My child is getting a rash from the sunscreen we use. Banana Boat. Any suggestions on a more "natural or hypoallergenic" one?
I use the Shaklee one and love it. I water ski a lot and it is the only one that doesn't get into my eyes because it is absorbed right away. But if your child is a baby, I would go for one made for babies.
My dd had this problem too and someone on mamapedia tipped me off that it isn't the BRAND of sunscreen it's the ingredients.
Aveobenzone is the trigger for my DD, it's in the spray kind,
She has to use the Titanium Dioxide sunscreens, the thick white paste kind.
Banana boat, Neutragena, Coppertone etc ALL have several different kinds of sunscreens some with aveobenzone and some with titanium dioxide. So don't look for a brand look for the active ingredient.
Get the Thick Creamy kind that acts as a blocker instead of the chemical kind that you rub in and they absorb.

Yes, we have this problem with my son and niece as well. We've narrowed it down to the ingredient that allows the sunscreen to be absorbed into the skin. For us, pure zinc (clear if you can find it!) applied 20 minutes before you go in the sun works really well. For some reason pure zinc is kind of hard to find, especially in a big tube. Also, it is key to put it on BEFORE you go in the sun like the directions on most sunscreen states. Good luck, this can be really frustrating.
for my daughter, avobenzene (the darling child ingredient right now) is the culprit.
you have to read each and every label. banana boat has 2 kids ones (I think, might be baby) - the 45 is okay and the 50 isn't or vice versa.
we've moved to zinc or titanium only for active ingredients. harder to rub in but no rashes.
My children had this happen when I used expired sunscreen without realizing it. They have sensitive skin but have been fine as long as the sunscreen I buy is relatively new. If it happens again though I'll have to look into the ingredients as some others have mentioned. Good luck!
