Taking Twins Out of the House in the Cold!

My B/G twins are 10 months old and our gift of unseasonably warm weather is over. Since they aren't walking yet (great crawlers, DD is standing independently but not walking YET) I am having great difficulty figuring out how to get them out of the house.

In the warm weather, we were strollering fools! I took them to the park, to the post office, small grocery trips, etc. Fortunately, we live in a great community where most things are in walking distance.

Now, in the cold, our stroller trips need to stay short or non-existent. It is so difficult to dress them in their gear, put one, then the other, in their car seats, drive them to destination (i.e. community center for open play), get them into the building (they're too heavy to hold simultaneously and be safe), keep an eye on both, then take them back into the car... you get the idea.

Am I missing something here? Are there suggestions for this? I think I'm one of the few parents who can't wait for their babies to walk, will be challenging but at least I will be able to get out and about with them!

Thanks for your help!

So What Happened?

Thanks all for the advice. I am happy to do the work (bundling them up, etc.) I was mostly worried about transporting them, especially if I have to drive to the destination. I have an awesome double stroller, but it is very cumbersome and doesn't fit in my trunk. HOWEVER, I did just find a very cheap, used double umbrella stroller to store in my car and I think that may solve that problem!

Also, I think I was worrying too much about the babies being too cold for walks (typical first time mom) and I think I will resume short walks once a day if the weather isn't too nasty. I still have their bundle-me bags (good suggestion) and may add those to the stroller to keep them toasty. Thanks everyone!

It does take forever to get out of the house in the winter but I wouldn't stop stollering at all. I have bundle me's for the stroller and a weather cover. Until it's under 20 degrees and if you dress them properly and make sure ears and hands are covered, they will be fine outside. I put baby legs on my kids in the winter and always an extra layer than I wear and I've never had a problem. You could also wear one baby and alternate. That keeps them and you really warm. I put my son in my Ergo on my chest or back and he stays really toasty.
have fun this winter.

I know what you're going through, my b/g twins were born in January (they are almost 4 now) and the months from October through February were rough (after the infant carrier and before they could walk). I loved my local library, it has a little play area and story time for the little ones. Also I sought out other Mom's in the neighborhood for play dates. Even getting out and going to Grandma's was a relief! I know it's a pain to bundle them up, but even when it snows it's great to get out for some fresh air and let them explore the snow. At this age they also could sit forever with my tupperware and pots and pans banging and exploring "safe" cabinets. You could also bring a bin of snow in the house, put it in the tub and let them "play in the snow", make it fun and throw some food coloring in there. We need to get creative to make it through these long winters, hang in there, spring will be back before you know it!

Do you have a double stroller? My kids are not twins, but close in age. I love my double stroller. When they were babies, I would bundle them up and transfer them staight from the car to the stroller. Most double strollers have big baskets so you can take off hats, gloves and coats and stick them in the stroller. It does take longer to get out of the house in the winter, but it is worth it to break your day up.

I know you are adamant about not going out with the two little tikes but not to sound harsh, you need to get over it and just do it even if its more time and more challenging. It is well worth it for you and for the kids. Don't get discouraged by the cold weather or the painstaking annoyance of bundling them and having them all over the place. I was pregnant (supposed to be on bed rest...premature labor at 26 weeks) and running after a VERY active 1 year old who ALWAYS wanted to be carried and refused to walk in the snow and I had to lug her around while having a lot of trouble with pain etc. and you just do it. In the end its better than sitting at home and going absolutely out of your mind. Trust me and others when we tell you it is just not worth staying home once the kids go even worse stir-crazy. I know its hard. But we all feel your frustration. Its really hard in chicago in the cold winters but what can you do? I wish it would be warm out longer. Good luck to you in this challenge. Maybe go with another friend which can help out a bit too. If I think of any other ideas I will let you know. Good luck in this long winter ahead...:) Also, depending on where you live there are alot of places you can keep them contained in.

Hi!
I don't have twins, but I do home daycare. I HAVE to get out--even in the cold weather. I think it is worth it to bundle everyone up as long as I can get out! How about your stroller. I would put them from the car into the stroller to transport them in and then unbundle them as they sit in it. I have a double stroller and a triple stroller and couldn't get out without them! The cold is just starting:(
