Hi moms! So my 9 month old son has just sprouted his third and fourth teeth :) He has two alomost completely in on the bottom front and the top front have finally broke through and he has begun to sleep better at night(yay!). So now for the down side, he's started grinding his top and bottom teeth together. I'm sure it is only because they are new and he is exploring every little part of his new world, but I'm so worried he is going to cause damage to his tiny chompers! Any moms have experience with this?? i try my best to rush in and stop him as soon as I hear that awful sound and give him a teether instead, it doesn't seem to be lessening his urge though. please help!! Thanks all!

So What Happened?

Thanks moms! Though I'm still cringing, I feel a lot better knowing that this soon will pass. My dentist didn't seem too worried by this either, so it's another thing to add to the "they didn't tell me about this" new mom handbook I've been compiling for my expectant friends...

Its just a phase, ignore it, it will stop as quickly as it started. He wont do any damage, I think most babies do this for a time.

My youngest is a grinder and our dentist said just let her rip. She did some damage to her teeth, but that, said the dentist, is par for the course. Her adult teeth are the important one. Talk to your dentist, but it seems like nothing to worry too much about.

I know that I was still grinding my teeth when I was 6 years old... my dad told me I outgrew it around 6.5-7 years old... but I have no lasting damage from it.

No need to worry-my 16 month old still does this occasionally since she just got 4 molars. Its exploration. It will disappear after he gets used to the teeth. My daughter did a lot at that age, so it will be fine :)

My 9 month old does this too! It freaks me out as well! I'm not sure if there's really anything we can do but shudder each time they do it. If it's any consolation, whenever I get worried about her ruining her teeth, I remember that she's going to lose them anyway!

all 3 of my little guys did this. as awful as it sounds it didn't seem to bother them at all and it seemed to stop as quickly as it started. i wouldn't worry too much about it- just a phase:)
