I feel for you. Both my kids were teething at 4 months and had a hard time. Their favorite teether was a frozen washcloth I kept in the freezer. When they got a little bigger and started eating solids, they really liked a Safer Feeder (mesh bag on a stick) filled with frozen fruit pieces (grapes, watermelon, blueberries, etc.). Another favorite teether of ours is a wiggle jiggler (fiddle jiggler?). It's a vibrating animal on a stick that they can chew on. I know amazon sells them.
I would advise you to stay away from the Hyland's teething tablets. They are actually dangerous because they contain a drug (belladona) that is not well-controlled. They were just recalled because babies were overdosing on it!!!
One thing I have reccently heard of and am thinking of buying is an amber teething necklace. You can find them on ebay and amazon and other websites (www.inspiredbyfinn). They look really interesting and if my daughter wasn't already 16 months I would absolutely have bought one. The amber beads are not to chew on, but when worn next to the skin release some natural pain-relieving chemicals. Some of these types of natural products are shams, but these actually get really good reviews by parents who have used them. I might still break down and get one.
Good luck, and remember, this too will pass!
I agree...we need more info! what have you tried so we can give you other options.
we always had good luck with tylenol before bed.
and it's NOT to early to be teething, many children have teething/gum pain for weeks or months before their teeth come through...cold wash cloths (partially frozen), teethers, rub the gums with your finger, orajel, teething pacifiers, or just a pacifier (keep a couple in the fridge)
I had fantastic results with the homeopathic tablets that you can buy from nearly any grocery store. They dissolve in babies mouth.
I did not have luck with orajel. I tried and tried, all it seemed to do was tick my kids off and wear off fast.
4 months is pretty young to be teething, my nephew went through a rough patch around 4 months too and his parents insisted he was teething... he's 7 months now and still doesn't have teeth. (Its normal for the gums to be hard, look white, etc..) It could just be changes in his sleeping pattern. You might want to consider other options. Is he getting hungry at night, possibly? A growth spurt? etc.
Good luck!
Give him a cold, wet wash cloth to chew on and some tylenol for the discomfort. Have you tried teething rings/books/toys? My Ped. always told me to stay away from Anbesol due to the high sugar content. What about rubbing his gums for him with your finger?
