Mamas & Papas -

DS is 2. He's had a string of winter colds with the usual symptoms, runny nose, coughing, etc. Recently though, and only sporadically, he seems to be spitting up. Has a cup of milk, gets in the car, runs around, then with a bit of pressure on his belly (from bending over to take off his shoes, from squatting, from a sirm hug), spit up. No more than a table spoon or so, and its spit up, not vomit.

Any thoughts on what to do?

He may have a ton of mucus still hanging aroudn fro the colds etc. Often kids (and adults) have mucus that doesn't "show up" as a stuffy or runny nose but is still in the nasal passages, back of the throat, etc. That could be part of the problem. The mucus may mean that when he then runs and bends, what's coming up isn't the milk or food really but more mucus.

The running around followed immediately by a sudden movement like bendig over or squatting sounds like an issue too. He might be the kind who just should not drink or eat when hes' going to move around immediately afterward.

Third thing to consider-- acid reflux or maybe allergies. Is it always and only milk that this happens with? If so -- try taking him off it for a while and see what happens. He may have issues digesting it.

Okay...and I'm smiling kindly while I type this...the next time you have been sick, drink a cup of milk, take a quick spin in the backseat of the car, get out and run around, and then have someone apply pressure to your belly. You may not "spit up" exactly...but you might. We think of it as reflux...sometimes, when you silently burp, you get a bit of fluid that comes back up!

I imagine it's a combination of those things, combined with the fact that he is only two and his digestive and nervous systems are still developing. I really don't think it's something to be concerned about.

However, if he's complaining of chest pain, throat pain, etc...it may be reflux and you may need to have it evaluated.

Reflux. The first time I remember doing this I was 6. Talk to your doctor.

I have been on medication since I was 28 but only because nobody ever thought of doing it before. Still meds aren't great. There are no good solutions. Surgery is successful at tightening the sphincter only about 1/2 the time.
