Ok so my husband wants to become a police officer and I have no idea where to start, nor does he! I heard you have to have TCLOSE Certs before getting a job, but then I heard that some places will train you. Maybe there are some ladies on here who are officers or ladies who have husbands in law enforcement... I knew a guy who started at my home town department and had nothing but a HS diploma. Please Help!
Oh and he is starting classes in the fall, and there was an opening in town and the only requirement was a high school diploma. However, it did mention TCLOSE thats why I ask....
In larger towns/cities he will need a college degree, just to even apply. .. In some small towns he could apply and see what they say.
Is there a community college in your area? He should look int o taking some classes in Criminal Justice.
Some people that served in the Military also have a good chance of being accepted, depending on their training.
Good Luck to him. It is such an honorable profession.
If you are in Brenham, I believe Blinn offers a criminal justice program. I think it is an associates degree that you earn and it is my understanding that part of the program prepares you for the TCLEOSE exam. Best of luck to you all.
Hurray to have a husband who wants to serve the people. Many do not want to be served, so it can be difficult. My husband is a retired police officer (medical retirement early). He looked around to see who all was applying and then interviewed when he could. He was blessed to be hired by a department who paid for the training. Some do and some don't.
Be sure to never complain about his job. It is a tough job but also very rewarding if that is his passion. Be sure to tell him how proud you are of his willingness to serve. When you have complaints, find someone you trust that you can vent to so that he always comes home to a supportive and peaceful home. He will need that so much. There is a high divorce rate in the police force because there are too many wives who expect their husbands to be different than they are and do not understand how important their role is to the sanity of their husbands. Talk to other police wives and be sure to ask for the positives as well as preparation for the negatives. Then be your husband's biggest ally.
I suggest your hubby call someone at the pd and ask them what there requirements are for that county. Good luck. Congrats to your hubby.
It depends on the police department if he needs to have TCLEOSE certification or if the department will send him through the training.
I know that the San Antonio Police Department sends recruits through the training course. Small towns usually do not pay for it, but require TCLEOSE certification be done independently.
The best thing to do is to look at several police departments that he would like to hire on with and find out if they provide training or not.
If he wants to get TCLEOSE certification on his own, most colleges in Texas offer it.
By the way, not all police departments require a college degree. San Antonio does not, nor do several other cities around San Antonio. But I know that San Antonio pays police officers with a college degree more than they pay officers without a degree. Each department has different requirements. Again, just look at the requirements for the police departments that he is interested in.
I'm a retired police officer and I do not know what TCLOSE is. It's not required in my geographical area. I assume it's a diploma from a school. I suggest that most departments prefer to train their own officers but the only way to know is to call each department in which you're interested and ask.
