Try to keep him/her in the shade as much as possible. If you're going to be somewhere like a beach or water, get a rash guard with a SPF. That way they don't get too hot either.
Hi Moms,
I know I can't put regular sunscreen on my 4 month old, but what about the herbal kind? If not, any suggestions for sun protection besides a sun hat and long sleeves?
Thanks!

I really like California Baby sunscreen. Also Badger makes a non-toxic no chemical sunscreen that I like even more - it is not as thick and it smells good. Environmental Working Group also rated Badger sunscreen as the #1 safest.
Check out the site below - it is a none bias report on sunscreens and how safe and effective they are for children.

I've used Aveeno baby sunscreen on all 3 of my kids since just 3 or 4 months old. But I never but it on their faces when they were babies. Just the skin that was unable to remain covered by the hats/shade/etc.
I wouldn't use coconut oil as many people use that to get a nice brown tan. Raw Shea butter actually has a SPF of about 5 naturally. I've found that I don't get burned when I use it. And you don't have to worry about chemicals. You can look it up online.
Hey M.,
I use Neutrogena Pure and Free Baby. It is non-greasy, non-scented, no color, hypoallergenic, and recommended by pediatricians. My daughter gets eczema and this is the only sunsreen that is sensitive enough fro her skin (she is really fair like me). I love it. Here is the Walgreens link...they also carry it at WalMart, CVS, and Target.

I 'third' the California Baby.
My company sells over 350 natural based products and has a great sun care line. Please give me a call for more information. T. ###-###-####
I didn't put sunscreen on either of mine until they were 6 months. Before that I used hats, longs sleeves, or just tried to keep them in the shade. if I knew that I wasn't going to be in the sun longer than 15 or 20 minutes, thenI wouldn't bother. Kids absorb lots of Vitamin D from the sun and sunscreen can block that absorbtion.
As for the herbal sunscreen...I would ask your pediatrician to be on the safe side.
California Baby makes an incredible baby sunscreen. It's especially good for children with sensitive skin.
aveeno is one that doctor reccomends.
Coconut oil has natural spf properties. I took my fair redhead to Hawaii and only used a hat and coconut oil. She went out in a swim diaper only. We did just fine. Of course, I was reasonable with her sun exposure otherwise, but we certainly didn't stay inside and wear long sleeves while out!
I am a certified herbal consultant and I would recommend the samambaia fern from the Amazon rainforest. I know of two topical products that are all natural (truly) that contain this amazing herb. Feel free to check out my website at: www.shootingstarherbs.amazonherb.net for Recovazon Gel or Lluvia Replenishing Moisturizer or to contact me for more detailed information.
My son has very sensitive skin and I put Aveno sunscreen on him. It's kind of pricey but worth it. A little goes a long ways and you do not have to re-apply it every time you turn around.
