so far, but here is mine!
I am always way behind on my emails due to my lovely 7 mth old. I also don't do well with little to no sleep, it does get better.
Ok, the teeth. My little one started acting like he was teething at 4 mths. At his 4 month check up they told me that he was too young and he probably was just not feeling well. Two days after that appt. he got his first tooth, then the next week he got his second tooth. Now at 7 mths he has 8 teeth. Not many people I have talked with has experienced this. My little one is fussy when they are about to pop through, he has never done the "common" things, he drools alot , chews on everything and tends to be more clingy to me then any other times, he also wanted to nurse all the time when he was 4mth, he now at 7 mths rarely wants to except if he awakens int he middle of the night. So I have been pumping for some time now. Good luck!!!

Even though his teeth aren't pokin ghtrough yet, they may be moving and pushing and that still can be irritating to an infant who doesn'tknow what's happening to him.

We found these great teethers....they are called "Mesh feeders" It's a little mesh bag with a handle and we put frozen apples in it (your son may be too young for that so check with the Ped.) but that way he was getting some nutrients and the cold hard apple felt good on his gums. Also a wet, frozen washcloth is nice to chew on and sooths and numbs the gums...

My mother rubed whiskey on my gums :) we were on a plane to Mass. when I started teething :) I think the flight attendant was just trying to shut me up :)

In walmart in the vitamin section (close to the airborne) there is something called Hyland's teething tablets. THESE ARE WONDERFUL!!!!!

They are little powdered sugar tablets that are medicated to help with teething. I have used them for all three of my kids. They work better on some kids than others. But I also carry them in my purse, diaper bag and by the side of the bed. They can be used up to ten times in a day and can be used just a few minutes after the last dose.

the difference between this and tylonal is that tylonal is on a 4hr. timed redose. in this you can give it again when the symptoms come back. So it could be 8 hours later or 8 minutes later.

(we also use them for temper tantrums, when we are beyond figuring out how to get them to stop, It has chamomile in it and so it calms them down)

From one mom to another!
