My daughter was swimming all day saturday with no sunblock on. She now has sunburn on her arms and shoulders with big white lines where her swim top straps were.

Problem? We are in a wedding on saturday, and we are wearing strapless dresses, so my girl is going to look like she has white straps on her shoulders......AAAAGGGGHHHHH

Anyone has a good solution to tame the tan lines? I will try anything reasonable at this point....

THANK YOU!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, looking into the day spa we are going to friday for the spray tan.

Lee.... I am well aware of the whole mole thing, I have had the same problem myself, which is why I could have strangled her for spending that much time out in the sun with NO sunblock. I wasn't home when she went to the neighbors to swim. Sometimes I forget that other parents are not as attentive as I am. LOL

Thanks for the suggestions ladies!

Makeup. It works on all types of skin... not just facial skin. In fact, swimsuit & other models are in makeup from hairline to toes for a LOT of their shoots. You can use store makeup, costume/theatrical makeup (waterbased liquid makeup from a costume store) or have her airbrushed at a salon. The theatrical or airbrushing will last the longest.

My mom was always slathering up the kids and forgetting herself. And usually had 2 or 3 balls to attend in the summer. Whenever she had the forehead slap sunscreen mishap, she'd have some mixed up the day before to match the rest of her and then apply it with a sponge. Worked like a charm.

L., I hope I didn't come across as condescending. I didn't mean it that way. I figured that there was more to the story about why she got the sunburn, but you just didn't put it in your original post. There are days that I still get too much sun, and I want to kick myself for being so dumb. It happens. Hope she's not in any pain! I know how painful sunburns can be!!

Try a spray tan. I was totally skeptical about them, until I tried it. They do give you a nice color (if done properly) and look really natural and nice, in most cases, even on fair skin. It may not totally erase the lines, but it will definitely blend it so that it may be barely noticeable. I would recommend getting the spray tan the day before the wedding, if possible. And be careful because some of the color 'may' rub onto her dress. That's why I say do it at least the day before. Presumably, she will have bathed at least once by the wedding, and the bulk of what would wash or rub off would come off in that first bath. You could do it two days before, but in truth, they don't last very well, so two days before is as far as I'd go to ensure there is still some of it left by the wedding. Water is definitely something to avoid with a spray tan if you want it to last, so I'd avoid swimming after she has it.

And I know this goes without saying, but as a fair skinned person who was allowed to get sunburns as a child (before anyone really knew how bad that is for us), please don't let your daughter get sunburns! I've had countless moles removed for containing abnormal cells, and four of those had progressed toward melanoma, and had to be surgically excised, leaving me with depressions in my skin where they took the "chunk" of skin out, leaving rather unsightly scars as a result. Sunburns aren't nice to us. :)

Sorry for the soapbox, but I know from not nice experiences that we really need to protect our kids from sun damage.

On the other hand, I hope the spray tan works for you!

I might be overprotective, but I honestly think I'd go with makeup before a spray tan. I know it's hard, but try not to worry about it too much - she's a kid and she wouldn't be the first child in a wedding with sunburn marks, a scraped knee, a bruise, etc. It happens and makes for a good story. You may also see a lot of the color fading by this weekend, and it may not be as noticeable you as you fear. Good luck whatever you decide, and have fun at the wedding!

I used to have an airbrush/spraytan business, and I can tell you from years of experience that although it may help the white marks a bit, it will also deepen the rest of her body's color so it may still be almost as noticeable (it doesn't "even things out" as much as people would like). For a really quick fix I'd do dermablend, or do the spray tan but just don't expect miracles (you can't "spot spray").

I would say spray tan!! Go to a salon where an actual person sprays her(not a machine). You might pay $30.00 but I think she will look great!

I realize I'm responding late in the game, but I have to go with Maureen B. on this one - the spray-on tan might sound like the perfect solution, but in the same situation, I wouldn't coat my daughter in the brew of chemicals everyone seems to think is so harmless. Any skin reaction would look a thousand times worse than some strap lines. And she's a kid! It's not the end of the world, and anyone who takes offense at your daughter's strap lines, in the summer, is being awfully shallow.
I won't get on my UV damage soapbox, as that has been covered already, I just hope your daughter has learned her lesson about ALWAYS applying sunblock.
Have fun! It's a summer wedding! Don't sweat the small stuff.

Sally Hansen has a product called "Airbrushed Legs" and it cost about $10 a can. I LOVE it! It is water repellent...not proof but I used it in the pool and it stayed great! It is for legs but you could use it in other area's. I spray the substance into my palm and then apply for a more even coverage rather than just spraying directly onto my skin.
You can get several different shades and can get it at most any drug store. I don't tan very easily and I love to wear capris in the summer...so I use the airbrush tan and no one can tell that I normally have white, white legs! It does cover scars and veins too (just an fyi for any other purpose) I think this would work great for your daughter or any of the sunless tanning products on the market these days.! Good luck and have fun at the wedding!

I got burned last weekend and it seemed like using lotion frequently helped to calm it down faster. Fake tanning the rest or foundation are great options too.

As a beauty consultant, I deal with this quite often--For a cheap/temporary fix--foundation is best. Just make sure that you match it up with the coloring you're trying to blend with or it will most definitely give away what you're trying to hide. You will also want to 'set' the foundation with a powder to prevent rubbing/transfer. If you have a local Mary Kay consultant, she will be more than happy to help you with this and will most likely have the items in stock so you won't have to wait. Best of luck to you and your daughter!

probably a makeup artist will be in your near future. They can recommend the best way to cover the white areas and have them blend into the other areas.

You can buy tanning lotion at the drugstore. It will actually change the skin color almost instantly. You only need a small portion, I don't think it looks as natural as a tan itself but at least it will cover the area where her straps were.
Good luck!! Have a great time at the Wedding!!

I do special events and many times bridesmaids have black tattoos or inappropriate tattoos.. The brides will want the tattoos covered for certain dresses. They will have spray on makeup to cover them up for weddings.

Call some of the different salons in your area and see who offers this. It works wonders.

That happened to my maid of honor who chose a strapless dress. We found a lightweight sweater at TJ Maxx, that covered it nicely - problem solved!
