My son had really good results with Proactiv. You can buy it at a kiosk in the Greenwood Park Mall or online.

I myself use pro-active or you can try the clean and clear 3 piece set for $20 at the drug stores. It really works well with me.

I know that the Pro Active stuff is probably expensive but people I have talked to that have used it say that it works really well. Good luck.

I have adult acne (yes, I am a 51 year old grandmother). I have been seeing a dermatologist for years for assistance with my problems. He gave me good advice on my diet. 1. I should avoid caffine (pop and chocolate included) 2. I should avoid peanuts and peanut butter 3. Do not overdo the dairy products 4. I should avoid shellfish. When I mentioned to the doctor that I thought other foods sometimes made my break out sessions worse (potato chips are a killer for me) he suggested that I look at the ingredients. Sure enough they were cooked in peanut oil! My doctor also told me that stress can do strange things to our hormones and how our skin reacts to stress varies greatly. I don't know of too many teens that are not stressed about something.

I don't know if this info will help teens but it has helped me as an adult with a teen age problem.

Well I was lucky and my mom did arbonne while I was growing up and never had problems with acne. Just ezcema here! lol But a lot of my friends did. I am not really found of deramotoligists (spelling??) lol So far they didn't help my mom with her adult acne, me with my ezcema or any of my friends. That is me! lol
I don't suggest proactive. It has benzoyl (spelling agin) proxide which is known to dry out the skin. It dries out the zits at first but isn't repairing the skin and then begins to dry it out.

I would see a dermatologist and ask about Acutane. It is a pill form medication. Works great and prevents acne from coming back.

Have an endocrinologist do a work up. It may be her hormones that are unbalanced. Not ordinary teen stuff, but a more severe imbalace. Worked for my niece, now she is gorgeous!! Wish they tried it earlier!

There is a product called PROACTIVE. I'm sure you have seen it on TV as well as in magazines. It not only helped me but several people I know. It has a money back guarantee so you won't be out anything. It really works and it's reasonable. I tried the knock-off brands and they did not work. Good luck!

Given her age range it's probably hormomes. You'll want to double check with a dermatologist, but being on "the pill" may help in regulating her hormones and begin to reverse the problem. Also, make sure she is getting plenty of water. Dehydration could complicate an Acne problem by making it worse.

To treat what she has, I personally like an OTC system called AcneFree - it's made by University Medical. I buy mine at CVS, but I have also seen it at Marc's, Walgreen's and CVS. The downside is thedrying that occurs. However, my dermatologist recommends Cetaphil (another OTC) as a mild moisturing lotion and it works without clogging pores.

I had teenage acne and into adulthood. As a teen, I went to dermatologists who put you on antibiotics and retin-a (I don't know if this is still standard practice or not). Since then I've discovered Proactive, the only thing that has ever worked for me! Also, read about long term effect of all of the antibiotics given! UGHH! Anyway, Proactive seems expensive at first, but it usually lasted at least twice as long as they state. Please note, it will bleach clothes and towels (and even hair) if it comes directly in contact with it. You can buy it at a kiosk at TUttle and Polaris Mall, that way you don't have to make amonthly commitment through the mail. Good Luck! Clear skin makes a huge difference in self confidence!!

I used Accutane about 10 years ago when I was in college and it definitely worked.

It is a pretty potent drug though. Your daughter will have to go on birth control at the same time and have her cholesterol checked regularly. Also some other things I experienced were very dry lips and nostrils...my lips would peel and I had a couple nose bleeds. But the upside is the zits went away and also for the first time in a long time I didn't have to wash my hair every day.

YAZ birth control is helping a friend's daughter and another form of BC helped me when I was a teenager.

Proactiv worked for me for awhile but stopped. I am currently using Burts Bees Orange Essence Face Wash and The Burts Bees Blemish Stick and it is working really well. You can purchase both at Vitacost.com for a good deal. I would order 2 blemish sticks to start. I just get the pimple here or there around that time of the month, but this stuff has worked so much better than anything else (including prescription meds)that I have tried. You can read the reviews on Vitacost as well for both products.

