My husband and I are going to take a trip by ourselves this coming summer. Probably around the end of September. This will be our first time away from our almost 3 year old son. But, we desperately need some time alone. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go? We would like to stay in the United States. No overseas travel and no cruises. At least not for our first trip alone.

What can I do next?

San Fransisco and Napa - enjoy the wine and the coat.

New York City - see a show and go shopping.

Savannah and Charleston are nice but hot.

The Outer Banks of NC.

Asheville, NC and the Biltmore.

Don't forget to giv emedical power of attorney to your child's caregivers while you are away.

We spent five days in Newport, RI a couple of years ago and it was beautiful! It is the type of place where you can do as much or as little as you like and still feel like you have experienced the culture.

If you go...
- stay in a bed-and-breakfast
- do the ghost tour
- have lunch at Castle Point (pricey, but completely worth it!)
- eat dinner at the Black Pearl (it's an institution there)
- eat a meal at the West Deck
- tour the mansions
- check out Flo's Clam Shack
- do the entire "walk" down the coast line and take the time to see the mansions
- check out the church where JFK was married
- enjoy the shopping and lifestyle of the "rich and famous" for a few days

That is a wonderful time of year to go to Northern California. Take a look at some of the bed & breakfast's and inns in Sonoma, or if you like things a little more rustic, go further up north to Mendocino. If you like something closer, Mackinac Island usually has specials that time of year. Mission Point on Mackinac Island is a nice, moderate resort.
