Hi moms! I was wondering if my son's sleep & behavioral issues could be due to him cutting new teeth. He's 11 mos. He cut 6 teeth within a matter of about two weeks at 4 mos old. I'm wondering if he could be getting more in. He had real high temps (103-104) about a week ago with cough, runny nose and lymph nodes hardened. We took him in and they diagnosed him with an upper resp infection. Said to just alt ty and motrin. At that time he had just gotten back to his sleep pattern from being sick (throwing up) at Christmas time. When he had the high temps last weekend he was lethargic all day and up inconsolable through the night. Through it all he's had a clear runny nose. He doesn't have the fevers anymore, but now he's only sleeping about 2-3 hours and then wakes up and will scream if we try to put him back to bed or pat him. He wants to be held or wants a bottle (formula or water); we used to be able to turn him over and pat him or hold him for a few and he'd go back to sleep. He's so crabby through the day and throwing tantrums (at 11 mos old!) I just don't know what to do. My daughter is 6 and I don't remember this. I thought Breastfed babies weren't supposed to get sick as often; he's already been sick more than my daughter and I nursed him a month longer...

What can I do next?

Teething does not cause high temps. High temps are usually caused by some kind of virus. I would take him back to the the Doctor and see what they say if he is still running a high temperature. My sisters son was very cranky like that as well and he had bilateral ear infections. Good Luck!

I would call your dr. Maybe try some methods you use to sooth him while he's teething to see if that helps.

from my experience, i am of the opinion that teething doesn't actually cause the fever, but it seems to lower their immune systems and i think they're more suceptible to whatever bug might be going around. i am a huge fan of infant tylenol, my son was born in the fall and his first winter we probably went through five or six doctors' visits, due to colds, ear infections, even pneumonia. the tylenol lowers the fever and for what it's worth, my son was always able to sleep at least a few hours after taking it. not to say just drug him up, but your dr. can probably tell you, if he's in obvious discomfort and has a fever it can't hurt.

My vote is on the ear infection. I would get a second opinion from the Dr. you saw before (and not another in the same practice either). My son was dianosed with fluid on his ears from a speech therapist after we moved when he was 2...yet all the while, his pedictrician never said he had any problems...duh! If he's wailing and screaming, it isn't over a tooth coming in...that's been my experience.

Sounds to me that the runny nose may have caused an ear infection. My youngest always starts out with a cold or other illness and if her nose is runny it always ends up being an ear infection. The sure sign for us is the sleepless nights. I would take him back to the doctor and have them check his ears again.
