Switching from Bottle to Sippy Cup

My son is almost 15 months and I am ready to switch him from a bottle to a sippy cup. He will drink water and milk from a sippy cup just fine for snacks and meals, but he will not drink his milk in the morning or at bedtime from the cup. I would love some advice for those of you who have already made the transition. We had a hard time getting him to take a bottle in the first place.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of the great advice. I went and bought some of the Nuby sippy cups and we went cold turkey. He was pretty stubborn for 2 days. He didn't drink his morning milk until 3:00pm both days. After that he gave in, and now drinks his milk from the Nuby sippy cups great!

The sippy cup is not a replacement for the bottle little one's do not need to go to bed with a drink and especially anything but water anyway if you choose to do that. Sippys are a transition from bottles to cups and should only be used at the times you would use a cup ie. at the table, getting a drink between meals. Kids will not let them selves starve and they will drink when they need one. The only reason they would "need" one to go to bed is if you put them to bed with their bottle and so it is more of a soothing habit they have developed. But a horrible habit for their teeth more than anything else. Any normally developed child can drink from a regular cup anywhere from thirteen month's to fifteen month's at the longest.
Good Luck,

The only way to do it for my kids was to go without bottles cold turkey. Completely put them out of site and just offer sippy cups. My son took a week of fussing and whining before he finally gave in. My daughter was very easy to transition, did it without any protest at all.

So my advice is just do it once and for all, he'll get thirsty enough to drink it from a sippy cup, especially if he's already used to drinking from it.

Good luck.

Hi K.,
I didn't have too much difficulty with my daughter. She started biting the nipples of the bottles, so I didn't replace the nipples, I went to wal-mart and bought the $0.97 hard nuby sippy cups. Boxed up the bottles, filled the cupboard with sippy cups and without the offer of a bottle available she didn't put up a fuss.
My sister was having trouble with her girls transitioning, but when I seen them last week, when we were both visiting my parents, and they took my daughters cups just fine and refused their own from that point, I had to go to wal-mart and buy more so that they could all have one.
Kids are funny, but that's been my experience in this area.

We went through this too...try using Nubby cups for his milk in the morning and at bedtime. The nipples are more like that of a bottle, but it is a cup. We still do this, as my 22 month old still gets milk at naptime and bedtime. She drank fine from a regular sippy cup, but would not take her milk from it. I think it's a comfort thing, but we needed the bottles for her little brother (they're 18 months apart). Just be careful, b/c if the nipple part isn't lined up well, they can leak (or if you don't screw the lid on just right)...they have new "sports cups" and those seem to not leak as much. They have a big selection at Wal Mart, under all the other sippy cups--they're usually in bins. GOOD LUCK!

Hello - the only way my son will dring milk out of a sippy cup is if I warm it up a little. If it is cold he won't drink it. Everything else he will drink fine. Good luck

I know you have probably heard this a million times but just throw all of the bottles away. I didn't believe it would work but it did. I was terrified!!!!

I also just recently gave this advice to my best friend with a son about the same age as yours. She was wary at first but tried it and he hasn't had a bottle since.

Just throw those bottles away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello K.

They make sippy cups with soft tips on them that work really well. I started my sone at 8m on them and he has use sippy cups ever scince. Start with them during the day and then slowly get him onto them at night too. Good luck with it.

My daughter was the same way with the sippy cup transition. She gave me fits. My sister in law told me to try the Nuby sippy cups. I found them at walmart. They have a soft spout and I think it seems more like a bottle nipple. It worked Great for me. That was the only kind of cup she would drink from for several months. Then after she was used to that one I introduced different kind of cups. Good luck to you!

I gave my daughter only water in her bottle at night and in the morning. If he wants milk that is what you use a sippy cup for. We have also not really used sippy cups, I use small glasses at the dinner table (shot glasses work good) and help my nine month old hold the glass with water in it and then empty most of it so she can get her hands around it and practice. I believe your 15 month old would be able to drink from a regular cup. Hope any of these suggestions help.

I just went through this, or am going through this. My doc told me just to do it cold turkey so I have but she isn't drinking any milk. She refuses to drink the milk out of a sippy cup but will drink everything else out of the sippy. I also used the bottle at night to help put my baby to sleep so at the same time I took away they bottle I let her fall asleep in her crib by herself it has worked for me. I also give her vitamins to make up for what she is losing from the milk.

I switched my daughter from a bottle to a sippy at about 12 months and I just did it cold turkey, I threw away all her bottles with her watching. It was rough for a few days then she basically got over it and gave in.

The trick for us was to use the Nubby cups you can get at WalMart. We tried several other styles and had similar luck to you. These have soft spouts that come closer to resembling a nipple on a bottle. You may try a couple of these when he refuses other styles and see if it helps. They worked great for us and they are always in ready supply at WalMart!
