HOLA!

With all the requests sent out today regarding potty training, it got me thinking, what's the average age children get potty trained? I have heard boys are later than girls, but I don't really know. We have a 17 month old, and I don't think I will begin training her until the Spring/Summer, but I was just wondering: WHEN DID YOU BEGIN POTTY TRAINING YOUR CHILDREN?

I started potty training my oldest girl at 18 mo. , but that was just introducing the potty to her and asking her if she wanted to go try! at 21 mo. I really got intensive and took or asked her if she had to go every 20 min. and if she told me no 2 times in a row I would take her any how and if she went she got 2 M&M's and if she tried I gave her a sticker and she was potty trained by her second birthday!

Well we tried around 2 1/2 but she still said she was a baby and needed diapers and was more interested in the toliet paper than trying to go. Well I decieded to hold off and we tried again about 4 months ago. She did really well and hasnt peeded in pants at all. We gave her a no more diapers gift (a scotter she wanted) and let her go pick out some panties. She was very excited. We also took her extra diapers to a firend for her little girl so now she knows they are not in the house.

With daughter number 1 we started when she was curious at 18 mo. It was going well until my MIL came to visit and messed it all up. We didn't start again until she was about 2 1/2 but things kept happening that she would not want to do it.(we moved and she got a new baby sister)Finally when she was almost 3 she went and she is now 4(5 in Oct) we still have to reminder to go cause she doesnt want to stop playing.
With daughter # 2 we would start off just doing it in the morning and right before bedtime and bath time. She would fight me so dad had to help her. We went on vacation and while on vaction she would rather use the big potty. When we got back from vac. she was trained. We didn't force or push her. She has had one accident since she started and did not like it so she goes with out me telling her too. So much different than the other one.
I don't know how we going to train daughter # 3 yet cause she is still 17 mo but each child is different. We will go with her que. on this. Hopefully she will learn from watching her big sisters. We will see next year.
Good luck!

From what I've read, children aren't able to control those muscles until they are at least 18 mths old, it is involuntary to them. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends waiting until your child is 2 years old to introduce potty training. I started potty training my son when he was almost 2. It has been kind of a slow process though because I had a baby during that time, I started watching kids out of my home, and he also had to start wearing glasses and then an eye patch over his stronger eye to strengthen the other eye! All this while potty training. Check out babycenter.com and read all the articles and message boards about potty training. There is a lot of useful information on there including ready signs. (like are they expressing independence, can they pull their pants down on their own, do they have words for potty, do they feel uncomfortable in a dirty diaper and want to be changed, etc) Some children may not even be ready to start trying till they're 3 or later. Slowly introduce it by letting your child help pick out a potty chair, let her sit on it with her clothes on, play pretend with a doll going potty. Get a potty video like Once Upon a Potty (it has a cute catchy song on it). There's no perfect science to it, it should be as natural as possible. Spring/Summer is a good time of the year to start, you can have her run around in just pull ups so it'll be easy to get them off before potty time! Good Luck with everything!