First and foremost......OFF THE SODA, PROCESSED FOOD, FAST FOOD AND SUGAR. Start drinking lots of water and take ALFALFA. MORE protein. Sounds like the diet needs an overhaul. The chemistry needs to be in balance. Acne is only one symptom of a chemistry that's out of balance. Alfalfa helps the alkaline balances. You can buy it at Wal-Mart. EVERY person who has taken it for acne says it helps.

YOu could also try liquid chlorophyl. I LOVE the taste, too.

My oldest and youngest sons have and had bad acne on their face and back and arms. They use the hottest water they can stand and wash the oil off their face and bodies. It helps. My oldest had to go to a dermatologist and had medication. He is now 19 and it is almost cleared up.

I am glad to see both suggestion so far as I am a former Mary Kay Consultant and when I was 17 my parents resorted to Acutane to treat my acne. It was not until I had my own children eight years later and saw an endocronologist (gland specialist) that we found out the reason behind my acne was that my thyroid did not function properly. Seeing a dermotologist is definately a good way to go, but I would not jump to Acutane without first seeing the endocronologist first. My experience with Acutane would not have been considered "normal" and I caution people that the drug, while great for extremely severe cases of acne, does have a lot of side effects that don't necessarily make it worth your while. I would ask your doctor to provide you with a detailed treatment schedule for Acutane before you agree to meet with a specialist (not all dermotologists are certified to prescribe Acutane) including all of the disclosures and read over them carefully. If you would like some more detailed information just let me know.

I had the same issues as a teenager and even into adulthood. The first thing that has worked for me was cutting down on a lot of the chocolate. Not cut it out completely, but cut down a lot. The other thing that I have found that works and works well is Loreal AcneResponse: Daily Adult Acne Regimen. I have a very sensitive face and this does not aggravate it at all! It's not harsh, abrasive, nor does it burn. It's slightly expensive (about $20 per box) but for me it's well worth it. It comes in a white, blue and silver box. I have tried Proactiv, but my skin had an allergic reaction to it. I ended up with red, blotchy spots and my face actually started to swell a little bit and itch. My sister uses it and is fine. It just depends on how sensative the skin is.
Regardless if you take my suggestion, I wish the best for your daughter.

I have had troubled skin since college, and I'm 30 now. I did pills, lots of over-the-counter products, like Oxy, Clean and Clear, etc. One of the biggest things I would tell your daughter is not to touch her acne! I would always touch my face and I think I transported dirt to the skin, but also picking at it just made things worse and I have some mild scarring (that only I notice, but I wish I had treated my skin gentler!). Secondly, there is a line that Jennifer Flavin Stallone (yes, Sylvester Stallone's wife) sells on Home Shopping Network, called Serious Skin Care. It's a little more pricey than stuff at the drug store, but it contains the treatments you are looking for (salicylic acid, glycolic acid, etc.). She has lines for all different types of skin, but I found her product to help my face. Proactiv never worked for me. I think I needed something stronger. Tell her to hang in there. PS-Clean and Clear makes these oil-absoring sheets she can blot her face with during the day if its really oily, like mine. I think getting the oil off helps prevent some clogging. Oh yeah, unfortunately, I think makeup makes it worse, even powders :(

T., I would try Proactiv. I broke out like I never had in my life when I was pregnant and it's worked like wonders. You could tell when I forgot to use it because I would break out. But I cannot tell you well it works!!

If you have tried all the over the counter stuff, you should take her to a dermatologist. My daughter and I both took the Accutane treatment, which cures acne. It is great, but it is expensive. It is a 5 month treatment and you have to have a blood test and pregnancy test every month. Our insurance covered ours.

I am currently using proactiv and really like the way my skin looks.

I have been to the dermatologist and spent a ton of money with him to get what I thought were minimal results and tried almost everything OTC and just could not get my skin to clear up. My skin was never very bad as a teenager, it got bad once I got into my 20's which they say is pretty common.

As one person said, the benzoyl's in the proactive can be very drying; but then so is salicydic acid thats in a lot of other stuff, you just have to figure out how his skin reacts best to it. Benzoyls dry my face out to beat hell, but I have found under the proactiv system if I use the face wash once a day at night along with the toner and avoid their repairing lotion (I really like normal face lotion without medicine, like Biore Energizing is my favorite) my skin seems very balanced, soft and without blemishes.

