Hi everyone,

My 6 year old is already acting bored this summer!!! Kindergarten just ended 3 weeks ago and we have done a couple of playdates and he was in a camp that was one hour for four days, but over the weekend you would have thought we owned no toys. My son has never acted like this before, so I wonder if I should be doing something different now that he is a little older. I played with my kids a lot when they were younger but now that they are 6 and 4, I am trying to leave them to play on their own more and so far it is not going as well as I would like!! Any ideas?

Thanks,

N.

start you day with some education but fun stuff to do. Go to barnes and noble or borders and get them book that have to do with what they will be learning in school copy the pages and make up little packs for them to work on daily so there brains don't slack education all summer. that will take up your morning than after lunch plan on different things go to the zoo one day have a play date here and there. Have craft day on raining days be creative think up of different things take them to t he movies, go for a bike ride, walks, etc.

Some of the boredom is due to TV, computer and video games. My 4 children were rarely bored, but they used their imagination a lot in their play. I did take them to various summer bible schools to break up their days. They always enjoyed their summers, and I did not spend a lot of money for we were on a limited budget. Stand firm. They should be able to amuse themselves for the most part.

There are so many things to do. Try to plan a few activities each week:

library day; zoo; splash park (metro beach); local park/playground (take a picnic lunch); fill up a small pool and let them squirt stuff...float boats...wash their bikes...; water balloons; go for a hike; sandbox (if you don't have...great investment).

I agree with Katrina. Get yourself memberships to the Zoo, Henry Ford, Detroit Science Center and the metroparks. After you initial outlay of $$ you are free and clear for the year and you have a wide selection of activities to choose from depending on your mood, the weather and your location. Once you have the membership, you won't feel like you have to go anywhere for the whole day - you can go to the zoo for an hour (my daughter sometimes only plays in the playarea) and then come home and let teh kids play together. It should break up the monotony for all of you.

Good luck and have fun.

Try taking your kids to different places. The Museum of Natural History in Ann Arbor as a floor dedicated to dinosaurs ... take them to the Hands on Museum and to Gallup Park; you could have a picnic there. You could take them to the Detroit Zoo (or Toledo if its closer) and to the Henry Ford Museum and Green Field Village. Good luck!

I am not sure if there is a participating alley in your area, but if your kids like bowling check out kidsbowlfree.com. You sign up and the kids get 2 free games a day all summer, you just pay for shoes. We do that, we signed up for the summer program at the library, we joined the Toledo Zoo, we go to the parks of course, got a pool for the backyard, and do arts and crafts. Yes my daughters (5 1/2, 4) still get bored too. Oh and they have gymnastics on Thursday moenings. Hopefully that helps some.

We have been very busy! Going to the park, zoo, hands on museum, Spray park (Plymouth), playing with friends/cousins, Library. My goal this summer is to have a planned activity at least 2 days a week.
We are usually gone in the morning and rest for about an hour in the afternoon. During rest they can read books or listen to a quiet CD.
I have 3 girls, 5 1/2, 3 1/2, and 1 1/2.
