Stool Testing for Parasites

Hi Moms,

I have a gluten sensitivity, and I asked my doctor if I could be tested for parasites (I have many symptoms of parasites, and sometimes, parasites and gluten sensitivity/Celiac are connected. I just want to rule it out, but he refused. He told me I don’t have symptoms of parasites, even though I do, and I told him, which are: gas/bloating, joint/muscle pain, allergies (i.e., gluten sensitivity), anxiety, chronic fatigue, immune dysfunction (parasites can cause a positive ANA blood test result, which means there is a possible autoimmune disease). Also, a gluten sensitivity/Celiac can also result in a positive ANA result. My doctor said if I had parasites, my symptoms would be big. When I told him a gluten sensitivity is big (I eat gluten free), he dismissed it. I just want to be stool tested for parasites so I can rule them out! Has anyone had a stool test for parasites before? If so, what kind of a doctor did this? I am going to switch doctors, but want to make sure I switch to the right kind of one. Should it be a D.O? Someone else? Thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Just to clarify, (because one mom was confused) - I only started eating a gluten free diet AFTER I found out I had a gluten sensitivity. When I was tested (via blood and via stool), I was still eating a gluten diet.

I have had a stool test for parasites. I had to INSIST that my doctor order the test. She refused and then relented when I reminded her that she worked for ME and if she wouldn't do it, I would find another practitioner who was willing to spend my money for tests I wanted.
Guess what? I had parasites. I was so sick that I thought I would die, and I ended up on meds for a year that didn't do me any good. I ended up going to a naturopath that put me on a plan that cured me in 2 months.

You may or may not have parasites, but shouldn't your doctor allow you to pay for a test that you request?

My primary care ordered this test when I was being evaluated for IBS to rule out the possibility of parasites.

You said your blood test for celiacs was negative and on this post you say you eat a gluten free diet so I just wanted to mention when you are tested for celiacs you must eat gluten in order for your test results to be accurate.
Edited: ok :) just wanted to make sure you knew that.

I would ask friends/family if they have a doctor they like and trust. Both my regular doc and my ob (and also my kids ped) will run any tests needed to help put my mind at ease so I'm glad to hear you're switching.

My daughter had a parasite stool test when she was itty bitty (she was pooping REALLY weird colors, plus some other symptoms, which turned out to be an allergy, so I'm really surprised that doc is so against the test). You're going to get a second opinion, and you're doing the right thing for peace of mind, if nothing else. I would also get another allergy test and see what else, if dietary, may be causing the issues if the stool sample is negative for parasites. Any GP can run this test. Feel better!

Isn't that crazy that the Dr's won't listen to us!! It's our body after all. I found a natural path chiropractor in my area that orders it for quite a few of his patients. Only problem is, it's expensive test (About $500) and most insurance co's will pay little or nothing towards it. So it's out of pocket big bill up front.