It's worth a shot, it can take multiple trial and errors to get something that's right for him, and you have to remember at his age he also has larger than normal oil glands which contributes a lot to his acne, some of it he will grow out of.

Both of my teens have battled with acne as well. Arbonne has a supplement that has been helpful and Proactive has worked the best of all of the cleansing programs we have tried. You have to stick with it as it does bring out more blemishes and dries the skin. The prescription from the dermatologist did not help much...and was very expensive.

Im a mother also to two teenage boys and they had really bad acne their doctor recomended they use neutragena acne soap morning and night{ found in the beauty dept}at your local dept store. you cant even tell that they even had an acne problem.

I have to agree with some of the others about ProActive. I always had problem skin and I discovered proactive at about 20 yrs old. Oh how I wish I had found it sooner. It was a god send. It is a bit pricey but it was well worth it! Try it!

I'm assuming you've tried a lot of different kinds of skin care? I used to sell Mary Kay, and honestly, I saw it do wonders for kids skin. You may have to go with the original Classic skin care for oily skin (the consultants will know what you are talking about.) But I had a cousin who had trouble for years and she used it regularly and she looks great. It's a 5 step deal...cleanser, toner, mask and moisturizer and then a foundation....but you dont' have to use it.

I am a SURVIVOR of very bad acne as a teen. The ONLY thing that has ever help was the pill. I know its an ugly thought but some acne is hormonal and for me it was and still is the pill. I feel for your daughter and I know what shes going though. Talk to her doctor and see if low dose ortho tricyclen could help. Mine cleared up with in a month of taking it. It was a miracle! I wish her the best my heart truly does go out to her.

Accutane. See a good dermatologist and start down the path toward accutane approval. Yes, I'm aware of all the warnings & the legalities of the drug, but it was the only thing that cleared up my acne, and my brother's (in his case, permanently.) While some facial acne (for me) resurfaced later (like, a decade later), I never again had body acne. Sounds crazy, but keeping to a low-carb diet like the South Beach helps, too. Protein & veggies, no breads, which can aggravate the condition for many people. (This advice came from a dermatologist, btw.) Good luck & take action, it will change her life --

Have you tried using any acne cleansing products? If so you want to get a line of products that contains salicylic acid that will penetrate the pores and loosen dead skin buildup. Sometimes when using an acne product the skin becomes dry. so it is important to use an oil free moisturizer. It is a battle because you are trying to fight the oil production but you need some balance of oil on the skin. I had that problem when I was that age too. Ortho Tricyclen (birth control) helped clear my face up.

Also I have been hearing alot about clean and clear has a kit out now that they say has better results than proactiv

I'm a 70 y/o Mother of 4, Grandmother of 7, and Great-Grandmother of almost 4 !!! Please get your daughter to a dermatologist immediately and let the doctor help your daughter. Please do NOT let her suffer as I've watched over the years. I dragged my teenagers a million times for whatever help we could get and I'm sure the 'help' is so much better nowadays!!! I never had an acne problem but my husband did - guess my children got the gene from him, but they suffered dreadfully, in varying degrees, and I know other kids whose acne problems overshadowing their whole lives - NOT good!!!!! Please don't let your daughter go through that!!!!!

I have heard alot of good things about Proactiv. If your daughter wears makeup, it may be one cause of her acne. Diet plays an important role as well. Too much greasy foods can cause acne.

My only suggestion is to look at the make up she is wearing (if any). When I was that age I found that the drugstore make up didn't work well with my skin. Mary Kay, Merle Norman, Clinique all did well. I would suggest looking at that and even the cleanser. I had sensitive skin and what I thought was acne was just a reaction to the product. Even as an adult I have that occasionally. Neutrogena cleanser and moisturizer work well and growing up I was all about Noxema. Just a couple of things to think about. Also - if it is really bad, talk to a dermatologist. Good Luck!

