My son is 4. He is a healthy little man, but we have had our share of sicknesses. From the flu to ear infections. In the past when he had flu like symtoms, we would take him to the doctor. The doctor would just tell us to make sure he gets some rest and take tylenol. Thats pretty much all he can do. My husband called me at work today to tell me our son is running a fever and his belly is hurting. He gave hime tylenol and it brought his fever down. When I got home he still did not feel well. He said "mommy I wish I didn't feel this way anymore." He is asleep now, no fever, but breathing very heavily. I want to wait to see if he will feel better in the morning, but I read headlines today. Swine flu???? I am worried. Should I be. I wanted to know another mothers oppion. Would you take him to the ER??? Please respond soon. Thank You.

What can I do next?

There are a lot of viruses going around right now. I would not be concerned about it being the swine flu. Where I work we have a stomach bug, a cold and respiratory infection going around.

I just want to make a side note on this. What happened to the days when kids would go outside and play from sun up to sun down and just come in to eat lunch. They would be covered from head to toe in dirt and grime? They didn't get sick near as much as kids today. People need to stop being so concerned about germs b/c it's making viruses and bacteria stronger and that makes us get sick more. I know the majority of you aren't going to agree with me but that is just my opinion.

S.,
I just checked www.webmd.com and in 11 of the 12 reported cases of swine flu, the child had DIRECT contact with pigs. Also, abdominal tenderness is not listed as a symptom of swine flu. This is the link
http://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/news/20090421/swine-flu...

I would keep an eye on him and if his condition deteriorates, then I would consider taking him to the ER. Of course, if you have a primary care physician and he's not getting better within a reasonable amount of time, then maybe you should take him to the doctor. Just keep an eye on him and make a judgment call based on your "mommy intuition."

If the fever has not gone down in two days. For peace of mind take him the doctor. He can be tested for Swine flu with just a simple swab at the dr's office. Good luck to you and hope your little one feels better soon.

The dr. can do a swab culture from the nose and have the lab test it for "swine flu." That's how they are testing for it.

I would not be concerned about swine flu. Your son would also be having the chills alog with aches and pains. The headache associated with the flu WOULD NOT be alliviated with tylenol.

The flu is a respitory infection generally not associated with an upset stomach. Antibiotics won't help because it is viral.

Unless you have reason to believe that he has been in contact with someone who has he swine flu. I would not be concerned unless his fever remains over 102 degrees.

There have only been 20 confirmed cases of swine flu in the entire U.S. I would not think that is the culprit considering all the other viruses going around right now. If he is still sick tomorrow or his symptoms get worse, then I would call and consult his doctor for a professional opinion. Most likely he will be just fine.

I don't feel so alone after reading your post.
I'm going to call my pediatrician this morning to ask about my baby. He has had cold/flu symptoms all weekend. He has been coughing all night. I have been worried too. It is scary when you hear stuff in the news and then your child gets sick.
My husband wanted to take our baby to the ER this weekend, but I talked him out of it. I didn't want more exposure either unless we really needed to. So, we waited it out and treated him ourselves this weekend by doing things we normally do when they are sick.Tylenol, popcicles, runny nose medicine (prescribed by our doctor previously, etc. We are calling the baby's doctor as soon as the open this morning. I suggest the same for you.

Good Luck and keep us posted!

It depends on where u are living, whether or not u should worry. I wouldn't take him to the er unless I really really had too, the er carries more diseases then u think. I had to take a class in college, we had to set up a little plate with a substance on it to make bacteria stick to the plate so that we could look at it under the microscope and determine what bacteria it was in that area. My group partner worked in the er so we decided to let her put it in one of the er rooms , just to see if we get anything because they are suppose to be really clean. Well lets just say ours had more on it then anyones, Sorry I don't mean to scare you , but there was some really contagious stuff on there like staff and strep, and a few more things that u don't want to catch at the er. I won't take my kids unless it is an emergency, but thats me. Good Luck, i hope your boy gets feeling better.

I agree with calling the doctor. The health officials are recommending not leaving the house to go to the doctor or ER unless your child is VERY sick, such as having trouble breathing. Nobody has died of the swine flu in the US...here it's been very mild so far. All the deaths have been in Mexico. So, they don't want people rushing to the ER and infecting lots of people there. However, you have to go with your instincts. Good luck. Chances are, it's something random going around.

Unless there have been outbreaks in your specific community I wouldn't be too concerned with swine flu. I would still call the nurse line for my pediatrician. They are usually up to date on what viruses etc are going on in your community and can direct you from there. The labored breathing would be my main concern and the temp. depending on how high it is. Good luck. Always trust your instincts not your fears.

Hi S.,
I hope your son is feeling better. I saw the news today too,but they said there is only 20 confirmed cases of it and Oklahoma was not a state that was mentioned. Me and my son were sick with those very symptons a week ago, the doctor told me it was a virus going around. Hope he feels better soon, it's always worse for you when it's your child that is sick. God bless.

The news reports say that if you have flu-like symptoms, you should see a doctor to get tested for swine flu.

I hope that's not what it is. Best wishes and hugs.

what the Doctor's are saying that if you or your kid's are having a fever of more then 101.00 then yes do take them to the emergency room if he is breathing heavily i would take him NOW it could be a sign if his body being under stress and therefor his heart need's to work harder to support his body.
When you get to the emergency room let them know he has had a fever and his breath hard i would say do not worry because the fever has gone down but the fact that his breath hard does not sound good. So just let me know what happen email me at ____@____.com

Your pediatrician should have someone on-call after hours for questions. Call their regular office number and see if the recording says anything. If you can get a hold of someone now, they can tell you whether you need to take him to the ER, or something else to try.

Our daughter had a high fever late one night & we almost took her to the ER. Thankfully we remembered we could call the pediatrician's office & talk to a doctor. Turns out the fever wasn't too high, so we would have wasted a trip to the ER!

Good luck, I hope he feels better soon!

If you have not traveled or been around someone who has traveled, it is probably not Swine flue, for now it is pretty contained and one in a few states. If you are in TX or one of the other states that has seen a case, getting to the Dr. early it the trick. You should probably take him in anyway if he is feeling that bad. If my kids were complaining of feeling that bad and running fever, they'd be at the Dr. I wouldn't take to ER unless emergency, or when regular Dr is not in.

I would make sure that I would obtain some type of medical advice immediately. Here in Baton Rouge I know one hospital that has a nurse on call 24/7 to call for advice.
Be careful taking a patient to the emergency room particularly when their immune system is low. A hospital is one of the worse places where one can pick p all kind of illnesses.
However if you feel that the child is progressing in the wrong direction and are unable to obtain good medical advice do not hesitate to go to the emergency room, however try to isolate yourself from others as much as possible. This is not for you but for all others as well.

God Bless

Well, on the news they are telling us that doctors are able with a simple swab test, to determine which flu a patient is dealing with, or even if they have the flu. So I would not panic and rush to the ER, exposing him (and yourself) to who knows what!! But call your doctor and ask if you can bring him by for the swab test to determine if he is suffering from flu or just a common virus of some sort. This is what they are asking people to do if they have any symptoms. This will reassure you and protect you both from needless exposure to ER bugs.

Hope he's already feeling better when you read this!! It's most likely NOT the swine flu.. but testing will reassure you.

Take care!
