Still Lactating 16 Months After Weaning?

Hi Ladies,
My son never got the hang of nursing and I pumped for 9 months. He is now 25 months old and I'm still making milk. I'm just wondering if this is normal or not? I was under the impression I would dry up completely. I never dried up after my first son but he self weaned and I got pregnant a couple weeks later.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Dear A.,
Yes, it is normal. Just relax, stress can prolong the milk. Also stimulation of any kind can keep milk coming in. HANG IN THERE!

A.,

I did the same thing. I never breastfed my daughter and still kept producing milk....for years. I had very high prolactin levels. This meaning that my body thought I was still pregnant. I kept getting my period, but could not get pregnant no matter how hard we tried. I was embarassed until I found a lump in my breast (it was benign). This caused me to discuss with my GYN the fact that I was still lactating and my daughter was about 8 or 9. He discovered the high prolactin level through a blood test and I'm now on medication for it. Talk to your GYN. He/She might have a simple explaination or way to stop it. Good luck!

Hi A.,

It may be just normal for you. But if you want it to stop -from my exp. cabbage leaves on the boobs will reduce milk supply.

Or you could check in with la leche league. www.llli.org or your ob/gyn.

God bless,

G.

I am the mother of 5 beautiful girls, all breastfed. All were nursed from 1 to 2 years. I had breastmilk for 5 years after each child. Doctor told me it was normal, some women lactate longer than others. I know it can be a pain, but I was always happy to have plenty of milk. Good luck!

Ask your doctor for the pill that drys up your milk if you wish it to stop.

Consider yourself blessed is all.

Good luck hun.

i know this might sound weird but it works. When i wanted to stop lactating my dr. told me to put cabage leaves on my breast. What you need to do is cut slits in the very middle of the leave so that it will absorb your milk. Then tighten you breast with those medical brown bands that go on your leg when you sprain it and it really works. It hurts a lot but it works.

Interesting! Never heard of such a thing. I have four kids - nursed two of them. Whether I nursed or not, my milk dried up within 4-6 days of not nursing. You would have been a hot commodity as a wet nurse in the "olden days"! :0) Ask your doctor.

Hi A.,
Totally normal!! I don't think i will ever dry up. Lots of moms i know, including myself still have milk even after years without nursing. I am not sure why exactly, but normal none the less. I had a baby in June 2007, pumped for 6 weeks, and still lots of milk now.FYI,i was a surrogate, this is why i only pumped for 6 weeks. I guess our bodies just go in momma mode and thinks for itself.

I would go and see a doctor. You should be drying up but maybe consider being a wet nurse.

I'm wondering if maybe we never really totally dry up. I had 2 friends who each adopted babies after their last natural child was several years old. They just put the adopted baby to their breast several times a day, and eventually their milk came in.
Hope you're not having so much milk as to be a real problem. I heard that hospitals need mother's milk for preemies?

A.,
I lactated forever - my doctor said everyone is different, blah, blah. I think my youngest was about 7 before I FINALLY stopped leaking from time to time. It simply faded away. Sorry I don't have better news for you. By the way, I opted NOT to take the med they offer to stop it.