I would try tea tree products. The Body Shop has a wonderful line of tea tree facial products. Tea tree is from Australia and is a topical antiseptic. I never experienced 'teen acne', however, I went through some horrible skin episodes a few years ago. I took medication for almost two years to the point it began to make me ill. I was sent from my family doc to a dermatologist, who wanted me to use a special cleanser & ointment. With insurance, the ointment was going to be over $100.00 per month. So, I ordered Proactive online. This past Decemeber, will be two years since I have been using it. I have never had a breakout since then. I have been tempted to try other skin care products, but choose not to due to the great effect Proactive has had for me. You can regulate the shipments. You can try proactive and see if it works. Proactive has worked for everyone I know that uses it. If that doesn't work I would take her to a dermatologist and see what they can do. The proactive is seen on t.v. and was designed by dermatologists.

I have been married for almost 12 yrs. and my husband and I have 3 boys ages 10,7 and 4. I am 31 yrs. old.

Proactiv! My husband has (or had, I should say) some really bad adult acne and Proactiv cleared it up in no time. Now he just uses it to maintain his healthy skin. It really does work. If you're looking for a less expensive route, Neutrogena has some good products that you can buy in a store. Also, drink LOTS OF WATER! Water is such a natural cleanser for everything in your body, especially skin. Good luck!

As a teen I had bad acne as well. What works - MaryKay #3 program: Cleanser, freshner, moisturizer, and use the acne treatment gel. Have her wash her face in the morning and at night before bed. Never go to bed with make-up on, it clogs the pores and will make the acne worse. Something else that will help, is to limit the sugar and the greasy foods (chips, french fries, pizza, etc.). I am 37 and have been using MaryKay since I was a teen (I do not sell it). It was the only thing that cleared the acne and now I have people tell me all the time that I do not look 37! Hope this helps.

I read that the owner of Revlon cosmetics (if I remember the right company) advised a waitress that had severe acne to rub it with mayonaise every day. She began doing that on the job between customers. When he visited that restaurant a few months later, he didn't even recognize her--her face was all clear ! Another nature's medicine book advises to use goldenseal. And I know from lots of experience now that Butcher's Broom (ruscus a.) clears up infections on and in the body. By the way, it's best never to use isopropyl, rubbing, or whatever propanol alcohol on your skin and to stop using every product with it in it--cancer cells multiply in the presence of that kind of alcohol ( see hulda r. clark's books)

Cut down on soda and fried foods, then have her wash with an exfoliant at least 3 times a week (I like St. Ive's Apricot Scrub) and use a toner or astringent on the other days. She should also be sure to moisturize everyday, dry skin can breakout as easily as oily skin. And use a lotion with SPF-skin cancer is the most common cancer in America!

I know a lot of people that have had success with Proacitv in their teen years and adult years. Sometimes seeing a dermatologist is a good idea also to see what they think is best for your daughter. There are different types of acne and sometimes treatment varies depending on the type. I would say seeing a dermatologist would be a good start.

I know this won't help her but she will have nice soft wrinkle free skin as she ages. Just try to keep popping pimples/ scars to a min.

I had very little acne. I think maybe 3 or 4 zits honestly and my skin looks terrible but my sister had more zits than you could count and has the best shin and very few wrinkles. She also has a killer to die for body after 3 kids. Of course she takes care of her self.

Hi T.! I know there are so many products out there now that swear to work. I have always had acne (still do at 35). When my uncle was a teen his doctor told my grandmother that Dove soap and Oxy 10 2-3 times a day was the best thing for it. Over the years both my parents and I as an adult have spent alot of $ on "the best new" thing on the market, but I always come back to that because it not only works the best but it doesn't dry my skin out either. I've also noticed as I've gotten older that using better quality make up helps alot. Hope this helps for her. Acne can really do some damage on your self esteem too so be sure to tell her often how beautiful you think she is!

I recommend ProActive. My cousins have always had very bad acne (we are in our mid to late 30's now) and they have used it for several years with great success! It's slightly expensive but well worth it. Good luck!

