Stomach Flu and Pregnant?

Hello - I am currently about 5 weeks pregnant and over the last few days I have had a sinus cold and the stomach flu. Everyone in my house had been throwing up/diarrhea and just when I thought I was in the clear it hit me Christmas morning (nice). During this time my temperature rose about 1 degree higher than normal (it was 100.3 on an ear therm that I usu measure about 99 on) and was that way on and off for 2 days. I am worried that this may have adversly affected the development process. Does anyone know if a low grade fever can do the damage that a higher one can? Also what about the intense vomiting I had? Thanks in advance :)

What can I do next?

I think so long as you stay hydrated, you'll be fine. It's no fun having the flu, and even less fun when you're pregnant. Are you feeling any better now? If the vomiting and/or diarrhea last more than 24 hours, you should probably call your OB doctor. They might be able to prescribe you flumadine or something to help you feel better and/or you might need some IV fluids. The baby is going to take everything it can from you body, so you might feel really wiped out. Don't overdo it and rest on your left side as much as possible. Drink, eat Popsicles, and/or try broth for some energy. When you're feeling like you can keep something down, try saltine crackers, sprite (no caffeine) and/or a grilled cheese sandwich.

I would recommend taking Probiotics. This is healthy bacteria for your gut and provides a layer of protection when confronted by unhealthy material. It is all natural and perfectly safe to take while pregnant. When you do get have stomach issues increase the dosage for a few days. Studies have shown mothers with allergies/asthma who took probiotics while pregnant, their children had a decrease chance of allergies and asthma.

You're fine. None of your symptoms can harm your baby unless you get dehydrated. If you start to feel like you want to cry but no tears will come & you have no energy & your skin seems thin & your veins seem flat, you're dehydrated & you need to see a Dr. that can put you on IV fluids. I'm 9 months pregnant with my 3rd baby & everyone in my house has that flu right now, too. I'm praying I don't get it & washing my hands like crazy & spraying everything in sight with Lysol!

Your baby is probably just fine. go to the doctor just to be sure that it is the flu you have and not roto virus. You do not want to get dehydrated. Sometimes people with Roto virus have to be hospitalized so check it out and do not worry about your baby having any problems. Drink tons of fluids and get to that doctor. Good luck!

Hi Jamie...
I dont think it will affect the baby due to its not a high fever. Call your OB and ask them also. They will reassure you. Then you will feel much better....

fIRST & Foremost, stop stressing out - that will do more damage to the baby than anything else; now for you - Call your doctor if you symptoms don't clear up in 3 days, he will want to know, but until than soda crackers, gingerale and sip it at first to be sure you are going to hold it down & if you feel dyhdrated have your hubby get "Smart" water, as it is an elctrolyte replacement water and has no sugar or anything else it, because you are losing elctrolytes when you get sick & throw up. It was on sale at Ralphs for .99 bottle. My husband & I really like it and you need to hydrate, hydrate & hydrate until you can take some solid food like soup to begin with. I doubt that you did any damage - you didn' have this low grade temp for very long did you? Remember also to run everything by your OB, you not bothering them when you sick or whenyou ask questions, that is what the nurses are there for - Good luck & I will keep you & your family in my Prayers.

I work in childcare where I am exposed to everything! I"m in my seventh month and have had two stomach viruses during my pregnancy. The first lasted four days. The low grade fever shouldn't have done any damage... my OB wasn't concerned. The vomiting hasn't affected my little bundle of elbows and knees either. My weight gain was a little slow but so far everything has been normal. I don't know if this will ease your mind but I've also been on antibiotics twice for ear infections and steroids once for hives.

Hope this helps you relax.
