Staying Sick Constantly - 9 Weeks Pregnant

Hello all. I am 37 and 9 weeks pregnant. The problem I'm having is that I am constantly staying sick to my stomach. Haven't been able to throw up. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what I could do to help alleviate some of this. I ordered some of those PSI Bands but they don't seem to help much. I've also been taking B6 and of course drinking sprite, ginger ale and eating saltine crackers. The doctor is supposed to call something in for me today which I really didn't want to have to do but this feeling sick all the time is getting to be too much. I remember getting sick some with my last two pregnancies but I don't remember it being this bad. So I was just wondering if anyone here had any ideas for me to try. I'm hoping that once I hit my second trimester, it'll get better. Thank you all in advance for your advice.

What can I do next?

I did have to take meds with my first pregnancy because of the severity of my morning sickness (I was diagnosed with HG at 7 weeks) but what helped with it a little the first time and a lot with my second pregnancy was lemonade or just lemon juice. I found I could keep the nausea at bay enough to finish my meal if I sipped lemonade or water with lemon after each bite.
Hope that helps!

Try chewing mint gum. It helped me out a lot. I was the same way you were your first trimester. I ate what ever I craved and didn't try to eat "healthy" until after I felt better. I ate a lot of chik-fil-a nuggets. They always made me feel better. I also took ginger tabs and drank Caffine Free Pepsi and that helped. I thought I would never be able to leave the couch, but at about 11 weeks it went away completely, so hopefully you will have the same luck.

I was the same with this pregnancy, and nothing worked for me. You won't be able to get meds from your doctor unless you're constantly throwing up causing you to lose too much weight. That's the only reason to get a perscription. It's tough, but just stick it out. Mine lasted until 15 weeks, which was so hard for me with a 3 year old running around, but I made it.

I was a sick with my first (but nothing like this time), and here are things that worked with me then but didn't this time around:

ginger ale
ginger snaps
lemons (just straight lemons. . that actually helped this time a little)
lemons in my water
extra cold water to drink

There's also some natural stuff at Sprouts that is supposed to help. I never tried it because I didn't find it until I wasn't sick anymore. Good luck, and I hope you feel better soon.

When I first found out I was pregnant, I knew I didn't want to be sick so I prepared myself and it worked for me and I hope it works for you.

I always kept water and saltine crackers by my bed. Every time I got up to go to the bathroom, I would eat a cracker and drink some water. In the morning before I got out of bed, I ate a few crackers laying down and drank some water. Most of the time the sickness comes because you have an empty stomach. After eating the crackers, wait about 20 mins before getting out of bed. Throughout the day, I kept sweet tarts in my purse and ate a few anytime I felt just a little quesy. The tartness really helped. There is something to be said about those prego pops that the maternity stores sell. They are tart and are to help with nausea.

Good luck with your pregnancy!

You might try salty foods. In the first trimester I always gain more weight than in the rest of the pregnancy because I eat about every hour or so and eat what ever will not taste to bad coming back uplike pop tarts=0) and usually salty foods as well seem to calm the stomach. I eat those stupid ramen cup of noodles like they are free... tehy are so bad for you but they do well on my tummy! Then I switch gears to seriuosly healthy as soon as the sickness passes.A vanilla milkshake ...or five never killed anyone! heehee

In 5 pregnancies I have had some baaad morning/all day/are you kidding me...sickness:o) Just try to find your groove and if you arent actually throwing up I would weight on the meds.

Hang in there mama this will pass!

I'm right with you on not wanting to take any more drugs than absolutely necessary, esp when pregnant. And I feel your pain on this one--I lost track of the number of times my DH got home from work to find me passed out on the couch with a bucket next to me--and yes, I have a full time job, but luckily my boss was understanding about my leaving early ALL THE TIME my first trimester! It's no fun at all!

I have two recommendations for you. 1) a book called "The Morning Sickness Companion" It has all kinds of information about what causes morning sickness (and, of course, points out that this is a HUGE misnomer, since many of us have "all the time sickness"!) and also different things that might help. I think different things help for different people. 2) You should also try to find a good health food store near you, and ask for their recommendations for an herbal tea to help. You will need to make sure you talk to someone who knows what they're doing, and read the label carefully, since some teas are great for your when pregnant, and some not. I went to Mike's Health Food shop on the NE corner of White and 75 in McKinney--but that's a long way away for you. Ask around and see if you can't find a recommendation for somewhere local. And good luck! I know it's awful, but it will pass, and of course the baby is worth it in the end!

I had the same problem as you. Keep a box of gingersnap cookies by your bed and when you wake up in the morning... make sure you eat a couple before you do anything. Do not drink anything on an empty stomach. Mints and gum also helped me. Carbs really is the main key to not getting sick. Bagels, toast anything that would soak up the extra acid in your stomach.

I'd hold off on the prescription for just a little longer if you can because there are a few other things you can try.
Something that worked great for me was to have at my bedside some high-protein food (i.e. 5 or 6 almonds, some peanut butter, etc.); I'd eat the snack *before* getting up. If I didn't do this, I would feel nauseous for hours - but not throw up.
And FWIW, the closest I ever got to throwing up was in the car. I had my husband pull over to the nearest fast-food place & I ate some Wendy's chicken nuggets - problem solved in less than 2 minutes.
Protein worked like medicine for me, maybe it can work for you too?

Something that also made a *HUGE* difference was the amount of rest I got. If I was tired & took a nap, the "morning" sickness seemed to stay away. If I kept going w/o resting, or if I missed my "naptime," I'd start to get quesy. I don't know if it's possible for you to grab some quick shut-eye during the day, but if you can, try & see if it doesn't help your sick-feeling in addition to helping you feel better rested.

HTH!

I was the same way with both my pregnancies and it lasted for several weeks then slowly tapered off over the next few months. I never threw up. I was just constantly sick to my stomach. I ate saltines, drank ginger ale, used that otc liquid anti nausea medicine that is safe for pregnant moms and prayed that it would end soon. My heart goes out to you. I know how terrible you feel. I secretly wish all men could experience morning sickness for just one day out of their lives!!! Good luck and congratulations!!

what helped me with all three of mine was zofran 8mg taken every 8 hours. zofran is a preventative nausea med, so it's gonna "treat" your nausea per se, but if you take it every 8 hours, it should help to prevent the nausea, so obviously you'd need to give it a little time to kick in. it can constipate you to the point that you'll want to shoot yourself when taken that frequently, so i took colace with it(3 a day). throughout my first trimester, i typically had to take a half dose of phenergan(normal is 25mg, so i took 12.5mg) once or twice a day. a full dose knocks me loopy for days, but i found that a half dose would get me through the day without TOO much sickness. now, all that said, i suffered from SEVERE hyperemesis gravidarum with my first two kids - dropped down in the 90lbs range at about 16 weeks with my first, had to be fed through a PICC line that then got infected with MRSE. so, i am an extreme case, but that is what worked for me. my OB and perinatologist felt that those meds were certainly safe for me and baby, and my husband did as well(he is a pharmacist). good luck and i hope you're feeling better soon! oh, one more, reglan thrown in the mix seemed to help as well - it kind of "pushes things through" your stomach fast so you don't feel the food just setting there all heavy and making you feel ill. hope that helps.
