Hey mamas!!

Quick question about talking in my 23 month child. Lately I've been hearing some changes to his pronunciation of words. Some words he's saying much better like he went from saying "wowel" for towel to actually saying it right!! Some words he was saying pretty accurately, like "pepper" now he's saying "peppeee". I also notice that he's calling me "mommy" a lot more and not "mama" like he has been; same goes for "dada" now it's daddy. We haven't actively been trying to get him to call us that, he's just done it on his own it seems. Is this typical?

What can I do next?

Sounds normal to me. When my kids say something wrong, I'll say the word properly but don't necessarily request that they say it back correctly unless it was an issue where there was frustration stemming from the miscommunication.

For example, my son was trying to mimic the nav system and he would say turn left, turn right and something that sounded like turn straight. But he got frustrated and upset when I would say "turn straight" after he did. After a bit, I figured out he was saying "continue straight" but he was only saying the end of it. So I tried to teach him how to say it by breaking down the word.

But if my son said he wanted the peppee instead of pepper, I would just say back, "Do you want the pepper?" or "Oh you want the pepper." and not worry if he said the word again. If you keep saying the words correctly (repetition), he will get it.

In terms of mama vs mommy, my son did the reverse. We were always mommy and daddy and one day he started calling my mama. I just went with it. Sometimes I'm mommy and sometimes I'm mama. I know a dad whose kid calls him by his first name a lot.....because that's what his mom calls his dad.

When he says the word improperly, simply say the word correctly and then ask him to say it back to you. It's nothing to worry about, and very normal.

Sounds like a normal 2 year old to me.

I wouldn't know if it is typical but I can tell you my now 27 year old son didn't say almost anything I could understand until he was almost 3 years old and he now works in public speaking.
