Tag Less Clothing Giving My Infant a Terrible Rash on His Back

My 8 month old son started getting a rash on the top of his back at 4 months old. I took him to his Pediatrician. The Pediatrician wasn't sure what was causing the rash and prescribe a topical crème for skin irritations. Well the rash came and went and then finally a light bulb went off and I realized that rash appeared after my son wore or slept in clothes with the tag less stamps. Carter's causes the worst rash. His skin will get so red and irritated it will almost bleed. I am not sure if it is something in the ink causing it or that the ink is so thick the skin can’t breathe when his is on his back. Well once I realized this all clothing with the tag less ink stamp were removed from his wardrobe. I did contact Carter's and they won't tell me what is in the ink but that they have received some complaints and have modified their Spring line with a new formula for the stamp. They have asked me to send all the clothing back to them for testing and they will send me a voucher for new clothing....of which I most likely won't use since I won't be putting my baby in clothes with the tag less stamps anymore. The Target line Circo also causes the rash. I contacted them, but have not heard back to date.

I am very concerned about what kind of toxins could be in my child now. Has anyone else out there had this problem?

My 14 month has had an unknown rash. Doctor claimed it was eczema. But now I am going to look into it better to determine whether he clothing was the culprit. I had tried to look for a pattern involving clothing but I didnt see one. I never thought to look at the tagless aspect.

STop worrying Mom! Before I read the "about me" section of this article I already knew you were a first time Mom. We are overprotective of our babies as it is and being a first time Mom just amplifies this. I experienced the same problem with my kids and from what I have seen it caused no long term effects nor have any toxins come back to haunt me. In my experience it was just simple irritation and once the clothes were removed it never appeared again. Now I just purchase items with the tags and take them off.

I have noticed my 6 month old son getting an irritation on the back of his neck at times. I always just assumed it was the collar/neck line of the outfit. We do have a lot of Carter's outfits and now I will be more observant as to when this irritation occurs and if it is with certain clothing. Also, I've noticed that the Gerber's tagless onsies are not a stamp but more of a decal. Most of these have peeled off of his onesies and I am going to contact Gerber about this.

I agree with what one of the other Moms said - don't send the clothes back - she is right, you will have no legal leg to stand on if something comes of it. I would contact the Better Business Bureau and see if they can help, and also the Attorney General's office. Having worked with inks myself in the stamp industry, most inks do not contain anything that is really toxic. There are even inks specially made for skin and clothing that are non toxic. Also, a lot of food gets stamped as well. You could also try calling around to various stamp/ink companies and ask if they have industrial ink that is used on clothing for companies that want to go tagless. That might be of some assistance to you. Good luck!

I can't help you about the tag issue but I can tell you this....DON'T send them one stich of clothing till they refund you money!!! A friend of mine delt with them about strings in the footed PJs. Well a string got wrapped around her daughter's toe and it almost was to the point to have to have it removed!!! She called Carter's and they wanted all the footed sleeps back so they could look them over and blah blah blah. They real reason they do this is so you don't have the clothes if you decide to hire a lawyer!! Especially if they won't tell you what is in the tagless stuff!!

Good luck!

My 8 month old daughter has eczema, so I understand when it comes to sensitive skin. I doubt there are any harmful toxins in your child now that were caused by that. My daughter breaks out the same way if we use any other detergent than Drift or she uses any soap other than Dove. You should still send the clothes back you can always put an undershirt on under the tag less shirts. I might keep one just in case you ever have to prove anything.

I admire you for thinking beyond the pediatritian's advice for cream.