My oldest daughter went through the same thing and I know that this is kind of frowned upon, but we started her on the birth control pill and also used the Pro-Active system and it cleared her face right up. Our Dr said that most of the time in girls it has to do with their hormones, and the birth control pill helps regulate those hormones. And then the Pro-Active system just helped keep the bacteria off her face. Her father of course threw a fit saying that he felt like it was giving her permission to go and have sex, but I talked with her and told her that it was not giving her permission, but was to help with her face. Daddy got over it once he seen how well it helped with her acne and was upset with himself that he kept us from doing it for so long. I am sure that this is not for everyone, but it worked great for us and she is now 21 and still has no problems with the acne. I would do it again if I had to.

there is a soap out there that has green tea in it cant think of the other ingredient but it is good...for acne...if she uses it regularly give i will see if i can find it for you and tell, the other suggestions would be take her to a dermatologist, she can be put on a antibiotic, or cream t help with that, also pro active does work and is good for teens also..hope that helps

Try tea tree oil face wash etc. from the body shop it was a miracle for me.

ProActive works really well. Also, I took my daughter to her Dr and he gave her a prescription to put on morning and night and it did wonders. I can't remember the name of the cream because it has been a few years but it did work.

My daughter uses proactive and it seems to do the job. Sometimes it's internal and you need a dermatologist to give her a prescription along with a topical solution. Also, believe it or not her pillow case should be changed frequently. The oils and product from hair can irritate the skin. Mary Kay also has good product, especially the acne gel. Good luck to your daughter. It's tough at this age.

There are so many factors when it come to skin issues. Of course, I would want to know what she eats (or does not eat) on a daily basis, because that is the number one contributor to acne.

You can attempt topical remedies, but they are so very toxic and only temporary. Your aproach needs to be internal because usually what is going on with the skin is a direct reflection to what is going on in the bowels.

My son had the same problem during his teen years. So, I started making him smoothies every morning. In them went all organic frozen strawberries, blueberries, and bananas, blended with cold pressed organic apple juice, milled flax seed, flax oil, probiotic powder and E3Live.

Within about 3 months his face cleared up nicely. He also mentioned being more regular and having more energy.

I finally just took him to a dermatologist and he prescribed several prescriptions and we are trying them. He said it is due to hormones. He told us to stop dairy and caffeine for a while also. I am a mother of three 14,9,3 and I'm 37 married to a wonderful man.

I had bad acne when I was a teen and as an adult too, specially in my back, about four years ago I found out that I could not tolarate wheat and gluten. A diet free of this clear my acne. This is my personal suggestion. Good luck.

Try putting her on Proactive. My acne appeared in my mid twenties. I started it a few months before my wedding and it really worked. It can be a bit pricey, but it's worth your daughter's self confidence.

I had horrible teen acne and still deal with it now, so I understand. If you can afford it I would suggest you find a good dermatologist to take her to. If the acne is severe the dermatologist would be best to determine what type of treatment she needs. Otherwise you can try Proactiv, I know of a couple of people that's used it and it really worked for them. I wouldn't suggest it, however, if your daughter has sensitive skin; I used it and it broke me out. I've also used the Clinique line that is sold in most department stores, it is pretty good.

Also, just a side note - if your daughter eats alot of fast foods it can cause outbreaks. She also needs to have a regular face care regemine, both morning and night, to reduce the amount of dirt/oil on her face.

My teens went through a time of bad acne. With one, we tried changing his diet, but that didn't work. We also tried Proactive, but that didn't work either. With another, we took him to the doctor for prescription medicine, but that required my son to have bloodwork done every so often because of the potential for liver problems. The doctor told us that acutane has some potentially serious side effects and he didn't want to prescribe that until the last resort. We finally began using "Nature's Cure" which is homoepathic and can be found in many supermarkets for about $10 for a four-week supply. It doesn't clear up the acne completely, but it's a huge improvement and it doesn't have the side effects. In addition, I encourage my kids to wash their faces at least a couple times a day, with a mask once a week or so. Thankfully, there are a lot of options for clearing up acne scarring, which is something we are keeping in mind for the future in case our kids need it. Hope you find a workable and healthy solution!

Mary Kay makes a line called Velocity and they have a facial wash and moisturizer. My cousin has very bad acne and just started using it and her face has already cleared up in just a week.
