I just started using a Symbicort inhaler today because the Pro Air wasn't powerful enough for my Asthma. I hav ean itch in the back of my throat that is continuous. Is it safe to take cough medicinewith this? I was told not to take one with an antehestimine when I was using my Pro Air because I already take Singulair & Zyrtec.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

S H I was prescribed the stronger inhaler because the other one wasn't doing it's job. I was told not to take the one with antehistimines in it but can take Robitussin my allergist's nurse said. I don't know if there is a difference in the two inhalers that would make taking the robitussin a bad thing. My doctor prescribe dthis to me awhile ago and I just started using it so I wasn't just in to see her to ask. I think it's post nasal drip although the allergist's nurse who give sme my allergy injections said it sounds like something is triggering my asthma.
Malia I trie dtalking onlin eto the walgreens pharmasists since it's so late an dhe said to ask my dr. I guess I will cough all night long again. I was tol dto take a teaspoon of honey for an itchy throat by one nurse. Too bad I don't have that in the house. I will look for some honey cough drops in the hous eand try those.

If you can't contact your doctor about this, talk to a pharmacist... they know a LOT about drug interactions, and what is safe to take with what.

If I am thinking correctly, Zyrtec IS an antihistamine..... don't take a cough syrup at this point without asking someone who knows what is in the different items you take.

Call your local hospital.

They should have a 24/7 nurse advice line AND a 24 hour pharmacy. They can look up ALL your meds, and not only look for contraindications, but also make suggestions as to other meds (or solutions) that you can take.

I use Advair disk, and on the package it states to drink something afterward or gargle since the mist that clings to ur throat will give you a soft sore throat or itchy throat. could be why ur throat is itchy or scratchy.

are you using a spacer with this inhaler? the medication may be ending up directly in your mouth/back of throat instead of farther into your lungs without the spacer...hence causing a tickle...

You don't know why... you have the itch in the back of your throat.
Hence, don't take 'cough' syrup for it. And plus, you were told not to.

An itch in the back of the throat, can mean even that a sore throat is arising. Or it is due to post-nasal drip etc.
Not necessarily, due to coughing.

Ask your Doctor.
Don't guess or take meds, that you are not sure about.

If your current inhaler is not working either, tell your Doctor.
I have Asthma.
But I have never taken Symbicort.
